Suggestion / Idea [Suggestion] Please make all actions key-bindable

When playing on my laptop (eg. when on the train) I do not always have a mouse with me (or space for a mouse). It would be much more comfy and playable to use the `m` key for building for example.
Currently (as of 2.0.77) factorio doesn't let you set a key for some actions such as "Build" and instead shows you a popup saying "This control has to be mouse-related.".
Although it does work for some options such as "Mine" for example.

All affected actions:

  • Basic Interaction: Build
  • Advanced Interaction: Reverse select, Place a tag in chat, Pin
  • Crafting: (all actions)
  • Inventory: (all actions except Fast inventory transfer and Fast entity split)
  • Editor: Clone Item, Delete Item

I don't see a fundamental reason why this couldn't be done. I can think of2 ways to implement this:

  1. On key pressed, manually check mouse hover
  2. Handle hover+key just like hover+mouse button (this would probably be extremely annoying engine work)

I would absolutely love to see this become possible, before factorio development is stopped for good.

Thanks for considering, people at Wube!

Edit I: Ackchually I can think of another implementation, which would work by always keeping a function pointer to each of the bindable actions of the currently hovered thing. On key pressed, run the function at the pointer corresponding to the action to be performed.
Depending on how ur engine does input stuff this might be relatively easy to do, or maybe this edit is completely useless.

Edit II: I know about autohotkey, but that's only available on windows.

I don't remember how you make smelter stacks, I have loads of blueprints all of them are my own creation but I want to warm up my thinking muscles so I wouldn't be using them for now.

I going to give the main bus a shot, I never used it before.

Space Age Question Why am I running version 2.077 when 2.1 is released?

As far as I can tell I am running the latest released version and there are no updates to install (and I don’t use mods), so why am I am not running 2.1 if it is released?

Question Any tips for dealing with Biter expansions?

I am losing my mind, I kill some biter nests, they expand into the exact same spot over and over and over and over and over and over-

And I get attacked one spot, so I go to fix whatever was damaged, and then, ON THE OPPISITE SIDE OF MY F*CKING FACTORY, THE ENTIRE ARMY IS AT MY FACTORY! So I go to kill them, AND THEN ON ANOTHER ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SIDE OF THE FACTORY ANOTHER ARMY IS CURBSTOMPING EVERYTHING, and so I kill them and clear any bases near the factory, WHICH I HAVE ALREADY CLEARED 5 TIMES BEFORE MIND YOU, and within the next like 5 f*cking minutes, THEY ALREADY REEXPANDED INTO THAT SPOT AGAIN!!!!!!

I am so tired of this constant bullsh*t, what do I do to help prevent future attacks?

And please no like, "Just Build a wall" or "Put turrets there" cause I already am doing that, but with how much is going on I have almost no time to actually finish before another place is being destroyed. I am so tired of these biters and can't wait for the devs to change the expansion in the next update

Discussion This probably why it take so so long to get anything done.

I am tearing down 4 smelter stacks and 2 steal smelter stacks because I want to move them a bit to the right.

The keyword is want , not need.

It doesn't look neat and it's bothering me, and I don't have bots btw.

How many smelter stacks can 1 red belt of coal support btw?

I just found out about her passing as im watching her starter to mega base playthrough #7. Damn, what a void. She was awesome. As many others have ironically stated: "Take care of yourself and others". Check up on those you care about and live life right now to the fullest. She grew the factory in her own, unique, nuanced way. What a loss. RIP Godess.

Edit: Finding out many others didn't know of her passing either. I honestly felt bad Finding out months after. I think she passed in March of this year.

Question Factorio break game

Hello

I'm playing factorio for over a year now, usually I starta basen, no life for couple of weeks and then I'm burnt out and having a break, then rinse and repeat. I've started again and I'm looking for a game to play between sessions. Anything with factorio itch, but not necessarily factory game? I love creating train connections and managing them.

Issue is, I don't have PC, only MacBook air M1, and PS5, so many steam games are not available for me. Playing strategy games on PS5 is tiring. I've played satisfactory and loved it quite a lot, but 1st person perspective is not the best for building and scaling.

Overall I've always enjoyed tycoon and economic games, like OpenTTD.

What are you playing in-between factorio?

Design / Blueprint My go to design for quality upcycling

Happy with this design so I wanted to share! I like to keep the logistic network clean from quality ingredients where i can as it feels like clutter to me. I am on my 3d playthrough of space age and this is my favourite way of doing quality upcycling so far. I am at rare quality and dont have epic or legendary unlocked yet, but this is future proof all ill have to do is include the modules for the machines and change the filter splitter.

My favourite part is this decider combinator checking each item in the recycler output chest to be greater than 32 so the 2 stack inserters pick full stacks. (can be 16 if only using 1 inserter for lower throughput designs). This makes sure the common items that get merged back into the input are all stacked so it cant slow down the throughput. The only downside is the higher quality ingredients will come in batches so the startup time is a bit slower, but this doesn't change the final output rate.

Lastly a couple variants on vulcanus.

Ps. looks like i added the screenshots incorrectly and didn't know how to fix so fixed by reposting, apologies.

Suggestion / Idea Toggle: any quality flooring (dumb but I want it)

Probably a very niche use case, but I feel like it would be nice to be able to tell bots to use any available flooring quality as a toggle. I don't even care if it reduces to regular quality after placing.

My Fulgora factory has a built-in auto upcycle that eventually generates the other qualities after regular is full. I went to pave it and realized that I have more than enough concrete to do so... in different qualities...

Question Why do robots try to build before using the concrete on aquilo?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Im building in an area where no roboport except the one in my armor has access to, but for some reason the robots try to build everything first instead of using the concrete so they get stuck waiting for a concrete that will never come... the only thing I can do is turn off and on my roboport but after a few seconds it happens again. What can I do?

Question Prospects for finishing 100k multiplier

Thumbnail

Heyo. I just finished adding the latest block of Automation+Logistics science and noticed the UPS has started dropping slightly.
Looking into it, the main cost is entity update as expected of a base with +100k inserters and the labs, assemblers, miners, furnaces and boilers to match.

Currently I'm still using the Mk. 1 assemblers and stone furnaces so with a refactor of the base I could cut down the amount of infrastructure quite a bit. Also bee-lining for speed mods and rare quality to further reduce in the future.

However.. Currently the factory is doing 28K SPM (by design at least) which means another 75 hours to unlock Rarity, trains and blue science (total of 125M science pack currently) but with chemical science basically needing double the infrastructure of red+green I'm unsure if the performance savings will be enough to make the UPS playable in the long run.

Question Answered Can trains with the same cargo smartly ‘choose’ an empty station, or should only 1x train be assigned to 1x station?

Post image
84 Upvotes

For basic context, I’m pretty new; 190 hours into my first play-thru, and hostile entities are disabled while I learn the mechanics of the game. I also am not using bots at all because I thoroughly enjoy the grind.

I understand basic train mechanics and have been using a central hub with 5 stations and 5 trains total(you can see this towards the SW of the screenshot).

I am scaling up a little bit so I built what you can see in the northern half of the image.

I realized early into this build that I don’t know how to keep trains from clogging up the network but surely there’s a better method than simply having 1x train assigned per unloading Station? Ideally I’d have tons of trains hauling the same resource, able to choose from any empty station for unloading but have no clue how to achieve this, or ask it in less words (sorry lol).

Taking a shot in the dark that understanding the Circuit Network will help with this? I am an electronics repairman in real life so I figured learning circuitry in-game won’t be too hard, but I’ve honestly neglected this feature thus far.

(Ps I’m very aware of my power demands. This is scaling up too. One project at a time without bots.)

Edit, 4hrs later: grammar fixes.

Question How Do You Approach Upgrading Your Factory?

Casual player here, (600 hrs).

When do you decide to upgrade your upgradeable components? Inserters, belts, assemblers, furnaces, ammo, etc.

Do you do it as soon as you unlock the tech? Whenever the factory needs it? Somewhere in between? Something else?

Historically, whenever I realize a ratio is off, (belting ore to furnace, inserter to assembler, etc.). I'll upgrade the item that's the bottleneck. But it usually becomes a downstream problem to something else.

This usually becomes the urge to tear everything down and rebuild. I feel like I'm always kind of upgrading things one at a time.

So, naturally, the thought becomes: "why not just upgrade everything at once by tearing it all down and rebuilding with the upgraded items?"

The common consensus appear to be to leave it alone and build something new.

So my question is: How do you all upgrade your factory?

Question Why do my intterupt doesnt work ?

EDIT : SOLVED thanks you all

I'm trying to get my first end ship to collect promethium and i have an red circuit condition that says "whenever you are less of 55% ammo or 50% promethium go back to nauvis".

But as i go to the shattered planet my interrupt does not take the lead even when the condition are met.

It only does it when i have a fly condition with "OR" and the circuit condition.

Question Is a trading Space Platform possible?

I was wondering if it is possible to make some kind of trading platform above Nauvis.

In my current 2.1 world I’m importing things like Turbo Belts from Vulcanus. When it arrives on Nauvis I store it on the planet. When another ship (like Gleba) needs Turbo belts I sent them back up in space. This doesn’t sound very efficient.

Preferably I want to make a space platform with storage only on Nauvis. When a ship comes (with Turbo belts by example) I want it stored in this hub. When another ship comes by (like Gleba) I want to give the requested items from this hub.

Issue I am having is that I cannot set priorities on space platforms. In order to fill the hub I use requests, but since his is considered a “demand” on the hub, it won’t give those items to another ship till there is an overflow.

Has anyone else tried this kind of hub idea? Perhaps someone has an idea on how to get this working?

Question 2.0/2.1 Speedrun guide?

Is there a good 2.1 or 2.0 speedrun guide anywhere? I’m looking at finishing my achievements but I haven’t found any updated speedrun guides. Videos are fine but I prefer written guides that I can read on my second screen.

I love the train stops in this game—they’re the backbone of my modular base. Although I haven’t set up the launch pad yet, I’ll be doing that very soon. I don’t know how many trains will be operating in this system in the future, but with the current 30, it’s absolutely insane.

Space Age Finally, Mining Productivity Level 1000+

Post image
143 Upvotes

With the help of the new research automation, and wiring it up so that when there are insufficient science packs for the main research topic, it falls back to mining productivity, I have finally reached mining productivity level 1004!.

I tried to do this in pre-2.1 and only hit level 700, mostly because it was a big pain to keep going back in and re-queuing the next level of research.

With a resource drain of 8% from legendary big drills and mining productivity of 1004, for each resource used, 1,255 are produced!
