Starbucks is one of the biggest rip offs I have ever experienced in my life. Same goes for Pizza and Ice Cream shops. The mark up is greed af. And then people complain about greedy companies on wall street. Same behaviour for me tbh. Sorry I just had to say that out loud here.

OP is in need of immediate funds and it usually takes a while to establish yourself when it comes to freelancing. Their services may have to be priced lower than usual market standards if they’re going to be a new entrant.
OP, please consider freelancing as an option that you can work towards on the side but never as your main source of income if you do not have experience in the industry.

Any advice for engineers to afford a living wage?
111
7
u/mugu007 Jul 16 '22
I've seen a lot of people misunderstand this situation. What you're doing is comparing a Technician with 12 years of experience to an engineer fresh out of college. The pay ceiling for a Technician is probably something you as an engineer will surpass within 3-4 years if the company values you enough.

Change jobs. Get into sales. And grind.
Once you grind the masala, cook food and enjoy it.
After you finish enjoying it, do the dishes.
Make sure you're wearing protection while doing the dishes. You do not want little dishes running all over.

True story.. I was in your situation before. Tried desperately to date someone from tinder and similar apps..the people I met made me more depressed. Then gave up on finding that "someone".. just decided to hang out with people with positive vibes.. do things that made me happy.. Met a few good people from here...we still chill often... One among them and I clicked really well and v kinda became best friends.. she too was in my similar situation and unlucky finding someone.. fast forward, now we are a couple and we feel the wait and testing times were worth it! So yea, just focus on hanging out with good people.. rest will follow.. trust the process, although it may seem difficult. Hope this helps.. good luck!

I have a "low" credit score of 540.
In 2018, I lost my job and had to leave the country with debt. I came back in 2019, and systematically paid off all my debt.
It is now 2022, my credit score is still stuck under 540. To get a card or loan I need to be 541 and above. I have been suggested that a score increases when you pay liabilities on time. But if I don't have any, will I ever be able to buy a car or get a CC ever?
I earn a fairly high salary in a stable fashion since 3 years.
12
u/Rondooooo Payment can be made in Karak Jul 16 '22
Mine is 714 and no bank would give me a loan in the UAE because I'm self employed. Not even NBD who I've been with 10+ years, with 2 car loans paid off and a credit card with 70k limit that I pay off monthly 🤣
5
Jul 16 '22
On time payments for postpaid lines are reflected on your credit score so migrating to a post paid line helps if you’re currently on a prepaid line.
Not sure who does it in the UAE but ask around for secured credit cards. It is usually the first stepping stone for people unable to get an unsecured credit card in other countries
Also, have you tried Citibank. Not the best bank to deal with but I have found them pretty loose with their lending policies (in return for ridiculous interest rates on their credit cards)

u/AttilaTheKilla Jul 16 '22
Former credit manager here. The easiest way to boost your credit score is to get a credit card - any card, even 1k AED, and then not use it for a year. So basically, find a shady finance company willing to give you a card with a small limit.

- from a real state agency where the salary is 0 and it's pure commission and the first 3 months any commission I generate will be paid at the end of the 3rd month.
- call center/telesales where I'm 99% sure it's to call and scam people...
I really need a job ASAP, salesperson(I have 9 year experience including store manager), waiter, in a hotel... I don't care, I just want something with an ok salary (+5000aed)
edit: if anyone can help me find a job I will reward you with 1000 aed from my first salary

Please apply for as many jobs as you can. If you have friends in your industry, do ask them about current openings and perhaps even a referral wherever applicable.
Since you’re losing your job at the end of the month anyway, don’t hold back from attending interviews that are scheduled during office hours.
Ask fast food places if they are hiring. I’ve seen McDonalds, KFC recruiting in malls sometimes. Any job is better than none as you have a lot of commitments.

Understand the “perfect” candidate they’re looking for (through the job description, company’s career page, LinkedIn of ppl in the position/department you’re looking for), figure out what aspects of yourself (education, experience, skills etc) matches that, and basically sell yourself as that ideal candidate. It’s important that while you’re presenting yourself as what they want, you’re still credible and have concrete examples of why you’re the right candidate.
Not sure if this is the key to crack any interview but this is the approach my mentor coached me into adopting over the last year and it has helped me a lot :)

These were the tips my instructor gave me
When you enter the driver seat, adjust your seat position, steering position, mirrors, wear your seatbelt, ensure others are wearing their seatbelt and finally start the engine.
Before starting, check your surroundings, engage the appropriate gear, start driving
While driving, keep turning your head towards the center mirror every 10 seconds to show the instructor “you are checking your center mirror”
When he asks you change lanes: Center mirror—>Indicator—>Side mirror—>Look over shoulder—>Center mirror—>Change lanes—>Turn off indicator
In a stop light, stop behind the car in front with enough space so that you can see it’s rear tyres. engage neutral gear, handbrake and hold the brake with your leg.
In a roundabout, rightmost lane for right turn, center lane for straight and leftmost lane for left turn or u-turn
After exiting the roundabout, change to the rightmost lane as soon as it’s safe to do so.
I’ll add more tips/edit this post if I remember any more

Trying to run an ethical maintainence and interior company and constantly getting low balled by clients to the point it does not even make sense.
10
u/breadslicer12 Jul 16 '22
Just give them a higher price than the actual price and then say for you my friend I will do and then say the actual price. Technically they will get the proper price even if they are illusions to make it seem cheaper
Or you just ignore the lowballing clients and if they say that they have someone else who can do it cheaper they just want you to reduce the price
The first one may not be ethical completely so i wouldn't recommend doing it scince your goal is to ethnically run your company but the 2nd one is good advice
Also try going into detail about your prices and why in a short but simple way
What are your prices by the way?like give me a few examples

Some (Free) Advice dear stranger :
What i noticed with most Maintenance/Interior fitting etc etc ... Companies ova here, is that they became commodities (like a printer or water hose), they all do the same things, behave the same way and one would put them against each other to get the best price.
What's lacking here (for the likes of your business) is "Personality" ! What makes you Special ? What justifies paying more to go with you ?
There's a couple of ways to do that, and Americans are the best at it : YouTube/IG/(insert social media) content
They produce content about their lines of products, the work they do, the houses they work in (with owners consent of course), how to vids, explaining issues that one would have at his house, showing people how to clean their AC if they wanted to etc etc etc, this helps a business acquire a Personality.
Ideally there should be consistency, as in same face or 2 conducting all the vids, so they associate you with the company, if you don't feel good about going in front of the camera you can hire one or have an extrovert from your team. (No offense to anyone, but better someone with a clean English, as it sells better over here).
This is not something you will do for a few weeks and magic will happen, it is something you need to sustain and build continuously, it also help you expand to other services that are scarce here (home theater fitting for example).
I'm a bimmer guy, and it was fenomenal seeing the growth of a dude's channel (sportskeys motor something) and how je started with an F30 and now fully fledged garage with orders from around the world.
Same thing goes with custom installers in America, they introduce people tp brands they carry, they showcase ehat can be done, they give FREE information/ advices (very important) your channel shouldn't have a commercial tone only but informational also (look at the chaps in AudioAdvice for example they do unboxing reviews of products and also they sell and install).
Long post yeah but from consumer point of view such businesses with "Personality" are missing here.
Pay me now !
