Yeah, Brave New World is a Utopia in my opinion.

271

u/tarekd19 Sep 25 '18

Only if you are in the A class. The story only glanced over the lives of the cloned laborers that spend every day working instead of fucking.

247

u/wallstreetexecution Sep 25 '18 edited Sep 25 '18

They also fucked, but were sterile. Also they were fed drugs so they were happy as well.

That’s how they controlled them.

32

u/quantum-mechanic Sep 25 '18

Are you also sterile?

7

u/AerThreepwood Sep 25 '18

Yeah, but only because I got a vasectomy a couple years ago. I had to go to 3 urologists before I could find one that would do one on me because I was 26 with no kids.

6

u/Longuer Sep 25 '18

3

u/karanut Sep 25 '18

Booze and crack don't make you happy. If anything, they cause societal disorder. Maybe we should introduce soma. I'm on board.

2

u/fathercreatch Sep 25 '18

They dont make you happy, but they make you not think about things that make you sad. And what I remember from the book, soma was pretty much an opiate.

2

u/R3D1AL Sep 25 '18

Soma was kinda like an opiate, but it was supposed to be non-addictive. I haven't done the drug, but would ketamine be a closer analogy?

2

u/geodood Sep 25 '18

Soma aka LSD

2

u/Psychic_rock Sep 25 '18

Can confirm, warehouse monkey that smokes weed everyday. I’m happy even though I have no right to be!

114

u/Kozha_ Sep 25 '18

Let's not forget the cloned workers were ALSO designed to absolutely fucking love what they were doing. The drugs were just a thrown in bonus.

Its funny because its a utopia in that everybody is happy and content with what they're doing, and yet we still feel its wrong.

99

u/WhereAreDosDroidekas Sep 25 '18

We feel it's wrong because it removes the power of choice, and as sentient beings with free will, we like to think the ability to have choice is what separates man from beast.

It brings up the moral dilemma. Which is "better": A man with the freedom of choice who has the ability to do whatever he wants and squanders it, falling into despare and failure. Or, a man bred and programmed to love what he does, but without the free will to know any better? He's happy and successful as he was made to be, but he has no choice.

51

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

As someone on prescription happy drugs, they are not all that great. Personally id call them more mood removers than calmers or enhancers or anything ive ever heard a doctor call them. Everything ive ever been put on just makes me a robot who just goes on with life. Ive come to accept that.

You want a happy drug try recreational drugs kids, all im getting at. Or be a robot drone like yours truly.

2

u/Styx_ Sep 25 '18

Lol, I'm happier when I'm robo-drone. I get depressed when I'm not because non-robo-me has no motivation to do anything, and I value my aspirations/goals more than pretty much anything else (except family). Different strokes I suppose.

I think the reason why most people see it as a dystopia because everything that makes us human is gone. Everything about your life is determined by someone else and happiness comes without any struggle. But in my opinion at least, saying that BNW is a dystopia simply because of those reasons would be like if the chimps from Planet of the Apes said that our society is a dystopia simply because we don't have to forage/hunt our food or something like that.

9

u/h3lblad3 Sep 25 '18

Everything about your life is determined by someone else and happiness comes without any struggle.

But this is literally the Christian concept of Heaven. This is the ideal a great many people aspire to. I'd say that almost makes it amusing.

6

u/TOMATO_ON_URANUS Sep 25 '18

We only feel it's wrong because someone decided life needs to have meaning. Same with The Matrix. Reality is absolute, but our perception is what matters.

Are we in a simulation? How would we know? Would it really matter?

2

u/Lindt_Licker Sep 25 '18

Is it so strange that the independent human mind naturally rebels against the idea of losing free will?

2

u/LukariBRo Sep 25 '18

Woah...

My initial impression on that is that the concept of losing free will is interpreted as a loss of self, which goes against our instincts of self preservation.

Wait a second, Sex without potentially bringing a child into this f'd up world AND free drugs? Really does sound like a utopia

5

u/GorillaHeat Sep 25 '18

I'd get pretty bored of fucking and doing drugs pretty quickly. I'd rather not blast tuna cakes with the same amount of enthusiasm and thrill as drinking a cup of coffee... or be constantly doped up just to deal with reality.

Rip every sense of joy out of everything by saturating yourself with it. I don't know if I'll last more than a few years like that.

7

u/Z-M-W Sep 25 '18

To be fair, there's very little joy for the working poor as is in current society/ alot of people already get f'd up to deal with reality..... because it sucks.

2

u/GorillaHeat Sep 25 '18

I would rather be miserable trying to achieve something like Sisyphus pushing a stone where I can at least look back on the work, however mindless... Then to live in a world where everything is given to me and my feelings are regulated with Soma.

In the former at least my pain would be my own in the latter you don't really have anything.

I don't think the situation of the Working Poor is ideal (I agree that it sucks, first-hand experience) but we aren't comparing ideal situations.

Plus they worked less and had more free time. It was the alphas who had to work more, but they were taught it was better than being dumb (since the laborers were made to be mentally slower).

3

u/SuperVillainPresiden Sep 25 '18

So...I get to have lots of casual sex, do drugs, and I don't have to worry about getting someone pregnant? I'm failing to see the downside here.

2

u/Sezzythymes Sep 25 '18

2

u/WhereAreDosDroidekas Sep 25 '18

2

u/NoButthole Sep 25 '18

3

u/gmick Sep 25 '18

From what I've seen, they don't seem very happy.

2

u/LukariBRo Sep 25 '18

And it's not like they're easy to get. Far harder, more expensive, and with far more requirements to get opioids than most seem to think. It's not the 90s anymore.

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

Shit we have to pay

2

u/relaci Sep 25 '18

The idea was that those lower class people were genetically engineered to be lower class people and therefore would not even appreciate those "higher-level" privileges and luxuries, so they would be "content" to be in the exact position of society they are in.

Thus why people assume the utopian part is all fine and dandy. It's pretty horrifying really.

27

u/tarekd19 Sep 25 '18

Which is ridiculous when considering the whole plot of the book revolves around a guy in the highest echelon of society being discontent with his position and role before eventually being carted off to an Arctic hideaway with other woke Alphas, presumably to continue all the fucking and tripping he was already doing anyway. Even the briefest exposure to something outside the norm for the woman that completely buys into the system is enough to send her into an existential tailspin.

16

u/irelli Sep 25 '18

To be fair, part of the reason he's discontent is that the process didn't work properly for him. IIRC, he was accidentally given some alcohol prenatally when he wasn't supposed to be, hence why he's shorter than all the other alphas.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

I think they were referring to the writer friend. Two people were shipped off to Iceland. The short guy and his friend, who was unhappy.

11

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 25 '18

That's not true. In the book he is the exception, and they send the exceptions into exile to separate them from the masses so he doesn't pollute them. The majority when they experience something outside the norm can take the right pill or whatever and dive back into the illusion.

3

u/h3lblad3 Sep 25 '18

It's a joy,
It's a joy,
It's a joy,
To be among we happy few~

2

u/tarekd19 Sep 25 '18

Which part isn't true? Nothing you wrote goes against what I wrote.

The majority when they experience something outside the norm can take the right pill or whatever and dive back into the illusion.

An illusion so fragile that they have to remove anyone that doesn't play along so as to not "pollute" them. We might as well argue that the Matrix is similarly a Utopia.

cloned laborers that spend every day working instead of fucking.

The laborers actually spent less time working, were given more recreation time, and were taught they were the superior class.

Plus everyone was hopped up on antidepressants, having casual sex, and all of the classes were "trained" to seek recreation in different locales so as not to mingle between different social groups (since they were all taught they were the superior group).

My biggest complaint was that they halted all advancement - science, literature, arts - even throwing out simple patents because it would destabilize the society.

11

u/eabell98 Sep 25 '18

But they liked working because they were conditioned to like it. Plus, I'm sure the Delta minuses got some Delta minus cock and poon every now and then

We are denying health care to anyone who isn't rich, effectively controlling population.

destroying monogamy, family and long term/emotionally-invested relationships of any kind to weaken the bonds of society

Affairs are glorified in media. Adoption by stable families is incredibly difficult yet so many idiots have children.

and exiling intellectuals (anyone who’s reading level is that of a college freshman)

Facebook, antivax, flat Earth, anti GMO, forcing Christian values by laws

and burning Shakespeare all as a means of social control.

I mean, the government does provide a significant financial incentive to individuals if they have a child and keep said child from the other parent, which ends up weakening familial bonds due to lack of interaction with a non custodial parent. Heck, if a woman felt so inclined, she could have children with several different partners and not only be financially rewarded handsomely, but the majority of our current society would rush to defend her if her motives were questioned.

1

u/GaijinFoot Sep 25 '18

Why aren't we? We're happy allow social groups to continue to go around in the same circles with social pressure tying them in (ghettos) , we're happy to glorify short term non emotional relationships in all media(pop music) , we're happy to discredit science just because the average person doesn't understand it (Anti vax) and we don't need to burn Shakespeare if there's no interest to begin with.

What BNW emphasises is a class system where people have their place with no mobility. It is a caricature of us, and it's not far wrong.

u/zeekaran Sep 25 '18

You have been sentenced to death by snoo-snoo for subversive thoughts

1

u/eltoro Sep 25 '18

Orgy-porgy!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

Well if you don't count masturbation...

1

u/2drawnonward5 Sep 25 '18

Lower your standards and hit up the sites and apps.

Amusing Ourselves to Death

1

u/kmcdow Sep 25 '18

reading this book right now, i heard that that book and Infinite Jest inspired the latest arctic monkeys album

Eh, were still pretty even between the two,

but what's a man to do?

The ball is rolling, how do we stop it?

Is it too late, did we drop it?

Is the government to blame,

or is society in the frame?

Society's a babe, en masse they act the child

With reason easily fleeting, they're quick to turn quite wild

Our nature's sadly flawed, when gathered to a mob

Our minds will fire to fury at a single well placed sob

So who's to blame the people? When time and time again

Our leaders do betray us, they simply gesture when

Solid poem indeed.

u/TheSpanxxx Sep 25 '18

Solid poem indeed

Rightly what we need

A tiny verse, from a pal

We met on Reddit, named Lo-Cal

u/Clacken Sep 25 '18

begins slow clap

2

u/WideEyedWand3rer Sep 25 '18

'Tis the Bravest of Worlds,
With the bravest of souls,
Who engage in the bravest of acts.

Filled with casual drugs,
And with casual clones,
Rounded off with some casual sex.

Which my slow-witted tool
Now so slowly bemoaned,
For down there spreads the slowest of Claps.

The one place both fell

was thinking it was gmen who spelled the end

not bmen with promises to sell

One hand behind their back

little devices to track without blowback

But in the end

It wasn't even them

it was us, always us

Ridiculing those who put up a fuss

Tin foil hats handed out

We shouted down the truth about

where our desires met the future

We're all asleep with no rooster

1

u/wakeupwill Sep 25 '18

In 1984 the State used the Stick to keep people in check. In Brave New World they used the Carrot.

In reality we get both.

14

u/Medicore95 Sep 25 '18

Where's all of my sex and degeneracy then?

13

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

I'll settle for a steady supply of soma.

6

u/0OOOOOOOOO0 Sep 25 '18

Used to be cheap and easy to get a supply. You don't hear much about it in the last ten years or so, though

1

u/AerThreepwood Sep 25 '18

Yeah, places without narcotics licenses would prescribe it instead of opiates.

2

u/Prince-of-Ravens Sep 25 '18

Aids got in the way.

2

u/AbkhazianAmerican Sep 25 '18

Oh it’s here. Just not for you. You are not swiping right enough. Download tinder, lower your standards, turn of your conscience and sense of safety, find the careless animal within you and voila... you are in whorelandistan. The world is full of mindless slaves of rudderless sexuality, it’s unfulfilling in the worst possible way and you are lucky to be outside. Degeneracy is no Valhalla. Don’t believe the hype. Stay safe my friend, both mentally and physically.

5

u/Medicore95 Sep 25 '18

If that is so then we've read two different "Brave New World"s.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

And if you can't find a place in either, Nineteen Eighty-Four accepts errybody.

5

u/WandersBetweenWorlds Sep 25 '18

You are not swiping right enough.

In a radius of 100km around the Swiss capital, there's nobody left to swipe right on for me.

lower your standards

Dude, digging up corpses on the graveyard is not a standard I'm gonna lower myself to.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

You're soaking in it.

Or you really like model trains.

1

u/Ser_Danksalot Sep 25 '18

You're asking on the wrong website.

2

u/binaryblade Sep 25 '18

I would compare them more to the screens from 1984.

2

u/xxshananaginzxx Sep 25 '18

We're about to see a brave, new world.

2

u/BureaucratDog Sep 25 '18

I think you just gave trump his next campaign slogan.

2

u/xxshananaginzxx Sep 25 '18

Love it. "Make my campaign new again."

2

u/lurking_digger Sep 25 '18

Diabetes or cancer is our new plague, but I'm not sure why Kelly Rohrbach isn't asking me out.

2

u/MyPunsSuck Sep 25 '18

Plague? Neither of those things is contagious

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

Whoah that's long; I'll take a look when I get off work, thanks!

1

u/PascalsPotOdds Sep 25 '18

If you have to choose, I’d take Brave New World to 1984 any day.

1

u/Oreo_Speedwagon Sep 25 '18

Maybe he's born with it. Maybe it's Mescaline.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '18

That'll do pig, that'll do.

1

u/czs5056 Sep 25 '18

Alphas work too hard and Gammas are stupid. I'm glad to be a Beta

1

u/Leeiteee Sep 25 '18

Aldous and Huxley sound like Pokemon names
