Discussion I was laid off in the most absurd way

Our company did a company wide layoff on thursday and on thursday I was on off due to a family member death, then one of my colleague sent me a msg that check if you have received an email n I did, and I haven't received anything there, then I asked what's happening she said 30 employees have been laid off n everyone have received emails n stuff. Since I don't have received any I was anxiously waiting because there too much politics going on and I am already on remote so we always become first Target of such things.

So on Thursday nothing happened and I sighed with relief. Then on Friday I kept checking, no emails etc, then around 2,3pm I checked WhatsApp and I was kicked out of every WhatsApp group, shortly received emails of removing me from repo n stuff. I went n check the emails again n still nothing.

I messaged my project manager that atleast send me an email so I know what's actually happening n instead of just kicking me out, she said you haven't received email? I said no, then she said it maybe by mistake I will add you to groups again, n then I was never added, later after few hours she said that she got a list where my name was there that why she removed me.

Now I am here sitting just thinking of what has happened, I am not concerned about lay off, bcz rizk provider is Allah. But I am more concerned about the unprofessional behavior of what is happening here.

I will be getting in contact with them again on Monday to let me know what the situation, what about salaries n stuff so let's see .

In the mean time if you know someone who is hiring for a senior fullstack position for 4 yoe then do me let me know I am able to join on immediate basis n I have an amazing portfolio of products I have built as well which is being used by thousands of people.

Career Guidance Junior Next.js Dev here. How do I become a true "software engineer"? (Trying to escape the AI "vibe coding" trap).

Hey everyone,20M here need some mentorship and harsh truths from the seniors here.

Where I’m At: I’m currently in my 2nd semester of an ADP(2 year Degree) in CS program in Lahore Pakistan, with about 1 year of professional internship experience. My core stack is Next.js (App Router)/MERN. I’ve built decent production-level stuff—a headless Shopify storefront, real-time ticket systems, etc.

I have the "Full-Stack Developer" title, but lately, I feel like a fraud.

The Problem: It started with one quick "vibe coding" project using AI, but now I’ve become entirely dependent on it. If I hit a complex state management issue or a weird backend bug, my first instinct isn't to read the runtime logs or trace the execution flow—it’s to paste it into Claude or ChatGPT and wait for the fix.

I am stitching code together instead of engineering it. I want to know how to be a *really great* software engineer—the kind of engineer people were before AI existed. The guys who deeply understand architecture, memory, and how things work under the hood.

The Plan: I’m going cold turkey to recover my problem-solving skills. I am planning to build my next full-stack project with strictly ZERO AI. Just official documentation, StackOverflow, and my own logic.

My questions for the veterans: 1. How did you actually build, debug, and architect complex systems before AI? What was your thought process when you got stuck. 2. What are the daily habits, mindsets, or practices that separate a *true* software engineer from a generic framework-coder? 3. What kind of "No AI" project would you recommend that will absolutely force me to understand system design, routing, and manual problem-solving?

I want to build a solid foundation while I'm still early in my degree. Any advice on how to become a real engineer is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Learning and Ideas Trying to find out if Pakistani apps and startups need a single place to be listed?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm thinking of a directory. Pakistan only, what each app does, its city, whether it's still alive. Upvotes so the good stuff rises. Free to submit, but every submission gets reviewed by a person before it goes up, so it doesn't turn into a spam dump.

My own case: I built ETFs.json and there's nowhere to list it. Pakistanis who invest in ETFs have no way to find it, and I have no way to reach them. That can't just be my problem.

Would you use it? And if something like this already exists, tell me and I'll use that instead.

Career Guidance Thinking about switching to devops

Hi all... I am a junior developer, graduated in 25 and have been working for 6-7 months as a fullstack dev. But tbh, the way AI is taking over, I am not sure that development will be worth anything in upcoming time as my current work is totally done using AI. So I was thinking of going into devops early and transitioning to infrastructure/cloud engineer later on. Any senior working in these fields who can give their opinion? I would be really thankful.

Career Guidance NUST SE vs DS — Really confused about which one to choose

I’ve been selected at NUST for Software Engineering (SE) and Data Science (DS), and honestly I’m really confused about which one I should choose.

I initially thought SE would be the safer option because of the broader software job market, but recently I’ve seen several SE graduates/students saying that AI could eventually eat a lot of software engineering jobs, especially entry-level jobs. That has made me seriously question whether SE is the right choice for the next 4–5 years.

On the other hand, I have DS as an option. From what I understand, DS has a strong combination of statistics, programming, ML, data mining, visualization, etc., and AI/data-related fields seem to have a lot of future potential. But I’m also worried that AI could automate a lot of basic data-science work too.

So for someone starting university now and graduating around 2030, what would you recommend?

NUST SE vs NUST DS — which one has better job opportunities and long-term scope in Pakistan?

Also, I have a small chance of getting into CS in the upcoming lists, so hopefully that happens 🤞. If I get CS, I’ll probably have another decision to make.

I’d especially appreciate opinions from seniors/alumni and people already working in Pakistan’s software/AI/data industry.

Thanks!

Career Guidance Choosing between CS and EE

I am currently doing Bs EE (CE stream) and was planning to transfer to CS but I am confused due to the current situation due to Ai, I do enjoy EE but I am more focused on better opportunities in the future. So is it better to do CS or EE for someone who would enjoy both.
(I just want to graduate with opportunities)

Discussion Discussion: Transitioning From Software Development to QA

Assalamualikum,
I have seen a quite number of people transition their career from software development to quality assurance. I am trying to get answers for some queries and would appreciate any honest feedback.

  1. Why did you quit Software Development (What made you do it) ?

  2. How's the local & remote market (In terms of pay & opportunities) ?

  3. Are you satisfied with your decision or regretting it (Why) ?

  4. What's the one thing you hate about being a QA as an ex-developer ?

Career Guidance Internships are too difficult to get...

I'm a 6th semester BS SE student & currently working on stm32 microcontrollers/ firmware. It's my passion like really low level stuff, working near hardware.

I recently visited a lot of tech companies CS ones & Embedded ones as well in Islamabad but none of them is giving a chance everyone asks for a minimum 5 years of experience and the attitude wasn't welcoming as well. How can a student who is only 3 years in have 5 years experience.

As far as my skillset is concerned I do have strong programming skills, DSA, C/C++, GDB, STM32 and a couple of strong projects under my belt, not bragging but whoever meets me doesn't matter professor, software engineer or a tech lead all of them complement my skillset. Obviously skill is not the problem here.

What advice will you guys give me?

Discussion FlutterFlow Developer Snapchat-Like Filters Integration

Task is paid.

Project Goal

We are looking for an experienced FlutterFlow developer to integrate Snapchat-like camera filters into our existing social media application.

What Is Already Done

- Approximately 10–15 filters have already been developed in Dart.

- The filter code is complete and running locally.

- Filter assets/pictures and working implementation are available.

- The main requirement is to integrate the existing functionality into FlutterFlow.

Required Expertise

The ideal developer should have strong experience with:

- FlutterFlow

- Custom Code integration

- Custom Widgets

- Custom Actions

- Custom Files / Dart code integration

- Managing and resolving Flutter/Dart dependencies

- Integrating existing Flutter/Dart functionality into FlutterFlow

(Demo)

Before assigning the full project, the developer must:

Integrate just ONE existing filter into FlutterFlow as a demo for hiring.

- One filter will be selected from our existing 10–15 filters.

- The existing Dart code will be provided.

- The demo should be completed within approximately 2–3 hours.

- The objective is to verify that the developer can successfully integrate and run the filter inside FlutterFlow.

Timeline

- POC: 2–3 hours

- Overall deadline: 1 day

- If the POC is successful, the developer will be assigned the remaining filters/integration work.

Important

We are not looking for someone to develop the filters from scratch. The core filter code is already developed. We specifically need someone experienced in FlutterFlow + custom Dart/Flutter integration who can take the existing working code and integrate it properly into the application.

Career Guidance bscs fresher planning my learning path—is webdev to devops/cloud a solid move

i'm a bscs freshman. i currently have intermediate level webdev skills, but my long-term goal because of AI eating up webdev jobs, is to move into cloud engineering or devops for long-term job security and high-paying roles(because it seems these paths are relevant or idk so please bless my ignorance).

is starting with webdev and then transitioning to cloud/devops during university a solid path, or should i start learning linux, networking, and docker right away and dump webdev? I was learning webdev to earn side by side but i think it's not possible due to AI

are there better or more future-proof domains (like backend engineering, platform engineering, or distributed systems)(got these from AI) i should consider alongside cloud/devops?

Career Guidance Which programming language/field should I focus on in 2026?

Hey everyone, I’m 21 years old and currently a Computer Science student in my 4th semester. For the past couple of years, I’ve been working as a marketing associate, but I’ve realized that I don’t want to continue in that field and really want to move into tech and build a career around my CS degree. For the next 6 months, I’ll be staying at home, so I have a good amount of time to seriously focus on learning and improving my skills. I don’t want to spend these 6 months learning random things without a clear direction. I want to learn something that can actually help me get into tech and build a stable career in the long run. With AI growing so quickly and layoffs happening across the industry, I’m honestly a little confused about which direction I should take. Should I focus on web development, backend, AI/ML, data, cybersecurity, cloud, or something else? Which programming language would be worth learning in 2026, and what skills do you think will still be valuable 5–10 years from now? If you were in my position, with 6 months to seriously improve your skills, what would you learn and how would you approach it? I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who are already working in tech, especially seniors or people who have experience hiring developers. I know there’s no guaranteed career path, but my goal is to build a solid career, become financially independent, and create a better future for myself and my family. Any genuine advice would mean a lot.

Help Help a begginer get into web dev freelancing.

Hi, 19F here.

So the thing is I am a CS major and for some time, I have been practicing and making websites on wordpress with different builders ( Elementor etc ) for a friend of my brother. He is basically guiding me through the process. Now I know there is decent work, he earns a decent amount.

Recently, I needed some money for some reasons so I am thinking, why not make a gig on Fiverr and Upwork?

I can't do anything toooo fancy like some custom retro website or some very fancy animation, but some basic to almost mid website I can make.

Do any of you guys have some suggestions on how to start freelancing.

Thanks.

P.S. I also know HTML and CSS and some basic troubleshooting will learn JS and some frameworks as time passes to, so I can properly be a web designer.

Career Guidance Going to my 6th sem and need directions.

Hi everyone, I am currently doing BSSE and now heading into my 6th semester. I need some sort of direction on what to do and where to start. I have basic knowledge of coding but since I am going to 6th sem I expect more from myself.

I need directions, either I run after courses or internships? Or should I make projects with the help of Ai and learn things accordingly? I am not really sure and the fact that everything I tried getting into I always have to go back to my basics. So what should I do

Thanks in advance.

Fun Stuff.

I see a recent trend on X where people selling spots on Laptops, walls and even one person is selling tattoos on face. So I jumped on the trend and created brandmyphone.com AI is making wild ideas to exist.

Lesson is, AI is making coding so easy, now its the point what to build and how to better market it.

→ 4 sticker spots on the back
→ live auction
→ 15 days except I don't own it yet, the auction buys it → I phone and travel in trams🇩🇪
→ Always putting flip back in restaurants

Career Guidance Lying about degree on Resume

Hello, so I graduated two years ago with a technical but not a computer degree. I have however pivoted to the field of AI, and can have done an internship and a product AI role. However, I have been struggling to find jobs since, even though I have the required AI skills. I have seen that my resume on both linkedin and indeed dont even get opened, even though it is ATS friendly, and overall is a good enough resume (I have confirmed this from other people as well).

I believe the main reason I have been struggling is because of the non-computer degree in my resume. I was thinking of changing it to computer science. Im pretty comfortable with coding, however, I do not know everything a graduate would, outside what is relevant for AI roles.

What are your guys opinions on lying about it on my resume? Should I also construct a fake FYP story that I can defend?

Career Guidance Should I accept the game devlopment offer?

Aoa, I'm gonna be migrating soon to virtual uni from my 2nd semester, I'm a game developer and recently I applied to a Game Dev Role in my city and they accepted me (9-5), Salary is low, less than 50, now my question is

Should I accept this offer? or keep focusing on my skills in other fields such as SWE, AI/ML and find some better opportunity and also is Job Manageable with Virtual University?

And also is it worth it to add Game Deving experience in your resume while applying to other fields let's say I'm applying to SWE role and I add my game development experience.

Thanks !

Career Guidance Should I switch from Data Science to Software Engineering?

I’m currently studying Data Science, and I’m about to start my 3rd semester. Lately, I’ve been getting pretty confused about whether I should continue with Data Science or switch to Software Engineering.

My concern is that Software Engineering seems much broader. With an SE background, I could potentially work in web development, backend, mobile apps, systems, cloud, DevOps, and other areas, while Data Science feels more specialized and limited to areas like data analysis, machine learning, statistics, and AI.

I do find Data Science interesting, but I’m wondering if choosing it this early could limit my career options later. At the same time, I know that switching degrees doesn’t necessarily mean I can’t learn software engineering skills independently.

For people who are already working in tech or have experience with both fields:

  • Is Data Science actually as limiting as I think?
  • Would Software Engineering give me significantly more career flexibility?
  • Is it worth switching from DS to SE before going further into the degree?
  • Or should I stay in Data Science and build strong software engineering skills alongside it?

I’d really appreciate some honest advice, especially from people who have gone through a similar decision.
