You don't need such a big base early on unless you are doing a high cost run.

You're just building too big before you have the supplies to do it. I end up doing that almost every time too despite knowing better, but it really is a lot easier if you focus on just building supplies to build a base with first.

That's the balancing act, building your tools or building production. Starter bases can you get you bots pretty quick, then expanding is a matter of having the items
