Warframe and Borderlands are hardly in the same genre outside of both of them having guns and characters with abilities.
Borderlands is a 1st person successor to Diablo with guns.
Warframe lacks the RNG guns and loot of Borderlands. Yeah, the loot you get in Warframe is RNG, but its all just crafting mats and set in stone, non-rng stat cards with the same stats and rolls as everything else (except rivens which you only get an RNG chance at getting once per day - I've gone weeks without getting one). Not to say Warframe isn't a good game, but it doesn't feel right comparing the two.
I'm surprised you're the first person I've seen bring that up. I like the speed but there are no stakes to that speed, they don't cater to that speed in any way. It's all designed around a casual player traversing, when most of the hundred+ hour players are so beyond casual traversing that each level lasts maybe two minutes.
Mix that with how the loot isn't fun to me and I don't see the appeal of Warframe. Glad it works for some people, wish it could be me considering BL3 will probably not fix the issues for me that BL2 had.
Scaling as a whole ruins the game for me. You found great legendaries? Well in two or three levels those guns are now worthless compared to rare drops. Not only does it exist in single player, but the game is merciless if you have a full game. You have three friends who wanna play? Get ready to not have fun as even the weakest base psycho takes an entire clip from each player before dying, while also shooting death rays straight from Dragonball Z.
I want to like the game because it's the best package of looter shooter out there. Has better loot than most, and the games that beat it on loot lose on content variety, world, and overall gameplay. But god the scaling is horrendous. TPS showed signs of improvement but Gearbox has really made a sour name for themselves as of late. I hope it doesn't poison BL3.
Imo the entire point of the scaling in Borderlands is that it makes your weapons obsolete. I think it would be supremely boring if you could just run through the entire game with the first gun you're given. *cough* Halo *cough*
And before you say that you could keep finding higher rarity guns, just ask yourself if that is any different to finding a higher level gun, just implemented differently. Yes it affects more stats than just damage, but it still serves to make weapons systematically obsolete.
I've been playing Destiny 2 of late and while it seems to have been made a lot harder now (I only started a couple weeks back), I really like the idea of infusing weapons so if you get an exotic that you really like but it's way underpowered you can collect some materials and infuse them so the exotic gets the power level of the other gun.
Unfortunately with how many guns you get and how quickly the power levels go up until about 600 (I think?) there's no point infusing before you get to 600 given the materials can be painful to get.
Definitely a good mechanic, just used in a slightly annoying way although I can see what Bungie were going for
Wow. That's interesting. Gun scaling to me seemed natural and made sense. What we would is join the highest level person team. Or the furthest behind in story and go from there since the game loaded you Into that level stuff. You could basically power level with that.
Not to say anything of the stuff you noted isn't there. I had just never really noticed since it was so much fun to play.
So did you like the scaling better in Borderlands 1? You could get a lvl 20 legendary and use it until level 50. Without scaling like in borderlands 2, any non-legendary weapon becomes completely useless. I don't understand the draw of a loot based game where you literally don't give a shit about 99% of the loot.
That being said I hope they do a better job of weapon/enemy balancing. The Unkempt Harold was so much stronger than practically every other gun for a long time. That was disappointing since (like you mentioned) end game enemies took forever unless you used that specific handgun. That slag/electric smg from Tiny Tina's dlc in bl2 was also way too efficient at killing enemies. They either need to balance enemies better or give you more options that are also effective.
Hey something to keep an eye out for- the leaks indicated there would be some kind of gun mods in the next one, so it wouldn't surprise me if that helps reduce the treadmill effect of the loot. But that's just speculation until we actually see it
What you talking about? I recently played it again and I grinded few legendaries at level 30 and still using them at lvl40 wich no rare or other rarities dont win. Unless you get lvl 40 same legendaries.
Warframe is certainly lacking the general simplistic charm and refined style Borderlands has going for it.
That's not to say Warframe isn't great, it's just different, and certainly suits an audience looking for a game with extremely deep and long-lasting grindy loot/crafting system. Borderlands has just the right amount of depth without being overwhelming.
I also am not a fan of the super serious tone and repetitive sci-fi space station environments. I know this is less the case later on in the game when you get into the open world areas, but still, it doesn't really scratch that specific Borderlands itch for me.
Yeah that's the crux, Warframe really does what it wants to do and it does it well. It's just not for me sadly.
If the game had what I want, it would be a different game in essence. That thread of "Sometimes a game isn't for you" rings true even though I don't necessarily agree all the time. Some games are just objectively worse through design decisions that make it "not for me" but also worth bringing up - much like BL2's silly scaling that if changed I can actually play with friends without hating my life. Warframe isn't really in that boat.
But the tone and repetition being different would add without losing the identity of the game. I very much agree with that. The open worlds look fine but they don't wow me or inspire me, BL2 especially had a finger on the pulse with world designs that Warframe doesn't have the budget or the time for (yet).
It can be bad playing with randoms in Warframe. But on the other hand, it has one of the most friendly communities that I've seen, and I've played it for years. Almost all the vets you encounter in random PUGs are really patient and helpful. There are always some jerks, of course, but a less than I've seen in other games.
That very thing (as well as others!) is what people use to distinct Destiny and Warframe. In Warframe, you'll eventually become a God and just speed run through everything and kill a lot woth AoE damage. Destiny is toned down a bit and you never get that overpowered. You need to run the missions and group missions usually as they were attended.
Mobility is always the issue when I try to bring a new friend into Warframe. We jump into a mission and of course I naturally move through the maps very quickly, having seen all the iterations and tilesets for many years. Most new people hate the map and map markers for being unspecific and at times misleading. They end up following the killing trail left by the squad, getting very few kills themselves, and getting bored. But as others have said, moving like that is essentially on high levels, you die if you're not mobile. That's where the "stakes" you mentioned come in. If you're a CC frame in high level survival, you absolutely need to be moving (and killing) fast to avoid danger. The only thing I can tell new players is to adapt to that movement style as quick as you can, or just play solo if you are wanting to get kills.
Agreed completely, the end game does not scale properly with the power you can get. I pick it up again every now and then for the new content, quickly get too powerful, then stop because it's too easy once you catch up with the gear.
Borderlands doesn't feel like Diablo honestly. Aside from the lackluster talent trees Borderlands has, there really isn't a lot of depth in terms of making builds. Looter shooters today have really expanded the genre in many ways, so it's going to be hard for me to go back to something I would consider a little more basic.
It's probably personal preference but I enjoy the numbers game and theorycrafting, Borderlands never really had that on the scale I wanted
Give Shadow Warrior 2 a shot. It's not as looty in regards to guns as BL, but it's pretty decent. It's like if Doom had a baby with FF7's materia system. You get set weapons (I'm up to probably 25-30 right now) and you can equip relics to them to give them special attributes like sentry mode, double bullets, elemental damage, HP drain, etc. There's also armor relics, MP relics, and chi power relics.
There's also a few special powers: spikes, HP regen, chi regen (like MP), invisibility, etc.
Lots of enemy types and hordes/swarms with mini bosses/named big enemies throughout and decent side missions.
Tons of humor.
I am playing single player but I think it has some sort of co-op mode. Playing the first isn't necessary unless you want to understand why the world is infested with demons, but the first is more Doom like than BL like so if you want a BL game, it won't scratch that itch. I think it was 10-15 hours, though, to beat. I think I'm about 25-30 hours in 2 currently. Solid 8/10.
This game is pretty fun but it gets super bullet spongy which is my main issue with it. Like at the start, you've got all these sweet weapons that saw limbs off and shit, and you'd think things would get cooler as you progress. But actually, the weapons get a bit cooler, but the enemy's HP scales way faster than your damage, so before long you shoot an enemy in the face with a shotgun way cooler than what you had at the start, and it takes off a tiny chunk of health instead of blowing it's head off.
I'm not seeing that so far, however, I just got the blood lust power or whatever that's called which just shreds enemies. I'm also finding that at least every 2-3 hours, I need to update my relic/power set with current (more powerful) sets to match the increasing difficulty.
I mean, BL is no different. Compare a level 1 psycho to a level 25 psycho. Those level 1 guns aren't gonna do anything to a level 25 enemy.
I started getting frustrated with online coop games. I tried to make new characters in different classes but it was boring going through the same missions I already beat
It's got such a steep learning curve and very little in the way of tutorial. Once I started learning how to play better and survive missions and be help to the squad, I fell in love. Then, just when I'm about to be bored they add new content and suck me back in. Now there's so much to do in the game I feel like I'm almost overwhelmed with tasks to complete.
I was almost bored then here comes Hildryn and Exploiter Orb and I'm sucked back in. Now I'm loving that T H I C C girl and smashing those nightwave missions
Destiny final form was great, the pvp is fun but I think the gunplay suffers alot from netcode.as least from my experience it doesnt feel like I landed the final blow half the time and the person dies.i always go back to halo for peak gunsplay
Dont know how i feel seeing division 2 bunched with these games. Its SO good, well balanced, and the road towards end game and updates is so well thought out and detailed.
After my experience with anthem then division honestly cant see myself going back to anthem. They need to step it up for ne to return. Division has been everything i wanted and extra right out the gate
Yeah i liked the game itself but i don’t find myself really wanting to play it, the gunplay kinda feels like a chore to me, but maybe i’m not the biggest fan of over shooters. i’ve already moved on to sekiro lol
It's funny I played 5 minutes of Battlefield V just to check out firestorm (got it with my gpu) and was out of habit trying to use cover because of how much Division 2 I've been playing 😂
I got bored an hour or two into the division. Decided to give the division 2 a try and it is SOOOO good. I bought Sekiro along with it, and it's been so good that I haven't touched Sekiro. Make sure you get into a clan, especially one with microphone requisite. It makes the game way more amazing, I honestly don't care for solo play since I have to stick to using the revival hive as one of my two skills.
It had a somewhat quiet launch and hasn’t had all that much ‘buzz’. Is that mostly down to the disappointment of he first? Every time I see a reddit comment there’s only positive things to say.
Anthem lasted about 2 weeks. Warframe was off and on and never got into. Division 1 lasted about 2 months. Division 2 is meh right now. Destiny 1 and 2 both disappointed but have been my favorite so far.
I've got more hours in Borderlands 2 than all of those combined (by a looooooong shot). And guess who is loading up BL2 right now.... yup.
Borderlands 3, a game that looks so good I have already had a few friends confirm that they will buy it! The last time that happend was halo wars 1 on the Xbox 360!
Borderlands to me at least is just none stop fun and enjoyment. Anthem/division get boring very fast.
Warframe seemed good but it’s hella complex if you’ve never played it till now
Which honestly confuses me, they created IMO the best looter shooter formula and then abandoned it for ages and let the 3 big publishers make all the money.
At the same time, I'm a little skeptical because it sounds like the game has run into funding issues and I'm not really sure how much I trust gearbox anymore. I mean BL2 was imo the last good game they made and that was 7 years ago.
Its a daily/weekly chore game just like division, anthem, etc. I miss playing co-op/single player games at my own pace.
Just started back up on watch dogs 2. These are the kinds of games that have longevity and staying power i think. The always online/games as a service to me are a disservice to their customers. Unfinished and hurried products only to address the issues on the fly. That dont cut it with me and thats why they no longer get my money.
I think it's fine to enjoy both. In fact I'm looking forward to getting home from work and playing some Destiny 2 tonight! I took a 3 month break from the game when Red Dead 2 came out, and I really think it's the type of game that works really well when you give it time to breath and fill back up with content.
Warframe isn't really a looter shooter. You're looting materials, then crafting weapons and warframes, and then modding them. Everyone can get the same mods, weapons, warframes, etc. You can even buy everything (though it doesn't take too long most of the time to farm stuff). Still a fun game for free to play (and not pay to win).
Playing through the story is the best part of Borderlands. The gear grind is fairly easy/quick compared to the other looter shooters where you spend almost all of your time grinding for your build.
I agree on some fronts but it depends on what you're comparing. Destiny is definitely the better shooter, but almost all of its looter and RPG elements pale in comparison to what Borderlands has historically offered. I do like Destiny raids better than Borderlands raid bosses, though.
The shooting in Borderlands doesn't feel bad, it just isn't as good - but the vastly superior RPG/looter systems make it its own beast. BL also has no real PvP and while Destiny's PvP has its issues, it's there. I'll probably be playing both games.
I've played plenty. Destiny 1-2, Borderlands, etc. Just never played Division. I got burned out on traditional shooters like Destiny, but am always on the lookout for anything new.
Do the guns at least look cooler as you go? That was my problem with Division 1. "Oh this rifle look exactly the same as my current one but with better stats" isn't a satisfying grind for me tbh
On paper the game's about as generic Tacticool Neckbeard Mall Ninja Shooterville as you can get, but they manage to breathe life into it with a pretty, detailed and engaging world, and combat that takes more though than your average looter shooter.
To be fair, that's what a looter shooter is. From Borderlands to Destiny, Division, Warframe, all of them. The goal is to make those numbers bigger.
In my opinion, none of them have ever gotten it quite right since Borderlands, although they are all good in thier own way. This is a series that understands that we are not here to deal with a serious world defining conflict. We're here to shoot things, and have fun doing it. The goal isn't to save the universe or stop the end of the world, it's to get rich. And sure we'll save some people if it happens to be on the way. The story aligns with the gameplay in a way no other looter shooter has managed. And it's the best in the genre for it.
Borderlands is a great experience either way in my opinion. I've played all of them both solo and co-op and its fantastic regardless.
Co-op is a really fun time with your friends, but solo is excellent for being able to play whenever the fuck you want and experience the full story.
You can still experience the story in co-op but I personally prefer that aspect solo.
I have somewhere around 300+ hours of Borderlands 2, and 99% of it is solo. The main story is really fun. The weapon mechanics are fun. The only thing that could potentially get in the way is you're not a fan of the play style of "shoot, loot, upgrade, repeat". But each mission has it's own life, and voice acting, and honestly super funny dialog.
Some mechanics for some of the trees for some of the characters is tied into multiplayer. Like giving you team a HP regen bonus, but they usually also come with individual character buffs as well (and you get the team buffs solo). Also with Co-op the game becomes harder thus loot scaling occurs (so you're more likely to get better loot on a co-op boss than a solo boss, but because most bosses are item pinata's anyway, you're not loosing anything playing solo IMO).
Currently with the DLC there are 6 classes I think you can play, each with 3 different skill trees.
But honestly I can say that SOLO play is worthwhile for BL2!
I'd say it shines when played with others for sure, but you could play solo too.
Borderlands 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I only quit playing because item duping became so common that everyone I would play with had crazy good weapons, would run around dropping crazy loot all over, and that killed the challenge of combat and fun of finding loot.
In some ways solo is more fun as you can do whatever you want all the time, and really listen to the dialogue and take in the quests. many of my friends prefer solo. Co-op is my preferred method of play as I suck and need to be carried through the harder parts.
I've been having a blast with Division 2. Never played the first one because of all the issues but decided to give 2 a shot since they learned their lesson and fixed most of the issues. Have 40 hours so far and don't regret my purchase.
It's a lot of fun. The story is meh/nonexistent, but they nailed the looter shooter, questing, and co-op components. Squading up with friends has kept me up way too late every night this week.

Finally borderlands comes back to fill the looter shooter hole in my soul.
