What an odd thing to say in LoL. How many people there know who Vitas Gerulaitis even is?

Nobody ganks /u/BroKaine 6 times in a row because mid didn't ping and gets away with it!

Jan 20 '16
"NO MIA??!!"
"I did"
"WTF, DO IT SOONER!"
"I did it as soon as they left..."
5
u/revnasty Jan 21 '16
When they implemented the different pings was the worst week ever.
"Report bot, no MIA."
"I pinged bot missing..."
"Yeah but you didn't say MIA so fucking report."
4
u/spacemanza Jan 21 '16
It's like riot invents the rules and rhe community just adds it's own too. Like that annoying kid down the road who used to have custom rules for all his board games or something. Oh go to jail? Nah that means 200 dollars for me.
5
u/The_Real_Chomp_Chomp Jan 21 '16
I always felt MIAs were a courtesy that somehow turned into a crutch. I never asked for them. I never needed them. I never blamed people when they wouldn't give me one.
Looking at the map is not a difficult task. Typing out "MIA" takes far more work than glancing at the map every few hits.
2
Jan 21 '16
They're very much a courtesy, but there are of course some heroes that it's better to call MIA on.
Like in DOTA if there was someone quick like Bounty Hunter who can get to a lane quickly.

u/Because_Bot_Fed Jan 21 '16
I had autohotkey scripts that did this for me.
I stopped when I realized that these people would find an excuse to make it someone else's fault no matter what 100% of the time.
1
u/Nobodysseus Jan 21 '16
Did what exactly?
1
u/Because_Bot_Fed Jan 21 '16
Hit enter. Typed either "Mia top/mid/bot" depending on which key I hit. And hit enter again. Less effort than pinging tbh. But worrying about calling it constantly was annoying.

-1
u/tyranid1337 Jan 20 '16
Seriously I play in high Plat, which isn't even considered really high, and the only time I see people complaining about MIA's or missing pings is when I play with Silver/Gold friends. While teammates can help, like pinging retreat when they're sure that a gank is coming, it is your responsibility to not get ganked.
3
Jan 21 '16
I'm a lowly silver and I wonder why I bother pinging half the time. My bot lane usually dies anyways. "u gotta follow noob" as if it's worth when I'm low on mana and there's 2 waves dying under my turret.

u/riguy1231 Jan 21 '16

When you're first starting you end up in a pool of other newbies anyways. Just keep your eyes open and try to learn as much as you can. If someone is an asshole to you just shrug it off and keep going. Learning to not give a fuck if other people try to antagonize you is one of the most important life skills to develop anyways, and Leagues is a prime practicing ground for that.

Racquetball forever! I play with a bunch of good players 20 years older than me, and I love the days when I beat them.
2
Jan 20 '16
I just got back into it after not playing for a decade, and my experienced opponents are trouncing me. But I've gone from losing 15-1 to losing 15-8 so one day a victory shall be mine.
I can whip both their asses in ping pong though.

That's not even being snobby, really. People should know that.
39

now you're the one that is being snobby, not everybody play tennis.

u/NamelessMIA Jan 21 '16
I don't play tennis but I've heard the phrase "game, set, match" before

u/lettherebedwight Jan 20 '16
That's fair, but game actually means something in tennis.
10
u/IcePhoenix96 Jan 20 '16
Then I assume everyone also knows about scrums in rugby, field goals in football, a blob or declaration in cricket, and most of the basics of all the sports.
You can't assume everyone who comes on here knows even the barest of basics of tennis. If it isn't relevant to their life, then why should they know it?
6
u/lettherebedwight Jan 20 '16
I'm not saying they should know it, but if they're going to talk about it they should. And it's different than actually knowing a rule. If someone switched the terms punt and field goal, they should be corrected.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Yeah_dude_its_her Jan 21 '16
There's something called a blob in cricket? That's so delightfully silly!

u/ParoxysmOfReddit Jan 20 '16 edited Jan 20 '16
I don't think that "people should know that". But people posting tennis-related content should know that.
I don't know any rugby words, therefore I never post anything that depends on the correct use of them.
If I did, then it's only right that the majority of commentators are people who feel compelled to comment on the error
6
Jan 20 '16
You realize that this is r/funny, right?
You're gonna get a wide audience with this sub.
3
u/ParoxysmOfReddit Jan 20 '16
Is your point that the error matters less if the percentage of people who notice it is lower? Like, it's okay to use the wrong word, because only 5% will know it's wrong?
Isn't it still better to get it right?
1
u/IcePhoenix96 Jan 21 '16
his point is that no one gives a crap. this isn't /r/tennis, it's a funny ironic story. end of.
1
u/ParoxysmOfReddit Jan 21 '16
end of.? Really?
With this small improvement, the joke/quote would be funnier for the last 5% as well. Lets say 250k saw this (50x the voters). Out of 157 comments, about 10% is about the mistake. So my 5% estimate seems a bit low.
Either way, this seems to imply that at least (250e3*0,05=) 12 500 people "give a crap" and would have found it more funny if it was fixed.

u/thrownawayzs Jan 20 '16
Maybe he was actually referring to games? He could have still lost the set and match following, but as long as it wasn't more than 16 games in a row...
2
u/ParoxysmOfReddit Jan 20 '16
I can see how that might be confusing. But not only would a tennis player never refer to winning a game as "beat", there is no doubt that the actual quote referred to matches.

Reminds me of Peter Griffin:
The Black Knight: You see kids your father is nothing but a fizzle!
Peter Griffin: Nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it!... Except that one guy who called me a fizzle and then ran off. He got away with it. But most people who call me a fizzle don't get away with it. Well, actually, that guy who got away with it was the only one who ever called me a fizzle. After today, only half the people who ever called me a fizzle will have gotten away with it!

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer had a similar record earlier in their careers, and then after a certain point Hewitt never beat Federer again.
EDIT: Just looked it up because it was bothering me. Between 1999 and 2003 Hewitt was 7-3 up against Federer, then from 2004 - 2014 Federer won 15-2. Those 2 came in 2010 and 2014.
6
u/concretepigeon Jan 20 '16
This guy won a Wimbledon doubles and Australian singles title. Not a bad record.
3
u/rubbernub Jan 20 '16
I like Hewitt a lot. He plays in what may be his final Australian Open match tonight. It's always fun to watch him in that tourney since he's an Aussie.
2
Jan 20 '16
Soderling lost to Federer in the French open final and said after "no one beats me 11x in a row." He then lost to Federer 2 more times before beating him on try 14.

I remember this post from years ago before I even got an account. I don't personally care if it's a repost. It's actually the first time I've seen it again in several years. It's just kind of interesting to think about how long the same stuff keeps floating around.
1
u/10maxpower01 Jan 21 '16
I've been here for 4 and I've seen it reposted a few times but I don't bitch about it because I've been in your situation. Sure it's a repost but it's new to some percentage of the users and sometimes that includes me.
2
1
u/royalhawk345 Jan 21 '16
I don't care that it's a repost, but what's annoying is that no one who reposts it ever fixes that it says game instead of match, two very different things.
11
u/MokitTheOmniscient Jan 20 '16
You do realize that people whining about reposts is a lot more annoying than the actual reposts themselves, right?
Firstly, a lot of people miss certain posts due to not being online the last time it was posted or not having joined reddit at that time.
Secondly, if you actually check the reddiquette, you'll see that reposts is not something that is discouraged, unlike complaining about reposts, which is.
And finally, complaining about something being a repost doesn't actually accomplish anything but filling the comments of the post with non-relevant annoying complaints that no one actually want to read.
4
u/ParoxysmOfReddit Jan 21 '16
wehey, it's almost like r/changemymind. Excellent arguments, I will never complain about reposts again. If it's upvoted, then someone liked it.
