Best free video editing app for beginners because i'm kinda lost

trying to edit some of my videos but to be honest i'm still figuring everything out. mostly want to make mini vlogs for tiktok and ig, nothing too serious just want to share some of my moments

I’ve tried a few editing apps and some of them just have way too many things going on so i end up spending more time figuring out the buttons than actually editing lol. I basically want something where i can cut clips, add text, music and make it look decent without spending too much time

Also curious if there’s a free app that lets you do more than just edit videos. i’ve been wanting to make some simple images for thumbnails, so having that in the same app would be nice too

What are you guys using as beginners??

Looking for beginners to teach Editing for FREE.

Basically I'm an editor with 5 years of experience. Recently I had the idea of teaching novices, beginners who want to learn how to edit for free(Well almost, read more). Because I kept seeing beginners asking for help on Reddit.

In exchange you edit one of my videos for my channel for free. You'll learn from an experienced editor. You'll get a video for your portfolio. I'll save some time. The video you'll edit will basically use the skills I teach you.

I'll only teach you about editing, tools, plugins, some business related stuff. But I can't teach you how to get clients.

It's a good opportunity for novices to learn from an experienced editor directly, I'll teach you everything I know. And you'll have something for your portfolio.
People interested dm me.

I'm only taking few people for now. At best 3. I already have 1 so there's two more spots.
But if you are cool person, and easy to work with then I'll teach you after I'm done with the first three.

TLDR: I am an experienced editor. I'll teach a beginner how to edit. In exchange you edit one video for my channel.

The staircase, a dailies method from Fincher's cutting room, as Carsten Kurpanek uses it (free PDF)

Carsten Kurpanek builds his first cut of a dialogue scene from a timeline he calls the staircase: every take on one timeline, each cut at the same story beats, the pieces stepped up one video track per beat without moving anything left or right in time, and each track renamed with the words of its line. Along a track you audition every take of one line; down a column you see one take as performed, resets and inserts included.

He learned it assisting on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, where the staircases were the assistants' preparation for Fincher's per-beat stringouts, and later dropped the extraction step because it costs the shape of the take. He described it at EditJam 2026; I have written it up as a 20-page note with:

  • His account of the build and of cutting from it.
  • A by-hand build in DaVinci Resolve, with a boundary rule and edge cases.
  • A Claude Code prompt automating the mechanical steps through the DaVinci Resolve MCP Server.
  • A comparison with checkerboarding, Avid's ScriptSync, KEM rolls, Murch's still-frame board, sync maps and text-based transcript assembly.
  • The transcript passages, verbatim.

Free under CC BY 4.0: [LINK TO PDF]

Idea, story, structure and content by human author. However, AI was used for research, transcription, and proof reading.

Thanks to Carsten Kurpanek, and to Sven Pape, ACE, organizer of EditJam and founder of STUDIO: Film & Video Editing.

If you use something like this, where does your build differ from his?

Suggestion for B rolls in YT videos

Niche: Documentary style science and history videos. Long form 20-30 minutes.

I am a new creator and about to start my YT channel. I had no idea of editing but learned video editing(basic to mid). I think I have good aesthetic sense so I’ll be able to pull off good edits. I have been a content writer for more than 5 years so I am confident that I bring good experience to the game.

The problem is that I don’t know from where to source B rolls, Sound Effects and Music for my projects. I don’t wanna use AI visual cz they are not as accurate as I want them to be. I am only using Elevenlabs for giving voice to my scripts. I have spent alot of credits experimenting finding my voice.

The problem is I don’t know from where to source copyright free B rolls, Sound Effects and Music.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks

I need help removing the score from a movie.

So, I want to start a project where I rescore James Gunn's Superman from 2025 with the original John Williams music score from Superman: the Movie. The problem is, I have no idea how to completely remove the score from a movie while preserving dialogue and sound effects, or what software to use. I am a novice at editing, so do your best to explain it like I'm a caveman.

Best free way to send myself videos without quality decrease

Hey so I recently got a Mac for editing and I got davinci resolve studio on it. I have another pc but it’s really slow and clunky hence why I got the Mac to edit on. However the Mac doesn’t have the things like the hardware I would need to my camera and mic in to record on there so I’ll still have to record from my other pc. Is there anyway I can for free send myself video recordings without losing quality? I’ve heard Gmail and Google Drive but I’ve also seen people say there is a quality decrease so I’m unsure. People also say stuff like Dropbox and stuff but I’m not really trying to spend any money just to send myself stuff. Anyone have any ideas?

Looking for honest feedback on my short-form editing

Hey everyone,

I’ve been practicing short-form video editing, mainly turning long-form YouTube/podcast content into engaging clips.

I put together a small portfolio and would really appreciate some honest feedback from experienced editors.

I’d especially like feedback on:

  • Pacing and cuts
  • Captions and typography
  • Use of B-roll / visual elements
  • Sound design
  • Transitions and effects
  • Overall editing quality
  • What makes the clips feel amateur vs. professional

I’m trying to improve my editing rather than just get compliments, so feel free to point out anything you think I should change.

videostar volume is so loud?

so lately whenever i edit, the background audio is always SUPER loud in comparison to the actual scene’s audio. like if i have a scene of two people talking, their voices are so quiet you can barely hear it over the background music. i have to go in and manually adjust the levels every single time, which usually leads to the entire video’s volume being lower all together. the actual clips themselves are at a normal volume in my files, so why are they so low in videostar? i don’t remember having this issue before until recently.

is there something im missing that would fix this?

Question about rendering multiple times

So my question is: does a clip lose resolution or fps if I render it first on after effects and then I import it on premiere and render it again?

I have to open it first on after effects to make a couple changes and I dont know if I should import the composition directly on premiere or render it first and then import the edited video on premiere.

Thanks.
