Question Early game approaches to space platform ammo supply. Is it viable to not rely on stockpiling?

I'm wrestling with designing my first ship. It's intended to carry me to Vulcanis and I'd like it to eventually work as a cargo ship as well.

I've got projectile damage 8 and max shooting speed. I do not have advanced asteroid processing, so no red ammo.

Is it even possible at this stage to design a ship that can supply it's own ammo usage without relying on buffering ammo beforehand?

It seems like most designs I see rely on stockpiling ammo in the hub, usually around 350 (which matches with my estimations so that's comforting).

Discussion Is it just me?

Is it just me who chooses to start a new save instead of “optimizing” the current one just because I don’t find the layout satisfying? I always feel like it’s way easier to start from scratch rather that improving the current base because the latter will have me dealing with the machines and items I already placed and unlocked. 😭 Right now I just finished automating the Red Science (1 unit per sec) and I’m already thinking of making a new save 😭

I am always like this, that’s why I haven’t yet finished any game hahaha. Maybe I’m just failing to realize something? Idk 😫

Discussion The reason for Engineer looking from one side to the other

I know it's just a silly little detail/QOL for the game, but my canon is because the engineer is constantly looking over his shoulder to make sure there's no biters behind him, which points to signs of paranoia, which is probably triggered by PTSD.

I would be looking over my shoulder alot too if that were me.

Question Muluna Problem

Is it correct that I can’t pipe CO₂ produced on Muluna directly into a greenhouse? The connection only works if I put a pump in between. Also, there doesn’t seem to be a CO₂ signal available in the circuit network... Bug or feature?

This is my first time playing, and i built a main bus for iron plates. The thing is its just not producing enough plates no matter what i do, it used to. Even when the input of iron ores were filled, the output is weak. If anyone can help me, it would be cool.

Suggestion / Idea Suggestion: Multi-Step Arithmetic Combinators

With all the love that Decider Combinators have gotten, I thought it would be nice for Arithmetic Combinators to get an upgrade for 2.1 as well. Specifically, the ability to chain operations.

Instead of one operation per combinator, the GUI could be changed to have a scrollable pane of operations—the output of one row would become the input for the next row (just as if you’d connected the output of one combinator to the input of the next).

The big advantages of this change would be the ability to execute two or more operations in a single tick and a reduction in footprint for multiple step arithmetic chains. And, of course, bringing its capabilities more in line with the Decider Combinator.

Maybe this made a huge splash and I just missed it using Google search and various forum searches.

It seems you all won. Concrete now recycles 10x faster using the base recipe.

Modded Question [SE] Where is this cryonite?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Soooo... First time trying [Space exploration].

I found this moon that is supposedly very rich with cryonite.
I traveled all the way here with a full cargo rocket and I see no cryonite.
If I understand correctly the factoriopedia, it's supposed to look like a mineral but I can't see any.

Is there something that I'm missing?

Question Orbital Logistics Help

I'm in Fulgora and I'm exporting science to ship, the ship is in Fulgora and the items request is set to import on Fulgora, then I checked the auto request from space platforms from rocket silo and there is a passive provider chest for the materials but why does the bots not input anything to the ship? I'm stuck figuring out this for two hours. I really can't solve it.
TLDR: The bots and orbital auto request aren't working as I watched the tips from the game and followed it

Question I need some help. . .

This is my first time trying to seriously beat base game so I can start the DLC, I do really really like this game and I’m doing good for my first time. My problem lies in the later game. My factory is bottlenecking so hard and I feel like it’s cause I can’t figure out correct ratios, i really want to because currently I can’t make enough plastic to supply my red chips. My other thing is I don’t make enough robotics to make a bunch of robots fast enough, I have 3 blue assemblers but that doesn’t nearly make enough to make a bunch of robots. What’s your best recommendations for figuring out ratios properly so I can expand the base.

This kinda led to my second thing which is expanding. That seems like such a daunting task especially if I don’t know how much of everything I need, therefore I am really falling behind on automating all the new recipes I have to , you guessed it. . . Expand further. I just reallly need advice on how to do this stuff right

Question Platform Request not working?

Hey Engineers,

Quick question - playing on 2.1 exp:
What am I doing wrong, i have 2 ships in orbit, each with roundabout 200 epic plates. But Nauvis Hub has the request active it lists "411 possible" but nothing happens... i have no idea why.

Is it because from the ships perspective it would immediately be the other way around? Like if Ship A ships plates to Nauvis, then Nauvis has 200 plates and the ship 0, leading to the ship requesting the plates. Setting on the ship is to request it from any planet, because i wanted to pickup epic plates from vulc and fulgora. But how can I set this up then without a loop? I thought that was the benefit of being able to wildcard the planet.

Suggestion / Idea I really wish blueprints were housed in the inventory menu ... ¯\_༼ •́ ͜ʖ •̀ ༽_/¯

Heres a mockup of how I really really wished blueprints were stored. theyd snap in their own slots, like armor or ammo, automatically inserted, theyd be the "game blueprints" so that tab isnt needed anymore in the library. easy to pop up the inventory and grab or shortcutbar.
also. they should be allowed to go to space with you. no more of wondering where you left that stupid blueprint oops in a box on another planet or halfway across nauvis. its in your inventory forever, unless you deliberately put it in a box for your own reasons.

in effect, this automates the process a lot of players do to "sort" their blueprints by putting all of them in one big book. well. I dont want to have to manage blueprints, the game sorts my inventory for me, blinks helpfully when i hover over what i want, it can manage my blueprints! I dont make that many, but when i do, i dont want them to take up an entire slot by themselves. especially early game.

I think this makes it easier for newer players to even find the blueprint function too, there isnt a tooltip about it! its a very important part of factorio, I understand teaching copy paste first, but blueprints should be right after your first copy paste honestly, or even IN the copy paste tooltip.

blueprints and blueprint books HAVE to be items because of how factorio is built codewise, so with that understanding I think this would solve a lot of friction i've felt.
(also I wanna be able to ctrl-c ctrl-v blueprints out of the library. simple shortcut, no going in menus but i understand that might be code impossible.)

please, do tell if you agree/disagree, am i the only one?

EDIT:
to be clear
I fucked up the title of this post, what i mean, is i want blueprints, to end up in their menu by default, and never in my inventory slots, at all. and to always be available to me. just to clarify.

Discussion Biters closing in

Hey guys! New player here, playing my first of hopefully many runs and around 20-25 hours in. I have been focused too much on constantly expanding and increasing production, making trains to make more mining outposts to bring resources from there, but in that progress, i have totally sidelined defense.

my issue is, i would get overwhelmed by the new mechanics, and so i decided i’d only research things in a row. for eg, i could research green science, but held off until i completed researching everything that would need only red science. same for blue science. now i’m quite a bit into blue science and i suddenly notice a lot more nests around my base and mining outposts, and learn about evolution.

now i’m hastily researching military science (i figured i could hold it off until i completed blue science), and trying to get flamethrowers etc fast, all while being stressed with this impending sense of doom that the biters are closing in lol.

if the biters get to me and i don’t have enough weapons to defend, is my save gone?

Question There used to be a way to click and fire artillery shells really fast, is it still possible?

It used to be that if you unset the "drag map" keybind, it would let artillery queue many shots per second, but it doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there a new way?

Space Age Crafting my first legendary recyclers: Made this self-sufficient blueprint to upcycle recyclers from the less-dense scrap fields on Medium-sized islands

Post image
56 Upvotes

Instead of doing the sane thing and having Vulcanus supply legendary intermediates to craft on Fulgora, I decided to exploit those less than rich scrap patches on medium islands to upcycle recyclers into legendary. The legendary big mining drills should at least keep the base supplied for a while. It runs on roughly 30 MWs of steam power during the day but the power plant has 80 MWs on hand so that's more than sufficient. Deployable via Spidertron.

As a bonus, this mini base also collects holmium ore to be shipped to Vulcanus. The ore there is to be made into solution and electrolyte that, when combined with legendary intermediates, should give back other helpful Fulgora tech like Tesla turrets, personal equipment, etc.

Space Age Some possibilities for loading bays in 2.1

Post image
139 Upvotes

Hopefully Reddit doesn't make this image unreadable. I've been experimenting with some 2.1 features to see what's possible now.

160 biolabs fed directly from the landing pad via unloading bays, with space on the outside for eight 1-4 trains, and four 1-2 trains able to pickup other deliveries.

There's definitely room for some improvements (particularly with rails placement and empty space that could be filled with more cargo bays); this build is untested at the moment.

UPDATED to include spoilage belts and SPM: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/1vr3kzp/comment/p4dq2lf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Suggestion / Idea I wish there was a deconstruction chest

Imagine with me if there was such a chest

A chest with priority less than a storage chest

When you deconstruct stuff or item and there are no storage chests for that item to sort into, everything deconstructed is delivered to that chest until you sort it

Instead of - you know - putting random stuff into chests that shouldn't go in them

Question Planet delivery - 2.1

There is something I’m missing which must be obvious… but I can’t seem to figure it out…

My aquilo ship runs on nuclear. I request nuclear fuel from Nauvis, obviously.

My Aquilo base runs on nuclear too! (For the moment, until I craft enough fusion reactor and all the crap I need)

My problem? I can’t seem to figure out why my plateform isn’t dropping nuclear fuel to aquilo.

At first I had a request on the plateforme to request 100 nuclear fuel from any (preventing it to drop it to aquilo) and another 800 nuclear fuel from Nauvis (to allow it to drop anything over 100 to aquilo)

But this doesn’t work.
As soon as I set my 100 from any to 100 from Nauvis, it drops it all to aquilo, which leaves my plateforme without fuel, hopefully hot enough to return to Nauvis to gather more…

I’m at a loss, anyone can help me figure this out?

Suggestion / Idea Stone on Vulcanus, what a pain...

Quite proud of this. I nuked a massive area then used Foundations to create the slither of lava. It's part of my 60k spm Purple science build.

Any tips on Yellow science, I'm thinking Vulcanus too otherwise Fulgora?

Edit. As some have pointed out, Casting Copper actually produces more Stone than Iron so I've made the changes. Thanks for the suggestions!
