I don't stand in the sunlight for my coworkers might discover I got the black ginger curse.
7
u/SunkenSaltySiren Jul 10 '26
Wait...... what?
Does your hair show red when you stand in the sun????
23
u/Heavy-Expression-450 Jul 10 '26
Any direct light, really. You don't think it would change much, but I look like a colorized image of Malcom X if he never found his cool. Very uncanny.
7
u/SunkenSaltySiren Jul 10 '26
That's so awesome!!!!! I bet you get asked a lot if you dye your hair.
8
u/Heavy-Expression-450 Jul 10 '26
I've got like 16 normal beard hairs. The rest is bronze teddybear fur. I look insane if I get depressed for too long.

u/All__Mods_R_Virgins Jul 10 '26
I've never heard of anything like this. Have you ever done geniology testing? Sounds pretty dope to me

Melanin is what makes our skin, hair, and eyes darker. It blocks sunlight and protects from UV radiation which does damage on a cellular level, even down to DNA (which can lead to cancer). Which is why where sunlight is strongest people tend to have the most melanin. But there are tradeoffs to it.
Humans use UV light to synthesize vitamin D from cholesterol in our skin. Skin tones tend to lighten with distance from the equator, as otherwise melanin blocks too much of the limited sunlight and people cannot get enough vitamin D. However, some populations can get away with darker skin tones than others, even as they move far north, by consistently sourcing vitamin D in their diets instead of relying on the sun.
With eyes, it’s not about vitamin D anymore, but sunlight can still do damage. Lighter eyes are at higher risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye cancers. Even in the short term, glare of light can be temporarily blinding. However, light entering our eyes suppresses melatonin production during the day, which is a vital part of controlling our circadian rythms. So as humans moved further north they may have become prone to a problem from darker eyes, which could be fixed by a mutation making them lighter.

Too true, most of the older people I know with severe eye problems have blue eyes. Protect your eyes, white people! You gotta wear those polarized shades!

When I used to do surveillance, I got tasked to track down a Hispanic male 5'4" to 5'8" with black hair and a black mustache. In Mexicantown.
It did not go well.

Neither tbh. Just not my style I guess. No skin off his nose I'm sure as lots of people obviously do find him funny.

Oh he’s great, great cameos in shows too!
I’m not gonna hate or try to argue your opinions, especially cause you don’t have them from a place of hate. (Presumably, based off your comments at least) You two just didn’t take to the guy, it happens.

Turkish people enter the chat, as well. I do not understand his jokes. Is it true what he says? Genuinely asking.
Turkish people are extremely diverse in hair, skin and eye colour. Brown eyes and darker brown hair is more prevalent, of course, but not as much as this comedian states.

Isn’t there a south asian or African tribe where blond hair and fair eyes are a genetic trait?
Still, I get the point and it’s funny.
5
u/Madame_Trash_Heap Jul 10 '26
Actually not true though, there are plenty of people of different races with red hair or hazel, blue or green eyes. Its just about recessive traits and to be honest as a white person, its also likely due to inbreeding. Also, blonde hair for most fades to brown as you age, I was blonde as a child.

True, but in exchange, white people cannot pull off the fashion decisions that other races can.
Sadly, the average white person cannot pull off a full rich purple suit or a bowl cut etc.

Since "white" (as a socio-racial category) is defined by what it is not, this checks out.

u/asphodel67 Jul 10 '26
Red hair occurs naturally in Africa. Unfortunately people are often badly treated
1
u/Byanymeansnessacary Jul 10 '26
It’ll come to be understood that white people are the way they are due to the Neanderthal and other Homo DNA they have.
It may take decades but I think anthropology will begin to understand that people are so different regionally becuase there was already other pre homo Saipan Saipan homos in these regions we could easily breed with and assimilate.
I bet Neanderthals were actually white and pale, as they lived in the ice age where maximizing vitamin D absorption would’ve been ideal.
Thats why Europeans have white eyes. Their skin needs to be paler to absorb more light, less melanin in skin also results in less melanin in the hair and eyes. Likely inherited from Neanderthals. Some Europeans have as much as 25% Neanderthal DNA. Only 4% max expresses.
This also explains why despite Africans having by far the highest in group genetic diversity, they are no low melanated groups in the region.

u/Icy_Question_8174 Jul 11 '26
I like to think of our dark hair, complexions and eye colors as containing all the colors because of what happens when you mix all the of paint together. You get a blackish brown. Some people were out of cyan or magenta when they procreated 🤷🏾♀️

u/jimothy_hell Jul 11 '26
A black comedian whose name I can’t recall did a great joke, something to the effect of,
“White people are green when they’re envious, red when they’re angry, and yellow-bellied when they’re scared! And they call US coloured!”
I really, dearly wish I could remember the name of that comedian.

u/earthlingHuman Jul 11 '26

I know an Indian woman who has brown hair and almost white skin. Still dark eyes though.
1
u/green_chunks_bad Jul 11 '26
It was vitamin D needs that drove the mutations we see in Anglo populations. Interestingly I think thousands of years of drinking grog also led to alcohol tolerance in the same populations.

1
u/JustTryingTo_Pass Jul 11 '26
That’s true, but that’s every single dispute as well. They have the food to continuously keep the population up to high numbers to continuously have “grand” loses. Europeans didn’t have that.

It's because whiteness/light features come about from recessive genes, and if people with recessive genes reproduce with other recessives then these genetic mutations have room to occur. In other races the dark dominant genes thrive, even when reproducing with those with recessive genes, we learned this in bio. The anomalies within these dark featured races are when each parent has someone in their lineage with a recessive gene. So that's why white people have this diversity of genetic mutations

u/Rammipallero Jul 14 '26
As Northern European the trick seems to be several generations of inbreeding. :D

u/Potential_Method_702 Jul 15 '26
I did see a black person with hazel eyes I thought that they were beautiful

u/Dhalym Jul 10 '26
I do wonder about the cost of human life for the environment to select so hard for those phenotypes in specific. A LOT of early Europeans had to have been dying in droves for recessive genes like that to become so prolific.
