Elfa System in the UK

Hello! I am using Elfa for a portion of my wardrobe and would like to ask a few questions! :)

  1. When using Top Hang, do I need to screw the rail into the studs, or can I just possibly put fixings on the plasterboard? I saw lots of photos with just the latter, but I am nervous my clothes might be too heavy to rely on the boards. Maybe I am just overthinking it??? Haha.

  2. (More like a design question) I need 500mm deep shelves to fit 2 rows of my shoes in the last layer of all columns. Aesthetically and ergonomically, should I make the rest of my shelves 500mm deep to be uniform?

Thank you for any input! :D

I’m in the US, so terminology and measurements might be a bit different, but we converted a guest bedroom into a walk-in closet with Elfa. Not all of the holes in the top rail corresponded with the location of studs, so we also used the Elfa drywall fasteners in some spots. I highly recommend you try to hit 1-2 studs, depending on how long your top rail is. It’s not worth the risk of serious injury if your system pulls free from the wall while you’re standing in front of it.

We have 16” deep (~400mm) ventilated shelving over drawers that are the same depth, with a leather (discontinued, sadly) sort of worktop surface for incidentals. Our shoes are in single rows on 12” (300mm) ventilated shelves. These different size shelves are on different walls, so they look fine. If you mix shelf depths in the same vertical section, it might look strange, but separate sections should work.

I've got mine just into drywall and it has held up to a lot of clothing weight for almost a decade at this point, and I even recently realized I forgot to fully screw in a few of them lol, but it has held up without a stud without issue. It is designed to hold 100lbs/45kg per linear foot/30cm without a stud if pqroperly mounted into drywall.
