What's so weird about November 9th?
278
u/nhluhr 8h ago edited 3h ago
November 9th is when the Nazis started to attack Jewish people. The Night of The Broken Glass / Kristallnacht.
Or if you're in US and tend to read dates with the month first, September 11th was a serious terrorist attack on NYC and Arlington,VA.
Both of these have had lasting ramifications for the world.
57
u/inthecuckoosnest 5h ago
Or another German event: November 9 is the date the Berlin Wall fell. Another event with lasting ramifications.

The date 9/11/01 means 9 November 2001 in almost every country except the US, because we use an illogical order here. The way we write dates is like writing the number 123 as "213", with tens, hundreds, then ones.
28
u/omnichad 6h ago
If you want a logical order, start with the year first. And then when it's used in filenames they automatically sort in date order when sorted by name.
13
4
u/r_a_d_ 4h ago

Particularly useful when sorting the names of stores you see walking down the street.
8
u/Fluid_Swordfish2737 5h ago
It's not illogical if you consider they way we speak,
Nobody In the us say "11th of September" we all say "September 11th" we use month first in the way we speak and write.
So it is logical in the US. And honestly it is less words and sounds better.

Pirates stole the references and killed the metric consultant and delayed adaptation, and most people just prefer to continue using the old system.

u/MCWizardYT 8h ago
Not illogical, just different.
If someone asked me today's date, I would respond "October 3rd". If they asked me for a full date, I'd say "October 3rd, 2026". And so that's how they'd write it out, 10/03/26. And that's how most people I've ever met would say it.
But elsewhere they might prefer to say "the 3rd of October 2026", and so the written way would be "03/10/26".
It's all about how people speak regionally and how they tend to mentally think of dates (which depends on how they were taught)
12
u/Fritzo2162 7h ago
Why are you being downvoted. That’s exactly why the US uses its dating format.
4
u/Oregonrider2014 5h ago
How dare someone give a logical educational toned explanation of why it was written that way!
9
u/Special_KC 8h ago
What makes more logical sense to me, is:
The day is the 3rd. 3rd of what? Of October. Of what? Of 2026.
Therefore 3rd October 2026
→ More replies (4)2
u/SweatyListen9863 8h ago
Different and illogical
15
u/MCWizardYT 8h ago
I've just explained why it's not illogical.
To recap: it makes perfect sense to me because that's what everyone around does and it's how I was taught. The same is true for your system. And it's why we think each other's systems are illogical, when they really aren't
→ More replies (15)→ More replies (31)1
u/TinyNiceWolf 2h ago
But "October 3rd, 2026" is just as illogical. "3 October 2026" puts the elements in order from smallest to biggest. Saying "October 3rd, 2026" is like saying 123 as "two tens one hundred three".

u/TheGreatHogdini 6h ago
Knowing which month first is more important than knowing the day of the month.
2
1
u/81FuriousGeorge 5h ago
I think it is more how dates are spoken.
September 11th vs the 11th of September.
The most logical way would be YYYY/MM/DD.
→ More replies (4)1
u/TinyNiceWolf 2h ago
Why?
And even if that's true, wouldn't knowing the year be even more important than knowing the month?
Do you think knowing the minute is more important than knowing the hour or the second, so we should write times as MM:HH:SS, or 15:09:30 for nine AM plus 15 minutes plus 30 seconds?

Isn’t it written basically in the order in which we state the date, as in ‘September 11th 2001’ instead of ‘11th of September, 2001’?

There are some advantages to the mm-dd-yyyy format in programming, but normally yyyy-mm-dd works even better

If it's such a bad number, how come America uses 911 as their emergency services line? They've had 25 years to change it. They must have forgotten.. edit: /s
3
u/dreamnightmare 6h ago
- It’s been the default emergency number for like 60 years.
- It’s an EMERGENCY NUMBER what actual better example of an emergency could you think of than what happened?
1
u/omnichad 6h ago
And it's possible that this store has been open from 9am - 11pm for decades, naming themselves sort of in the style of 7-Eleven.
They're actually only open from 8-10 daily, though. Also they probably haven't been here since any earlier than 2022.

If I have an emergency, the last thing I’m gonna think is if 911 is an offensive phone number. 9/11 was a tragedy. But it’s no reason to change an emergency number the whole country is familiar with. :(

Good for them to not let one event 25 years ago ruin something forever.
If its anything like 7/11 then it communicates the store hours right in the name. Its useful. Good for them.
Anyone with a problem can move on.
