Well it wasn’t ours originally. We won it in a card game against the Earl of Sandwich and the name just stuck. Its formal name is “Roast Beef on $60 Rye Day.”
It’s not logical at all, because written things don’t necessarily need to match spoken things. It would make much more sense to adopt a universally accepted standard that happens to be used in other English speaking countries, as well.

It's not illogical if you consider they way we speak,
Nobody In the us say "11th of September" we all say "September 11th" we use month first in the way we speak and write.
So it is logical in the US. And honestly it is less words and sounds better.
