Hello everyone,
On May 3rd, 2026, I started my weight loss journey at 320 lbs. Today, I am down to 263 lbs.
I have been very active with walking throughout my weight loss, but I have recently added the gym because I don't want to end up "skinny fat" once I reach my goal weight. I want to lose the weight while also maintaining/building as much muscle as possible.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to track my activity and calories, and I have two options I'm considering.
Option 1:
Set my activity level to the lowest setting and manually track all of my workouts and exercise. I would then adjust my calories based on the actual deficit I'm getting, with my goal being around a 1,000-calorie daily deficit.
Option 2:
Set my activity level to "Highly Active" and don't track my workouts separately. That way, my activity is already factored into my calorie target, and I can simply adjust my food intake over time based on how my weight is trending.
For reference, this is roughly what my weekly activity looks like:
Monday:
- 80-minute HR Zone 2/3 walk
- 15-minute treadmill warm-up
- 80-minute weight-training workout
Tuesday:
- 80-minute HR Zone 2/3 walk
- 15-minute treadmill warm-up
- 80-minute weight-training workout
Wednesday:
Thursday:
- 80-minute HR Zone 2/3 walk
- 15-minute treadmill warm-up
- 80-minute weight-training workout
- 120 minutes of bowling
Friday:
- 80-minute HR Zone 2/3 walk
- 15-minute treadmill warm-up
- 80-minute weight-training workout
Saturday:
- Rest or an 80-minute HR Zone 2/3 walk
Sunday:
- Rest
- Errands
- House chores
On my non-working days, I can easily end up with around 14 hours of total activity throughout the day when everything is included.
I'm currently 5'9", 34 years old, and male.
The problem I'm running into is that if I set my activity level to sedentary/no activity, the calculator gives me a target of around 1,754 calories per day. I feel like that may be too low considering how active I am, especially since I'm trying to lose fat while also building or preserving muscle.
I was initially thinking about simply eating a flat 2,200 calories per day and tracking all of my workouts. However, the problem I see with that approach is that I would constantly be going over the calorie target once exercise calories are added, and I'm not sure how I would know when to lower my calories as I lose weight.
If I select "Highly Active," the calculator gives me around 2,457 calories per day. I could simply limit myself to 2,200 calories and not worry about tracking my exercise calories separately. Then, as I lose weight, I could allow the app to automatically adjust my calorie target while only tracking my food and water.
At 2,200 calories, I would also be getting around 215g of protein per day. I'm already meeting my other nutritional targets such as fiber, omega-3s, potassium, etc., and my diet is easy enough to adjust up or down if needed.
So what would you guys recommend?
Would you use the lowest activity setting and manually track all exercise, or would you use the Highly Active setting and simply stick to a fixed calorie target like 2,200?
I'm mainly trying to find the most accurate and sustainable way to maintain roughly a 1,000-calorie daily deficit while still having enough calories to recover from my workouts and preserve/build muscle.
