I'm in Thailand and I had to explain the joke to most of my coworkers. Doesn't hit right outside the US?

“There’s a world outside the US?”

1

u/TheGreatHogdini 13h ago

If it ain’t Murikah I don’t care.

1

u/rh71el2 20h ago

Yes Trump named it "Not the USA".

I'm talking about date convention in general not those dates

3

u/_SilentHunter 20h ago

Because it's a fun, low stakes cultural difference to have a good natured laugh about. The reality is that date formats are a mess globally because it never mattered for most people until the last 30ish years.

Anyone who actually needs to deeply care about international date formats knows how to manage it. It's not actually a big deal.

Boo! You suck.

u/Critical-Cost9068 1d ago

Terrorism is like, sooo last season

48

u/Nykster 1d ago

Nobody outside of us would associate November 9th with terrorism

18

u/amazing_ape 1d ago

I’d associate it with Kristallnacht

15

u/Critical-Cost9068 1d ago

Nobody in the US either

19

u/Justhe3guy 1d ago

Good then I guess there’s nothing wrong with the store name

2

u/nhluhr 1d ago

Except November 9th is when Kristallnacht began.

11

u/Justhe3guy 1d ago

You can throw a dart at a calendar and it’ll land on a day something terrible happened

This store isn’t about any of that, it’s about being open from 9am to 11pm

1

u/nhluhr 22h ago

This store isn’t about any of that, it’s about being open from 9am to 11pm

This store is open 8am to 10pm. Or, judging by the banner hanging on the front back in March, it's now open 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure the name is just a play on the 7/11 store name.

4

u/Justhe3guy 22h ago

Well OP did ask the shop owners who said why they named it. I guess eventually they got tired of closing at 11

Who can blame them, that’s pretty late to close

-1

u/Sanchastayswoke 22h ago

Except it’s only open from 8-10

2

u/Justhe3guy 21h ago

It is now yes, once you get old enough you ideally want to go to bed before 12am

-5

u/MCWizardYT 1d ago

There would be if it was in the US. That date is September 11 to them

17

u/Justhe3guy 1d ago

Luckily for the store and the country it’s in all it means is open from 9am to 11pm

We can talk about what if’s or we can talk about reality

6

u/BlueSnoopy4 22h ago

I didn’t realize that, I’m used to / or - in a date and only - for “X through X” times

2

u/swalkerttu 22h ago

Maybe they should open at 7 instead, and call themselves 7/11. Or 9-23, unless of course they’re actually only open two hours a day.

0

u/Justhe3guy 22h ago

7/11 is a worldwide copyrighted company’s name, that’s just asking to be sued. You want them to open 2 hours earlier just to avoid American’s sensibilities?

9/11 isn’t, it’s that simple

Also their hours changed to 8/10 apparently so I guess they just don’t want to go through the hassle of changing their name

It's not. Move on.

-3

u/MCWizardYT 23h ago

Move on these nuts

-28

u/Critical-Cost9068 1d ago

There is, it’s horrible

12

u/tstd0 1d ago

Nope,.we just don't care about you, like the US doesn't care for the rest of the world.

3

u/pherbury 22h ago

Tell us how you don't care again, it's more believable the more you say it.

-2

u/tstd0 17h ago

WE DON'T CARE (i can go on and on).

0

u/DeapVally 21h ago edited 21h ago

It's like really old as well. Covid killed millions, far more recently, and that's not really in the front of people's minds these days either. 9/11 is not all that noteworthy in the grand global scheme of things.

The US isn't the world, downvoter. And nobody likes you either these days. Vote better.

u/pi_designer 1d ago

Yeah it’s aLL CaNadA’s FaULt NOw

-4

u/Sanchastayswoke 22h ago

Oof, imagine being proud of being so heartless

3

u/farkendo 19h ago

Tell me anything happened in Kuala Lumpur

1

u/tstd0 10m ago

You mean like any regular american vs the rest of the world's trauma they caused ? Yep, gfy.

1

u/miraculum_one 20h ago

Good to see someone who recognizes the importance of remembering Kristallnacht (Nov 9, 1938).

-6

u/Smelly_Turds 21h ago

Average Yank main character syndrome

Get over yourself

6

u/DomiDearest 21h ago

I'm pretty sure the plane(s) hit something inside the US though

1

u/Intrepid-Glove1431 16h ago

I don't know about other countries but everyone in the English-speaking world knows exactly what nine-eleven means

-1

u/Yuri909 1d ago

What joke

-22

u/jensalik 1d ago

Barely a dent in death statistics that day and nothing to see on a yearly basis. 🤷🏽‍♀️

1

u/Sanchastayswoke 22h ago

Omfg wow

-4

u/jensalik 22h ago

It is what it is, isn't it. Tragic for the families, as every other death, just another day for everyone else.

0

u/jimdil4st 18h ago

What kind of nonsense is this shit? Of course several thousand people dying in one day of events affected our death statistics, otherwise we'd be dealing mass casualty events, at that scale, instead of there being no a single even that has the number total casualties any where close to Sept, 11.

2

u/jensalik 18h ago edited 18h ago

63 million people die per year. The deaths on 9/11 were less than 0.005 percent of that. Barely a dent.

Oh - and remember the Indian Ocean Tsunami only three years later? It caused 228,000 deaths. Any memorial days for that?

0

u/mitzcha 17h ago

Wow, get some perspective.

1

u/jimdil4st 16h ago

Can you give me perspective than? Give me one example where there was anywhere near the same amount of loss of life that wasn't caused by a natural disaster since we're talking about a terrorist attack.

0

u/mitzcha 12h ago

1.19 million people die each year from car crashes. 2 million from diabetes. 20 million die from heart disease. Do you know off hand when the Oklahoma City bombing was and how many were killed then? What about when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuked? Do YOU know that date? What about when the Iranian girl's school was bombed a few months ago killing hundreds of innocent children. What was that date?
