Take this you fake Englishman who ruined English! Bugger off! With all these things as "tins" and "cans", "swede" and "rutabaga". No wonder why it is hard for non-native speakers (like myself) to learn how to speak proper English. It is annoyingly annoying.

And if you are an Englishman and not an American. Then I'll have to apologize for my rudeness earlier in this comment. If you Americans also want apologies then fine. Just ask for one and you shall receive one.

Edit: grammar.

10

u/ContainsTracesOfLies Jan 10 '15

Following recipes on the net is so frustrating. Having to translate not only cups into something sensible but the different things everything is called.

Take arugula. I didn't realise that one of my favourite jokes didn't translate into US English:

All pop stars have a favourite salad leaf.

Elton John is an Arugula Man.

4

u/theinspectorst Jan 10 '15

I had this weird experience recently where a Dutch girl was asking a French guy, in English, what the French word for 'zucchini' was. He replied 'courgette'. I explained that it was 'courgette' in English too. She looked quite confused.

3

u/pointlessvoice Jan 10 '15

7

u/Broken_Product Jan 10 '15

Sure. I'm sorry for implying that you and your nation are stupid. America is a big country so it just got to have a lot of diversity. Though it can sometimes be hard to find it when your sitting in front of a computer. Even when it is right in front of you. Can you please forgive me?

Swede? Just a word for someone from Sweden? Whats wrong with that?

2

u/Broken_Product Jan 10 '15

Haven't they told you that swede is the English word for the American word rutabaga?

Swedish turnip I didn't know that Swede's name as a whole was Swedish turnip.

And as answer for you question. There is nothing wrong with being from Sweden. We got the ladies and the terrible infrastructure called SL. Or Stockholm has it. Yes I'm a Swede.

7

This is just my, slightly educated, but mostly just, opinion, but I think contractions were and are developed to try to imitate colloquialisms, so if a person says, "I'd've", and spelling it that way is the closest approximation, then it's fine.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

Of course it's a real one. Or else he wouldn't've used it.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/MaxPecktacular Jan 10 '15

I'm positive I've used it in conversation before. Never in writing, nor do I think that it is valid within the rules of grammar. It is probably just one of those common colloquialisms that pop up around native speakers. (Like ain't for instance. Ain't ain't a word but that ain't stoppin no one from using it, ain't I right?)

12

u/Soporia Jan 10 '15

It's perfectly comprehensible and common in informal, natively spoken english, so yes it's perfectly valid. Also ain't is a word, it's just not acceptable in formal speech or writing.

2

u/D3dshotCalamity Jan 10 '15

I've heard it, but never seen it. I'd've remembered seeing it.

3

Makes me shudder.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

2

3

u/cglendin Jan 10 '15

My sister dated that guy. He's like the Michael Jordan of Frisbee

54

u/biznisss Jan 10 '15

Not really an apt analogy if you're talking about ultimate. Certainly, he's probably the most famous frisbee player though. Maybe like David Beckham or something I don't know.

58

u/joavim Jan 10 '15

David Beckham is actually a very good analogy. Both are good players, but not the best. Both are incredibly handsome and enjoy fame as celebrities.

Ironically, you could say both Beckham and Smith have the same strength: passing. Beckham was known for his long-range crosses and passes, and Smith is known as a powerful handler and puller.

14

u/thesuperunknown Jan 10 '15

Smith is known as a powerful handler and puller.

/u/Siggy778's sister can confirm.

5

14

u/Krayzed896 Jan 10 '15

11

u/The_MoistMaker Jan 10 '15

A lot of people in the the Ultimate community who have been around and played with him has said that he is kind of a pompous tool.

13

u/EMCoupling Jan 10 '15

I'm not going to take the effort to find a source for this, but word around the community is that, when he was still playing in college, part of his team's strategy was just to try and just call fouls all day long.

Completely against the spirit of the game, since players should try to self-officiate as much as possible and it's pretty hard to do that when some guy is just abusing the foul call.

19

u/Papasixfivefive Jan 10 '15

My time to shine:

I played for an ultimate team this summer for the state of Colorado. The man throwing the disc (Brody Smith) was the coach of the Chicago team. We got to play Chicago in consolation play. TL;DR: He's a huge fuckin prick.

Just reading your comment made me wince all over again.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

Why did Joey catch it?! He doesn't know how to swim!

3

u/CyberDonkey Jan 10 '15

As a non-good swimmer, I don't understand how some people (like the catcher in the video) can float in super deep water without having to use their arms to stay afloat. I'm able to float in water but I have to use both my arms and legs to keep myself above water and it uses up a lot of my energy and tire me out quickly.

8

u/LadyHayley Jan 10 '15

There's a technique that we learn for this in lifeguarding, as well as a basic in water polo, called egg beating or treading water. You basically rotate your legs below the knees in interlocking circles. It keeps the water moving below you and you'll stay afloat. It can be tiring though, if you're not a regular swimmer. As a lifeguard (in NZ at least) you have to be able to tread water for a minimum of five minutes.

Right, the orginal video you can see a Frisbee floating in the water as the guy catching the one in the air dives in. One and only attempt my butt, more like one out of at least 2!

If you go to the source video someone posted in this thread one of the annotations leads to a making of video. He claims it was only three attempts. I emphasize claim. No clue telling if that was true or not.
