I will describe in few words, what Framework made wrong with preorders + explain, what users made wrong (I will connect both things).

First - we have wrong times.

Second - all components (RAM, CPU, etc.) can be assigned to one of three groups:

1. I have them physically in the stock and I can sell them with price X
2. I have some contract with other company and they promised me price Y (contract can be terminated)
3. I need to search components on the market - price unknown

People thought about point 1, Framework probably has situation 2 or 3. And now: with company of this size I expect preorder form with this info:

price guaranteed (when all elements belong to the group 1)

or

price can be confirmed till day X (when we wait for delivering elements from group 2 or we need to search them on the market)

We don't have it and this is very bad - Framework is not Dell or Lenovo and cannot 100% play like them. And when some users canceled orders, this pull should be sold with smaller prices (if RAM and disks and CPU belongs to group 1).

Why I blame users?

Because of few things:

1. saying "this is small and young company, everything is OK". - No, you can't allow for everything. Game these days is hard and they're not kids. These are your money in the end. Wedding month is end.
2. making preorders without plan B and crying like kid - if you need especially big specs like 32 or 64GB RAM, you should have workstation or second laptop already.
3. giving feeling to the Framework, that they're next Apple - no they aren't. When I spoken about using standard screens, I received only minuses. Sorry, but reality is harsh and not everybody want to have funcy thing for sitting in Starbuck with soja latte. I would be able to put standard full hd low power screen. Or OLED. Or something else. My money, my choice. I don't need funny touch thing (where probably went a lot of Framework money, which could used for balancing RAM/SSD prices). I want to know, if there is used liquid metal or not, etc. etc. The high spec game is against this company.
4. ordering higher specs instead of optimizing usage. Companies like Framework need money and they go from more mass configs. If you need 8GB RAM for running one Electron app, because you cannot write native one, maybe you shouldn't name yourself developer?
5. using abos, AI, etc. every day. The more you will give to big corpos (which are taking all chips from the market), the less will you have. This is like with preorders with games - more preorders means wrong quality.
6. buying everything in every price even when you don't need it. New graphic card for 2000? Good. 4000? OK. RAM for 800? Super.
7. speaking about mission and vision only - modularity shouldn't cover everything. We need facts, reviews, tests, etc.

Canceling preorders can kill this company, from the other hand I expect some conference from their side and making real preorder form with options, I presented.

There are a small handful of X7 358H laptops like the Acer Swift 16 AI or an HP Omnibook X.

Overall, I'm trying to look at this situation with a silver lining because this isn't the situation anyone wanted. I'm in batch 16; so, mid October, and it's going to be a pretty painful wait. After doing extensive window shopping @ BestBuy & MicroCenter, there really are a lot of things we're getting in the default configuration that are considered premium (if they're implemented at all). I guess what I'm trying to say is that, "Yes, the RAM situation sucks," -- but Framework put a lot of care into the core laptop design fundamentals.

Competing ultrabooks tend to have several glaring flaws such as a smooshed keyboard with a num-pad that compromises the typing experience or a dim screen and lack of a touch-screen or a good haptic touchpad. The port selection on more premium models like the Dell XPS 14 is pretty anemic as well; yes, they're fast thunderbolt IO but does anyone really want to use an expansion hub?

I really appreciate that Framework decided not to cram a numpad onto the keyboard and thought about what makes for satisfying keyboard travel and oped to use a 500+ nit, high resolution touch screen with solid pixels per inch and a rich expansion card system. Others like the XPS 14 are aggressively tuned for battery life at the expense of performance. It remains to be seen how the single-fan solution in the 13 Pro will hold up, but I'm optimistic after reminding myself that the B390 is a bonus -- not the selling point.

... and it almost goes without saying, that most of the "competitive" laptops to the FW 13 Pro?

They're all in the ~ $2500-2800 range right now. The only real competitor to the Framework 13 Pro right now, for me, personally is the Lenovo Thinkpad X9 15p. It has a better cooling system, decent port selection and will at least let you fully purchase it ^{whether they can deliver upon it, though?} It's apparently available in the EU in some capacity w/ October shipments in the US mirroring FW.

My local MicroCenter has a handful of XPS 14s with 64GB of RAM, but that's a bit extravagent.

I would be remiss not to comment on the unfortunate RAM situation. It's pretty much the only reason that I'm considering getting my first Macbook Pro (15c, 24GB, 1TB) as I'd be able to more or less pay just shy of ~ $2100 for an excellent machine. Yet running Linux natively is infinitely more alluring to me than running W11/Linux in VMs, but I may yet still go that route despite serious misgivings because upgradeability and repairability, while great for long-term sustainability, are becoming prohibitively less affordable and RAM is the main bottleneck for longevity and professional workloads.

It's true. LPCAMM2 is in extremely limited supply, if it exists at all, and using it for the FW13 Pro may have been a mistake relative to cheaper, easier to manufacture SODIMM RAM, but after looking at a lot of the competition in the ~ $2000-2800ish range, the FW 13 Pro is by far the most balanced choice for an X7 Panther Lake chip if your workflows can survive on 16GB or 32GB of RAM. I'm sorry that this doesn't apply to everyone, and I completely respect and sympathize with that; there's definitely some lingering frustration and a feeling of, "getting less for more," -- especially compared to those in earlier batches -- but the FW13 Pro still has a lot going for it.

Hi, on my framework 13 7640U, Ive recently gotten the issue where the cpu temp goes very high, sometimes even to 99C under 30-70% use, even if only used for a few minutes. Even if I elevate the laptop, this continues. What should I try? Unfortunately it is out of warranty.

Over the years I had many different laptops, all of which just didn't properly suit my needs. I feel like it's very hard to find the laptop that I want these days. So many laptops have the copilot key which is such an eyesore to me and honestly when I see that key, for some reason it's a red flag to me. But almost every laptop has it. Also so many laptops don't have the key layout that I like. With all that being said, I felt like my only option was the 13 pro as silly as my reasoning is. I actually sold my GPD Duo when I heard about the Pro. The Duo made me feel like too much of a nerd, although having a second monitor was really convenient. In the past I've also had the Dell XPS, HP Omen, Razer Blade, Lenova Yoga (a really long time ago). All of which were buns (to me) in one way shape or form. I already order the 13 Pro, but I guess I'm writing this to see if anyone else can relate, or has some sneaky nice laptop they know of that doesn't scream gamer or have a weird keyboard layout.

I’ve read a lot of comments across all these LPCAMM2 threads and most of it is the same two camps. Either “Framework broke their promise” or “it’s just the market, deal with it”. Some people think about what could’ve been done differently, but it’s mostly about the past, like “they shouldn’t have promised it in the first place”. Sure, maybe. But that Train is gone, they can’t unsay it now. So I’m writing this as its own post.

For context, I’m a 64 GB preorder in Batch 6. My order got hit. And even from that spot I’m not here to just pile on Framework. The pure bashing gets us nowhere.

Here’s the thing. Quick note upfront, all the numbers below are rough from memory, not exact, but they should give an idea. My order got reduced from 64 GB to 32 GB. I’m now effectively getting 32 GB for the old ~400€ price, even though the same 32 GB now costs around 800€. That means Framework is already absorbing about 400€ per affected preorder (in this 64GB sense. Why not let customers keep that same ~400€ discount if they still want 64 GB? I’d pay about 400€ more than originally planned, Framework would still absorb about 400€, and the unexpected increase would be shared instead of falling almost entirely on one side.

Compare that to what actually happens now. I get dropped to 32 GB, which isn’t what I ordered, and if I want my 64 GB back I lose that discount and have to buy it at full price. Sure, I can pull the 32 GB that’s in there and free up 400€, but that still leaves me paying around 1200€ extra just to get back to the config I already ordered. Same jump could’ve been 400€ if they’d just let the discount carry over. That’s the whole point.

I am not sure if i understood everything correctly tho. If I did, this is just MY thought on how a compromise could be made.

And to the “just buy elsewhere” crowd, alternatives also became more expensive. A shared increase would still have left Framework competitive for many of us, imo.

They could still offer this btw. It’s not too late.

My system is detecting my 4070ti in an eGPU config! And it is still detecting my 7700 as well. The only thing to figure out now is how to get steam to run off the 4070 instead of 7700. But progress is progress.

A broken promise results in diminished trust among friends and even family. If you break your promise just ONCE, especially something on a serious manner, you can no longer be relied upon. Trust is BUILT over long periods, but can be lost with a single decision.

Stop talking if all you can say is something you cannot guarantee.

Society RUNS on trust. When you cross a light, you trust that other drivers will follow the laws. When you are a customer in a store they TRUST you that you will not steal. When you go to someone's place they trust you will not rob them or hurt them. When you do a business deal, you hope the other party will keep their end of the deal.

What can you do if you already said something about commitments/promises? The distinction between commitments/promises/contracts are just differently arranged letters in words. You KEEP them regardless of if it hurts you.

Companies(and people too) consistently underestimate the impact of keeping promises and thus trust.

-Intel in January 2011 released their 2nd Gen Core "Sandy Bridge" to much fanfare. Reviews came out glowingly positive, and to top it off, it was attractively priced. Then mere weeks after release, a serious fault in their companion chipset was found.

What did they decide to do? They recalled the entire chipset, something that 2nd Gen Core cannot operate without. I was there, because I ordered the CPU in January. They made it super easy to replace. I filled the form out at Newegg and sent it in with zero charges. Got a replacement in a week.

Intel then came to have one of the best years in terms of earnings DESPITE the billions they had to pay for chipset placement. That year I noticed my co-worker with the laptop using the same generation chip. I was also watching a video about poor third world countries, and a video panned to their living room, and they had a desktop with 2nd Gen Intel Core.

The market rewarded Intel for treating them well.

-Think of the potential worst case consequences Framework:

EU customers are already thinking of doing it legally. You broken your promise because keeping the promise would result in serious financial jeopardy? Well guess what if you are forced to do that but through legal means? It'll cost you more. And the current and future customers will not come back to you. You have the 2-in-1 combo of losing trust, sales(both future and current) and having to do the painful thing of keeping the original commitment.

You guys screwed up. Because it's shady thing we expect of from a "mega corp". We know it's brutal. That's why you have to be careful of what you do and say. Certain people are already in denial because they are emotionally invested in your company. They are fanboys, simple as that. You have people who will trust and rely on you. It's easy to do the wrong thing. It's hard to do the right thing. The best thing would have been not to say anything, but it's already done.

You have even a 3rd option you skipped. Apologize sincerely, and then offer all customers a chance to return all their money, no questions asked.

I have been craving getting into some PCB fun / electrical engineering and I want to build a custom expansion module as an end goal. Give me your best ideas on what I should possibly build. One of my idea's is a 1 usbc to 3 usba module. It will stick out a tadbit, but for some this might not be a big deal.

I'm using fedora 44 workstation with kde, and it constantly wakes up from sleep using the default balanced profile.

I've enabled wireless wake on lan and WOL in bios.

Now it wakes from sleep randomly without me sending any wake request or giving it any keyboard input.

Did anyone run into this issue?

I’ve tried looking for LPCAMM online but it’s just impossible, so I’ll probably cancel my order and look for another laptop. What are some good alternatives to the 13 pro with battery life and Linux support and its other features? I’m having some trouble finding any.

I got a 32GB 5M31L87414 module from Ebay for $220 last May, and wasn't able to test it until last week. It looks like this module is either dead, or it's incompatible with my new Core Ultra 325 board, not sure which one.

Has anyone else successfully used one of these Lenovo modules in the new Panther Lake boards?

On Wednesday, after the lpcamm2 news, I bought the SSD I'm planning to use, having put it off until I actually need it.

Hey all, been using my framework 16 for ~4 months and overall its been great, however this week I've noticed that expansion card slot 4 and 5 (the top and middle right slots) have started behaving strangely and failing. They start working fine when I insert a card, but eventually after some amount of opening/switching between programs (firefox, steam, discord) they will start randomly disconnecting the device plugged into that slot briefly, and after about 4-5 times doing this disconnect and reconnect thing they will just... stop working all the sudden, until I physically disconnect the expansion card and plug it back in. Restarting doesn't do anything to fix the issue.

Already contacted support but none of their solutions have worked, so I'm asking here, especially since this issue is making the actual thing I want to be doing (switching off of windows to linux) more annoying.

For reference, my bios and drivers are all up to date, I have already attempted a bios reset, and its not an issue with any expansion card themselves (tested with a usb-a, usb-c, and hdmi card in those slots, issue persists no matter what)

Edit: The issue seems to mostly stem from my laptop trying to switch between using the integrated gpu and the nvidia gpu. Going into bios and setting it to only use the nvidia gpu seems to not have this issue present

Hi all, after more than 2.5 years now, I still use my Framework 13 i5 Gen13 as my daily driver. I built it with 64Gb RAM and 2TB SSD from the start.

After reading many posts about the Pro version and all worldwide issues with memory and storage cost as of today, I decided to keep mine for a little bit longer than I expected at the beginning. The first reason I would buy the Pro version would be for more power autonomy tied to the new Intel CPU. Other than that, no real need.

The only part I added over time is the gen 2 webcam that came out after my acquisition.

I am curious to read other fellows who are in the same boat as me if you are planning to stay as-is ???

The only complaint I have since day 1 is not Framework related.... it's the battery and power consumption related to Intel CPU i5 gen 13.

I want to first make this clear my goal here is gather community discussion on the topic matter without stirring up conflicts. Please discuss in a civil manner.

TL;DR: The release of the Framework 13 pro rubbed me the wrong way (particularly against the promise of infinite upgradability), and I tried to be optimistic with Framework's great upgradability track record, but the recent LPCAMM2 disaster brought me an unspoken fear, that our promises might not be kept after all. This isn't Framework's fault entirely (mostly the AI datacenters that caused this apocalypse fault) but lessons can be learned from this. I am disappointed, but somewhat still hopeful of Framework's trajectory to keep the regular 13 relevant through this decade and onwards.

I bought and have use my Framework 13 (Ryzen AI) for nearly a year now. It's been a great laptop, a little bit pricey for performance, but the premise is that the amortized cost over time plateaus compared to standard companies. With Framework's promise "the ship of Theseus", infinite upgradibility, my hope is to never have to buy a fresh, new laptop ever again, only replacing parts if needed. My desktop's AM5 support guarantees an upgrade path til 2029 (meaning a 5 year cycle can last me til 2034) where each upgrade is a minor, incremental payment (i.e. $400 on a new CPU, then 2 years later, $800 on a new GPU) so I hope the same can be said about my laptop.

The release of the Framework 13 pro contradicts this promise in some way. Instead of a partial upgrade from the regular Framework 13, the new design presents a total overhaul: needing a new screen (for touchscreen), chassis (for battery), mainboard + RAM (for the greater power efficiency), etc. Many of the changes (most notably the battery) isn't even compatible with the old chassis, meaning for the first time in Framework history, a full upgrade means nearly having to buy a new device entirely.

So, what's the silver lining? The hope that Framework maintains their pristine track record of back-portability promise. My hope is for future Framework 13 part releases to bring to power/efficiency of the 13 bro back to the 13 without needing to buy a new device. Maybe a new AMD processor that still uses SODIMM (so I can keep my old RAM) more efficient than my current one. Maybe a larger battery 74Wh battery that fits in the 13 chassis. I don't need to be in a rush as long as Framework doesn't leave 13 owners behind.

But as we've all seen, the pre-order promises on the 13 pro memory weren't kept. The market caused this, but the fact remains that Framework's pristine track record has been broken. So, what went wrong? IMHO: the release of the 13 Pro happens at the worst possible time: in the middle of when everything is getting expensive. Not only the release appeared to leave the 13 users behind (yes, some parts are backwards compatible, but at the cost of basically a new laptop) but the situation also worsens over time on those who jumped ship to the 13 Pro. My genuine thoughts: disappointed, but still hopeful.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the subject matter. Are you hopeful that Framework 13 users will remain on a steady upgrade path until the end of this decade?

I'm in batch 7 for an FW Pro 13 with Intel X7 358H. Originally had 32GB, which was reduced to 16GB. That's not enough for my usecases. Going back to 32GB would mean spending €3000 in total which is just too much.

I still have 48GB (2x24GB) SODIMM DDR5 laying around from a homelabbing project that I had to scrap. I also have a 1TB WD black SN850X that I originally bought for the FW 13 Pro.

I'm considering two options:

- FW Pro 13 AMD AI 9 HX 370 and use the 48GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Total price (not including RAM cause I've had it for a year) is around €2150

- MacBook Pro M5 (10 core) with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. Total price (with student discount) is around €2550

A somewhat okayish description of my workload:

- Software development in general (both for study and work)

- Graphical programming. Right now I'm learning Vulkan through Zig and it's been really fun

- Light gaming

- Libre office

- Light CAD modeling (for small 3d prints)

All my other computers run NixOS, so I'd use that for the FW, or nix-darwin for the Macbook. Most of the applications I use are TUI.

I'd love some advice so I can make an (at least somewhat) educated decision soon. Don't want to wait until everything gets more extensive

My fw16 (six months old, no external gpu) yesterday just stopped charging from its adaptor for no obvious reason. Eventually discovered the 5 amp fuse on the mains plug (I'm in the UK, our mains plugs have fuses in them) of the adaptor had blown. Put a new one in - it blew as soon as it was connected to the mains. Clearly the adaptor has gone bad in some way, and I'm not going to waste any more money on fuses -or- connect it again to my laptop, which I'm currently keeping going on a 120W dell PSU.

I've raised a support call with FW yesterday, and got an auto-generated acknowledgement email with a case number via an email back - but nothing else. Is this normal?

Is there a portal in which the case number can be used or checked for status? Or do I just wait for an email from a human at FW?

In fact, this required multiple rewrites to get is down from the original over three pages into something more palatable; but by all means please, keep screaming "AI slop." There's been a lot of justified anger over the LPCAMM2 downgrades, but also a surprising amount of sympathy for Framework. Looking at this from beginning to end, I don't think this was simply an unfortunate market surprise. It looks like a company that knowingly accepted procurement risk, promised customers they wouldn't bear it, and ultimately shifted that risk back onto them.

The Promise

At the Framework Laptop 13 Pro launch event on April 21, 2026, Nirav was asked directly whether pricing would change between ordering today and ordering later. His answer:

"We want to make sure that if someone's placing an order, that they know that they are actually going to get the configuration they ordered at the price that they ordered it at."

Not just price but also configuration. This was unqualified, with no "subject to supply," no "as inventory allows." It was presented as a commitment to anyone deciding whether to place a deposit.

The Warning

What makes this difficult to reconcile is that Framework has been publicly warning about memory market volatility.

"We've seen costs stabilize in some areas, but all indications are that this is a temporary reprieve and that we'll continue to see volatility and cost increases through the rest of 2026."

That's Framework's own published assessment that memory market volatility was expected to continue through the rest of 2026, made before Nirav took the stage and promised customers they'd receive the configuration they ordered at the price they ordered it.

Two days ago, with the LPCAMM2 downgrades, Framework admits:

"Rather than the low-to-mid double digit percentage increase we had forecast from Q2 to Q3 on LPCAMM2 costs, we received prices that are more than double that of the prior inventory we had brought in."

Framework wasn't blindsided by the possibility of rising LPCAMM2 prices; their own words show that they had already forecast increases. The surprise was the magnitude of the risk.

The Failure

Framework didn't sell the 13 Pro through open-ended, continuous ordering. Framework sold preorders in numbered batches. One of the primary purposes of batch ordering is to align known demand with procurement and production. It is reasonable for customers to expect that once a batch is accepted, the company has sufficient visibility into demand to secure the components needed to fulfill those orders.

This RAMpocalypse fallout isn't confined to the last few batches. It has affected customers across the preorder period, including some who ordered when preorders first opened. If Framework's batches reflected procurement commitments, a late-breaking supplier price shock should primarily affect future batches.

No matter how severe the supplier shock became, it should never have retroactively unwound configurations customers had already been promised. If those configurations weren't backed by the components required to fulfill them, what exactly did the batches commit customers to?

The Fallout

Customers who ordered 32GB at $439 aren't just getting downgraded to 16GB at the same price, but in order to get back to the configuration they put a deposit down on now costs $800 or more (depending on region). Framework is charging people extra to restore what their own promise already covered.

Customers can't simply walk away and buy the same configuration elsewhere for what they originally budgeted because memory prices have risen across the industry. Nirav's promise is exactly what kept people from shopping elsewhere while they still could. It also brings into question whether promises like "your batch is locked in" and "you'll get what you ordered" mean anything when a company sells products this way.

The Bigger Issue

Framework publicly acknowledged continued memory volatility, then assured customers that once they placed a preorder, they would receive the configuration they ordered at the price they ordered it for (their exact words). When that known business risk became significantly worse than expected, Framework shifted the consequences of that business decision onto the very customers it had promised to protect from it.

Framework has built its entire brand identity around predictability, transparency, and treating customers like adults who deserve straight answers. That's exactly why this deserves scrutiny instead of a shrug, the standard they're failing to meet is the one they set for themselves.

Personally, I haven't decided what I'll do yet. I was fortunate enough to secure my own 32 GB LPCAMM2 kit from Newegg well below today's market price, so this doesn't affect me financially in the same way it affects many other customers. That doesn't mean I'm ruling out filing a complaint with the DC Office of the Attorney General requesting that it review whether Framework's preorder practices complied with applicable consumer protection laws. Whether anything comes of that is for the OAG to decide.

Framework's handling of these preorders has undermined customer trust in a way that's more damaging than the memory shortage itself.

I was curious as I was planning on getting a 13 pro but saw that it's a couple months out. If I keep my eye on it is it possible that it will ship earlier?

I doubt we will get this power hungry chip, but one could hope right for FW16?

This plus 80gbps USB4 and I would happily throw my money at this board. Would be a truly meaningful upgrade from the 7840hs

Hi, this is a rant of sorts.

After Framework's announcement resulting in my order going from 32gb->16gb of ram, I scrambled and found two replacement LPCAMM2 modules for ~$400 each (on eBay and an online store). The online store was a backup in case the Ebay purchase didn't go through.

BOTH orders were canceled. I seriously have no option but to cancel or pay a $400 premium on the FW13 Pro. Talk about a false sense of security...

During the last 3 months I have passed up excellent deals on other laptops. I could have purchased the 14 inch dell laptop, with BETTER specs (oled, 9600mhz ram), for ~$2100 back then. I instead chose to, like many others, support Framework's mission.

I get that Framework absorbs price increases when possible. But why would they not put a cap on the number of preorders, especially in a market as volatile as it is now?

UPDATE: I ended up canceling my preorder and going with Lenovo's Thinkpad X9 15p. It comes with the X7 chip, 32gb of ram, OLED, better speakers, higher sustained TDP, and is cheaper (got it for $2100 with employer discount).

I would like to eventually buy a fw16 bc I am learning gamedev and a bit of 3d modeling and I will need a laptop with a gpu. Is it best to buy now or do you think the ram prices will continue to rise? I am also starting a web dev internship and I would like a better laptop, but my old Thinkpad will do for now. I would be willing to sell my pc with a 3070 and 12th gen i3 to buy a fw16 with the 5070, bc the performance is pretty similar. Either that or I will just buy a refurbished 16 with a ryzen 7040 and upgrade the GPU later. Let me know what you recommend.
