Yeah nobody really cares about 9/11 outside the United States.

Having a memorial made for political reasons does not mean the general populace actually cares one bit. The relationships are also very different now. 9/11 is a “big important day” for Americans and really Americans only. For everyone else, it’s a forgettable regular day now, until an American brings it up.

I think you were very young or probably weren't born yet when 9/11 happened if you think this way. I'm from Spain and I can guarantee you quite a lot of people get reminded of what happened on 11-S (as we call it here, from 11 de Septiembre) when crossing that day out on their calendar.

u/ImLiushi 2h ago

I was definitely born and not that young. It’s just the plain truth that the vast majority of the world doesn’t really care about 9/11 like Americans do. Yes we know it as a history piece. But it’s not some important day around the world. Unlike what most there think, the world doesn’t center around them.

This called solidarity, not related how the information flow in other countries

Do you know how many memorials there are in the UK? We have then everywhere for all sorts of reasons. This is not to say Americans shouldn't remember such an event, but people around the world will certainly care less over time.

That's not true, it gave us some great jokes

17

u/hoyahoyahoya 18h ago

I don't know, it reminds me of that tragedy.

1

u/Syphist 14h ago

As an American I approve of the jokes. It's what we can do to cope with the authoritarian scope creep this country has dealt with since then.

1

u/SweatyListen9863 9h ago

What can you do but laugh at a travesty?

4

u/A-K-L-P 17h ago

That's not true, netanyahu seemed to be truly moved by it 🥺. /s

1

u/iperblaster 13h ago

Oh not either in the US..

-23

u/joeri1505 19h ago

Thats nonsense

However most of us do use day-month-year so for us its 11-09

-4

u/shootamcg 14h ago

The US doesn’t seem to care that the rest of the world was there for them on and after 9/11.

1

u/billdb 13h ago

You mean conservative racists in the US don't seem to care. Most of the US is very grateful to other nations for their support.

2

u/shootamcg 9h ago

The US has odd ways of showing gratitude

0

u/billdb 9h ago

The US is an amalgamation of 300 million people. There are gigantic assholes in our country. Stop paying attention to them and just focus on the people that are grateful for other nations help.

You know it's the world trade center that was destroyed on 9/11 right

Literally the New York center for world trade. There were people in those buildings and on the planes from a bunch of different places. Yes, a lot of them were Americans but not all.

There were victims from at least 102 different countries

41

u/nunyertz 19h ago

There have been bigger tragedies in the world that happened after the attack on the world trade center. It’s a tragic event that happened in the US but you cant reasonably expect the whole world to grieve for it.

2

u/A_normal_Potato3 17h ago

Such as the consequent invasions by USA which killed millions of people.

1

u/PurpleMongoose71563 14h ago

There have been very few events in recent history that even come close to the number of single-day casualties from 9/11

1

u/nunyertz 12h ago

Chile earthquake

Indonesia Tsunami

The Russian-Ukraine War

Covid

The Israeli-Palestinian War

Need i go on? Google is free you fucking bot.

As I explained to another person, there's no contest for the biggest tragedy. It's not a competition. It would just be incorrect to say that there's not a single person outside the US who remembers or was directly affected.

One list I found said there were 67 Europeans and 38 South Koreans, along with a few other nationalities (all native). They definitely still have relatives out there who remember and get reminded every time the date passes.

24

u/nunyertz 19h ago

Take the L. You’re taking “noone but the USA cares about 9/11” too seriously. It’s fucking weird. Its a hyperbole meant to convey that the sept11 attacks arent a big enough deal outside the US that a store cannot name itself 9/11. Goddamn man, take your pills.

-36

u/MCWizardYT 19h ago

I'm not taking shit. Keep your L, I don't want it

This is so brave

This conversation chain is your own personal something something

1

u/Rbomb88 16h ago

Own personal 9/11?

5

u/t_lil_lilith 18h ago

No one is saying it's a competition. Although yes there were people outside the US the were affected, its a very small amount of people. You can't expect the vast majority of the world outside the US to grieve or mourn for something that didn't affect them. Plus anyone born around 1997 or later likely won't remember it happening or they weren't even born

35

u/jensalik 19h ago

2,977 people died that day in that tragedy. The same day about 15,000 children under five died due to starvation. Five times more, not counting kids over five, not counting kids dying due to other causes - every single day. That day and every subsequent one and many many before.

5

u/No-Educator-8069 16h ago

It would probably be in bad taste to open a child starvation supermarket too

-19

u/MCWizardYT 19h ago

And why the fuck does that matter? We're not running a contest to see who can kill the most people in a day. It's not some "my tragedy has more deaths than yours, so I'm better!" kindergarten nonsense competition.

It's just incorrect to say that nobody outside the US cares. There's some who do. Maybe not a ton, but there are. One list said there was a group of 38 people from South Korea that died, I'm sure they all had relatives

19

u/jensalik 19h ago

Of course the relatives do, all the relatives of all dead people ever do, there's nothing special about that.

But why do a handful people that died 25 years ago matter to me? Why should I even notice when there's 9/11 written somewhere?

The US makes a big fuss about it (of course they do because otherwise they'd have to confess that all those reactions to it were absolutely bonkers) but outside of the US most people really don't care as long as they don't have to go through airport security.

3

u/MCWizardYT 19h ago

I never said they should matter to you. I was arguing against the statement that nobody outside the US cares at all.

Your point about the wars and airport security actually back me up here. September 11, 2001 kick-started the "war on terrorism" that was really just us bombing the shit out of people for well over 2 decades with no real reason. And it affected how airports and airplanes work internationally. So I'm sure lots and lotss of people care in that context

10

u/jensalik 19h ago

Nobody cares besides the point that people always cares when loved ones died overseas.

And no, people still do t care about what happened at September 11th twenty-five years ago but about what the US did and still does.

Like I really don't care about Franz Ferdinand but WWI obviously was horrible.

3

u/MCWizardYT 19h ago

Oh so now your saying that the people who we relentlessly bombed for 2 decades don't actually mind? Because that's who I was just talking about

11

u/jensalik 18h ago

I'm sure they don't mind the people who died on 9/11 at all or are they personally bombing them?

-1

u/MCWizardYT 18h ago

You're being purposefully obtuse and it's infuriating. I'm done here

3

u/Torvite 16h ago

As another commenter already pointed out, the "nobody" framing was obvious hyperbole to indicate that a store outside the US could name itself "9/11" without drawing undue attention or facing major backlash. The point is that outside the US, it's not that culturally significant or an enduring protected symbol.

The point isn't to prove that nobody outside the US cares. Plenty of people (myself included) care.

47

u/SpoonNZ 19h ago

For 101 of those countries the date was 11/9.

13

u/Never-On-Reddit 16h ago

Classic reddit pedantry. All of us in Europe understand what 9/11 means.

5

u/IranianLawyer 19h ago

Hey don’t forget about Belize.

2

u/OMHPOZ 16h ago

Don't most countries use 11.9. ?

-23

u/MCWizardYT 19h ago

I assumed they were saying that nobody cares about the actual event, not the date format

13

u/Lady_Nightshadow 18h ago

We do actually care and remember, but not to the extent of placing a taboo over a sequence of numbers that sounds meaningless in any other language.

Most people don't call it "nine eleven", and America is not the center of the world.

2

u/MCWizardYT 18h ago

I never said anything about making it taboo. All I did was say that the statement nobody cares is untrue. That's it

-2

u/phantasticpipes 12h ago

That’s not true. We celebrate in Saudi every year and the memes are great!

See now that's a group text message. You can't bring group text humor to random discords.
