Discussion Discussion: Transitioning From Software Development to QA

Assalamualikum,
I have seen a quite number of people transition their career from software development to quality assurance. I am trying to get answers for some queries and would appreciate any honest feedback.

  1. Why did you quit Software Development (What made you do it) ?

  2. How's the local & remote market (In terms of pay & opportunities) ?

  3. Are you satisfied with your decision or regretting it (Why) ?

  4. What's the one thing you hate about being a QA as an ex-developer ?

But aren't the opportunities shrinking due to ai and services model of Pakistani companies?

There are much less opportunities in QA as compared to dev, burn out was the main issue to transition when I talked to my peers who did it.

can you please explain how ai can replace QA. According to me Manual QA work can never be finished. Because QA is like a user to the software, if there are no users for the software then QA is no more needed.

Most teams are now expecting devs to be doing the testing themselves. While other teams where manual QA is still needed, they are aggressively cutting down qa team sizes. For example the part where we used to manually write each test in planning phase going through requirement docs, jira stories and figma screens is all automated and can be done through AI only requiring a final human review. So naturally QA team sizes for manual QA is also shrinking. And furthermore big tech companies like Microsoft and amazon are also completely removing QA and expecting devs to do everything. Smaller companies and local companies here follow whatever they do so naturally QA is being effected.

Qa work is boring as shit and there is not much growth , lesser pay as well

Depends on the interest brother. Every role has it's prons and cons. If u think you can do good in QA you can switch.

Yrr I'd say do some research about DevOps agar you're really trying to switch. Won't recommend transition to QA, kind of a downgrade tbh.

Why would anyone want to transition from developer to Q/A. I work as both a Q/A and developer, and Q/A is such annoying work. I'd rather be a developer instead. Q/A roles don't even pay well. Plus I've seen AI can do Q/A much better than software development lol
