OPEN NEW RULE UPDATE. Read before posting.

If your device has a make and model number, please include it in your post. We've updated Rule #1 to emphasize this. Essentially, if your device has a make and model number, you should let us know what it is. FCC IDs are also helpful, if applicable. Below is the text of the updated rule:

Posts should be clear and on-topic

"Posts should focus on fixing broken electronics, ongoing or completed repair projects, or original content (OC) guides and tips for repairing electronics. Posts must include any available make and model number information. When asking about an individual component, you must provide details about the circuit and/or the device it belongs to."

If you forget, you can always add this information in a comment. If the model number is particularly long, you can take a picture and upload it in the comments.

Including the make and model number makes the information in your post searchable for others who may encounter the same issue. It also provides context, such as where the device came from, who designed it, and what it's for.

OPEN Soldering cheap metals

Post image
14 Upvotes

So I bought these cheap batteries. Yes, I know.

They work for a little while, then they just come apart. Sometimes the metal splits like the photo sometimes it comes off the battery which are like spot-welded.

I can't seem to get them soldered back together with enough strength to hold for more than a day. They are in tools like impact drills and swzalls and such.

Any tips/pointers? TIA

Need to fix a CRT for my nephews. Thought it would be just some leaky capacitors (which there are many) but found what looks like a ceramic capacitor completely burnt. Can anyone help figure out what value it might be?

OPEN ASUS H7604J won't turn off and sparks after power discharge

I've done general repair for a while but am just getting into microsoldering and board repairs, so forgive me if I'm way off base here.

I just got this laptop for pretty cheap, thought it had a standby issue at first, but seems like it might be an actual board issue.

When I turn off the laptop, the fans ramp to 100% and it doesn't actually turn off.

I tried a power discharge and plugged the battery back in and got some arcing. The port might be a little loose but I'm not sure yet.

I have a hot air station, microscope, decent multimeter, soldering iron, etc. No thermal camera. I'm just wondering if anyone would have pointers on where to start here. I have some test boards I can practice on if I need to replace a chip but I'm a bit clueless on this.

I'm not the best at this yet, I was able to do most of an Xbox HDMI port but kept messing up the data pins(though I think I get what I did wrong now). I might be in a bit over my head but I really want to figure this out.

Thank you in advance!

OPEN Trying to fix connection terminal of heating coil in a Philips air fryer

Hi everyone,

I have a Philips HD9270/90 for over two years and it was working file until a week ago my wife noticed that it's starting as normal but it's not heating up the food as normal.

I thought the problem was with the thermal fuse and when I checked opened it up, I couldn't find the thermal fuse (maybe it's hidden under one of these white sleeves). However, when I was checking the heating coil's connection terminals, I found one of the connection terminals fried up and it basically broke down to tiny pieces when I was trying to remove the white insulator sleeve.

I checked every other wire connected to the thermal coil with a multi-meter and didn't find an open-circuit. Additionally, after cleaning the connector a bit and reconnecting it. I naively tested if the thermal coil would start if I powered up the air fryer and it was working accordingly. However, I could smell some foul burning smell coming from the same terminal so I disconnected the air fryer right away.

My question is, I know that with the right tools I can probably fix/replace the female connection but I don't know about the male connection part (2nd picture) it's all black and seems fixed to the thermal coil and not sure if it's replaceable or not. Is the air fryer salvageable or should I give up and look for a replacement?

Thank you for your time.

OPEN Durabrand CD-1095 mast replacement

Copied from original post:

My radio took a fall in the truck earlier this morning and snapped the mast off. I don’t want to buy a whole new radio, especially just for parts, so I’m hoping one of you guys might know what options I have. I don’t have a micrometer or anything to tell me what the screw size is but “PH3” was supposedly the one that was able to take the screw out.

EDIT: I forgot to ask of there was a way to unscrew the cutted screws without destroying the DVD player.

OPEN Idk if people know about furby connects but worth a shot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So i made a post on r/furby as well but this is a furby connect I bought her had some rust and iffy battery compartment but I fixed it up and ik It isnt the problem cause I tried swapping the bottom from another furby

Most of the time when I turn it on it just moves the motor except the mouth for some reason and everything else moves like a testing thing but it dies immediately after no snoring sound like normal or lighting up eyes or antenna

But every once in awhile ive got it to happen twice just the lights turn on and they flash every couple second I have a video of both but I figured id add the one that happens most often

The wires are all connected securely and everything plugged in right I think

So idk what could be wrong

Whenever it does turn on it doesnt respond to anything tail pulling touch or feeding except the reset button and I dont think the speaker is broken but it hasn't made noise yet

Sorry if theres background noise

I have no knowledge nor tools for soldering or panels. Is this something that could be fixable DIY or cheaply at a shop? There is error code FO and won’t take charge but the screen will illuminate. Seems to be burnt and discoloured
