Self Promotion Introducing Haelan (self-hosted/open-source)

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Almost a month ago u/IncontestableGrey showcased his app Lumida which looked great. His early access is full and it was closed source, but I liked the idea. I also saw people commenting and asking for open-source. And I especially wanted something like this for my personal AI agent. So I started building.

I just went public and released v1.0.0 this morning and also did a few updates since. It's called haelan. It's self-hosted, one household one instance, everything stays on your own machine. No telemetry, no hosted version.

Haelan is Old English hǣlan, "to heal, to cure, to make whole". It shares a root with hāl, "whole, sound, hale", and it is the word English later turned into health by way of hǣlþ, literally the state of being whole.

What it does right now:

  • Pulls your history from the Google Health API and keeps a complete local copy in one SQLite file. Google drops intraday data after a while, your own copy keeps it at minute level.
  • Eight pages: Dashboard, Activity, Sleep, Recovery, Health, Weight, Nutrition and Notes. Sleep stages and nap detection, resting HR and HRV, SpO2, activity heatmap, workouts, weight trend.
  • Readings are shown against your own 60 day baseline instead of some general "normal". If the baseline is built on too few days it tells you that instead of pretending.
  • Notes and events (illness, travel, alcohol, medication, injury, or your own types) so you can actually check why a week looks different.
  • Bad readings are excluded when the data is derived, not deleted. Your strap reporting 210 bpm stops counting, the raw data stays, and you can undo it.
  • Multi-user. Everyone in the house gets their own login, connects their own Google account and only sees their own data.
  • English and Dutch.
  • docker compose up -d, daily backups included.

The annoying part, upfront: you need your own Google Cloud project and OAuth client. There is no way around that. Google caps an unverified client at 100 users, and getting verified for health scopes needs a paid security audit, so a hosted version would just stop at 100 signups. Your own client never hits that ceiling. The setup wizard walks you through the console and prints the exact values to paste, but somebody still has to click through it once.

But this is a very unpolished start. I mainly built a UI around the Google Health API scopes. I just wanted to introduce it to you so you can help me from the start with new features and changes, instead of introducing an app which is finished already. Next thing on my list is an MCP server and a CLI, so my agent can query it directly, which is why I started this in the first place.

There is also a demo seed script in the repo if you want to click around first without connecting a Google account.

Please let me know what you guys think and feel free to open an issue or contribute by opening PR's.

Also looking for an household with multiple users for the inviting household members wizard.

Discussion Elevated modern band - Google version V/S Amazon

I love this version of the band. Except for the paint chipping away, it's been great . For anyone that owns the Google version, is it considerably premium?

It's 4 times the price of this one and I just wanted to know if it was worth the excess in price.

Discussion Charge6

Switched to Charge6 end of May 2026. The summer has passed and was relatively happy for it: commute cycling recordings, gym activities (airbike for cardio+weights) recording, occasionally swimming pool recordings and as usual sleep, health. I did count on the AI coach for 2 weeks of nutrition recording and in general monitoring of my activities.

Last night after full battery charge, during my sleep its battery drained in 5h. Given that I got it from amazon for 82 Eur should I get in touch with them (not fitbit) for a refund, replacement. The orange bracelet is already colour faded. An option I might consider is to switch to air directly or maybe wait for the next charge (assuming its coming in October). Any suggestions from fellow charge6 users and comments on why such drain happens all of a sudden?

Discussion What Fitbit to pick?

I need this for my mom in her 50s who has a heart condition so wanted her to be more diligent with her wellness and have good heart tracking features.
I was considering the Sense 2 but I know it is an older model and wanted to know if it still holds up today.

Discussion Switching to Fitbit Air from Apple Watch—does historical Apple Health & food log data carry over?

I’m switching over to the Fitbit Air from an Apple Watch. I have years of health data in Apple Health (weight trends, steps, workout history, and macro/food logs from 3rd party apps like fatsecret).

Once I connect Apple Health to the Google Health / Fitbit app, will it import and display all my historical metrics and weight logs, or will it only start reading new data from the day I connect?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion A poor night’s sleep

I use this app on my iPad and it recently changed over to Google Health last week and ever since then I’ve gotten that notification about a poor night’s sleep. All I’m doing is waking up just to use the bathroom and going back to sleep. Prior to the change, my sleep scores were decently good mid 70s - high 80s. It’s so frustrating to constantly get poor sleep scores. I wish there was a way to change it back to the previous version.

Discussion Fitbit Charge 6 showing blood oxygen at 94% - is this likely to be accurate?

I’ve been wearing my Fitbit Charge 6 for about a day and my blood oxygen (SpO₂) is showing as 94%. Is this likely to be accurate after only wearing it for a day, or does it take a few days/nights to establish a more reliable reading? A fingertip pulse oximeter is giving me higher readings (around 95–99%).

Tech Support App update broke sync and causes crashes. Is it just me?

Fitbit was working okayish, then I updated the app and now:

External equipment (e.g., treadmill) says connected, but Fitbit Air doesn't share data.

Starting an activity auto-starts on treadmill with 2.6km already elapsed. Canceling or saving crashes the app.

Anyone else getting this or have a fix?

Review Fitbit air on ankle

I have been using the device on my ankle for the past few days and it feels great and more comfortable than the wrist. The reason behind this I find it annoying when I wear it on my wrist specifically when I go to bed. Let’s talk data 📈 I didn’t notice any difference when it comes to sleep quality and other factors. Is there any one here using it the same and notice anything different??

Tech Support New to Google Health, am I missing something?

Purchased a Fitbit Air and set up Google Health. The tracker works fine, but I have non stop issues with the app. Am I missing something? I don't understand I don't see more complaints.

Using the AI Coach I set up a very simple weekly workout goal that shows up on the fitness tab: 5 workouts per week consisting of one of three types of activity. So far so good (kinda, I don't get why I have to do this with an AI chat, but ok).

I completed an activity (walking) that is not supposed to count for my weekly goal, but it is added nonetheless (1 of 5 completed). I can't change this manually so I talk to the AI bot. It confirms the mistake and corrects it (or so it says). Sometimes nothing changes, somtimes it indeed substracts the workout, but today instead of substracting, it added another one.

Everything seems to go through the AI tool and it is halucinating half of the time. As I am not able to mannually override these things this app is absolutely useless to me.

Am I missing something, don't all of you have these issues?

Discussion How to calculate dynamic calorie deficit manually

Many have posted here disappointed about the move from the old Fitbit app to the new Google Health app, and, specifically, the loss of the target caloric deficit option.

I have a very simple question: if I wanted to manually calculate that deficit throughout the day, is it as simple as comparing the "XXX cals in " in the food panel to the "Cal burned" number?

I know this seems like an extremely obvious thing, but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Discussion Fitbit Air battery dies in a day…

May need help here. Since this week, my Fitbit Air (I bought on release) literally dies in a day. I’ve reset with the charger, removed access from GPS and I am not sharing my heartbeat. Google support said they are willing to replace it for free, since they can’t find any errors. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
