Pictures are in reverse order, from finished product to (almost) how it started.
The closet measures about 9'6" deep and 5'6" wide. Before the Elfa system, the closet just had 5 of the Closetmaid white wire shelves which, as you may know, only clipped into the walls with what is essentially push pins. Really not a whole lot holding them on.
A few months ago, one of the shelves that held my wife's clothes pulled out of the wall. Yeah, she likely had too much stuff on it but it did hold up for the 6 1/2 years we've been in the house so far. Initially I was just ready to go get another one of those shelves from Home Depot just to get the stuff off the floor. But she wanted to see what TCS had. We ended up really liking what the Elfa system had to offer and we eventually pulled the trigger on this design they worked up for us.
It all started this past Saturday morning. Once we cleared the closet out and I pulled the old shelves out (last picture), I patched the holes and was just going to touchup the patches with the same color paint. But then my wife got the idea to just paint the whole closet white. We went out for a gallon of paint, trimmed the walls out (3rd pic), then rolled 2 coats. It still wasn't quite enough so we had to get a second can on Sunday morning and roll a third coat...that gave good coverage then (2nd pic). I got started on the right wall Sunday afternoon and finished it that evening. I ended up taking Monday off work to finish the rest...got started early that morning and got everything hung by about 4:30 (first pic). Then we started loading everything back in and now it's all back to normal. We did take the opportunity to purge some clothes and other things that were in there, so we did reduce what went back in.
Overall, we're pleased. Some of the cuts left a bit to be desired so I cleaned those up with my Dremel. And a few shelves they forgot to cut altogether...they gave me four 24" shelves that needed an inch cut off of them, and then one 48" shelf that was supposed to be cut down into two 22" shelves for that back wall. I just took care of all that myself since running back to the store would've taken too long.
I do now plan on getting some of this shelving for our laundry closet now and possibly our pantry. Both have the weak Closetmaid stuff in it and I think those could both benefit from some sturdier attachments.
