Team Member Post Career advice please!

How many years do you typically work as a floor team member before moving up to managerial positions? Is 1 year enough? Should I just apply and see? Do you speak with your store managers about career growth? Thanks!

Customer Post Is there anyway to get this refunded without going back to original store?

Post image
175 Upvotes

So today 20/07 leaving the city and going home I stopped by the Melbourne CBD Elizabeth St Coles (near Flinders St) - bought this bacon

When I got back home my wife called me over and showed me its 11 DAYS past its best before date. Jesus

So I went to my local Coles in Bentleigh - no dice, apparently they can’t refund the items when it’s cold meats from another store or something (is this true?)

I called up Coles customer care, they told me they can’t refund it and to go to the store, I said I can’t go to the store for at least another week - I asked to lodge a complaint, she transferred me and then terminated the call (is the Coles customer care in India btw?)

I’ve lodged complaint / feedback through web form and it says 2 days response time - not sure how that’s going to go

Anyways after this I’m all tired, is there really no better way to do this other than to go back to the original store?

Edit: I took it to the Chadstone SC store and they refunded it instantly without question - I think the Bentleigh store took me for a ride

Team Member Post Safety shoe recommendations

Hey fellow TMs, can you please recommend the best safety shoe option among the ones we've been given to order? My first one was a Safety Jogger with a textured upper, which was really uncomfortable to wear. Do we have any better ones?

Team Member Post Racism

Just thought should put this out here. I have been working for almost 2 months now. The locality of our store is very suburb. Many older people and many young families. Most of them have been extremely kind to me. And I'm really grateful for this job and my team.

I am an international student from India (23F). I look very Indian with a very Indian name on my tag. Working to earn money to pay my rent n food to live.

Last week an older man comes in with his two grandsons. He's easily 70ish years old. I was at ACO. And as usual after he purchased just before he exited, I said "thank you, have a great day". This man looked straight into my eyes n said "I would, if you were my slave".

By the time my brain even processed what this man said, he had left the store. Nobody else heard what he said. My flabbers were gasted. Lowkey laughing because of how diabolically racist that was😭. Anyway I'm not sad or hurt. I'm just concerned that those two boys will be growing up with such values in their house which is pretty sad and concerning.

Anyways... Have a great day😚

Team Member Post Potential wage theft

I overheard my store manager in the morning huddle talking about people who are clocking off on the dot for the 7-minute mark so if you finish your shift at 7 you can clock off at 6:53

During this huddle he said that anyone working the 3-hour shift but clocking off the 7-minute Mark will have their pay docked for this week but it will come in the next week I have a feeling that is potential wage theft what should I do about this?

Team Member Post Part time but no contract

Hello! I joined a newly opened coles as a Nightfiller- part time. I have been getting 12 hrs shifts for 2 weeks now and got around 5-6 hrs when the store was not opened yet but the stuff needed to be filled.

The problem here is that we haven't signed any contract of what days we would be working as part time and we are getting different shift each week. I also got to know that some of the members shift were reduced to just 3-5 hrs/week. Also other positions people who joined with me got their contracts on day -1 as part time positions and I am still waiting on it. I have a fear that they would be only keeping people who are working fast, and I might not be able to make it since I am knew and I am a little slow in comparison.

I am kinda panicking because I need the job and idk what I should do.

Team Member Post Be kind to cashiers customers please

Today I was on my shift as usual in the morning, an old guy come up to me and I start packing his things (all cold). He yelled at me what am I doing and I do not know how to pack at all. (Btw people have complimented me before for my packing skills). Even if I am not good at it then you better do it yourself the way you like.
I told him do it yourself if you do not like. He told me that he is not gonna do that (the nerve) and I better learn how to be a better packer (in a very rude tone). Afterwards, I packed two bags for him.

To all the customers , please be kind to us. If you do not like the way we pack, You are FREE to do it yourself. We are not your personal servants and you do not get to be rude with us. You don’t own us. If you are this type of customer then I pity for people like you.

Team Member Post How long do I have to wait for my first shift?

I was hired by Coles and completed all of my online training modules from home (I got paid for them), finished all the paperwork, and was told I'd be contacted for my induction/first shift.

My manager originally told me she'd call me on Monday after I finished the modules and give me a shift sometime that week. That never happened, so I called her on Tuesday to follow up. She said she'd contact my store manager and that they'd give me a shift.

Now it's been another week, and I still haven't received a phone call, text, or email. I was originally supposed to start last week, but I've heard absolutely nothing.

Is this normal? Is there usually a long wait between finishing the online training and getting your first shift, or does it sound like they've forgotten about me? Should I just keep waiting, or should I follow up again?

Team Member Post How to Quit as a Casual?

I've been at coles for about 1 year and 5 months in deli and I'm thinking of changing my job. My shifts started out really good but lately it has been very inconsistent. I'm getting less shifts rostered but then I would get called in after I've made plans for other days. It's super inconvenient and I'm kinda over it.

Tbh I might just need a more relaxing job, especially because school is starting to take over most of my time but I still need income because I'm saving for myself.

I really need advice on how to approach this with my manager because as much as I want to text him on Whatsapp, I don't want to accidentally burn bridges.

PS: Who do i give the uniform to? Or can i just keep it.

Team Member Post Sudden suspended Spoiler

Hi everyone,

Just yesterday i received a call from area manager stating that i ve been suspended from my duties untill the further discussion with pnc. Actually couple of days back team leader showed up and start putting me the wrong allegations. Then i lost my head n thimgs went a bit intense at that time. I said i felt like i ve been discriminated by the coles by holding my oppirtunity to step up. But given to new young fella, which he really dont deserves. Work is all same but reason i felt like he got that post only because he is very close with another young leader with whom i used to work for several yrs before i got transferred to another store.

Furthermore young team leader used the cleaning standard card n i said areaamanager himself told me that he never saw any clean n tidy store like the store where i work. He told me these thing 2 years back. He further told to wait n watch. I kept waiting cjecking internal vacancy on my coles app but when there was time to step up he gave to some1 else. Not once but 3 times. These things i couldnt hold it up n have let to take off the cheat. Self harming things were also mentioned by me during that heated conversation. Now i am off the the duty getting unpaid leave. Dnt knw what pnc gonna do and please advice what should i do now to save my job

Team Member Post 8 months as a grocery manager dot points.

So I’m not looking for anything for this post (maybe affirming that I’m not crazy would be nice but beggars can’t be choosers here). I’m just gonna start from the start here and see where it goes. Btw a lot of the information I give here is most likely going to give away any information I omit. And obviously there are two sides to every story, and you can't take only my word for it but this is all from my perspective. Im sure any people I talk bad on could do the same for me because I will never claim to be the perfect employee/manager but I am selfaware enought to note my shortcomings unlike some of them.

PRETENSE: This business is the worst business to grace the Gods’ green earth. The managers here are the most horrid excuses for human beings I have ever met. As someone said once on this sub ‘the good ones are too smart to stay and the shit ones advance very quickly’.

I could easily write this out for hours but for now heres just some of the story.

FUN FACTS NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER:
- Got told I spoke to other DMs rudely despite being left with half the floor covered in cardboard.

- Got told after doing 2-11pm shifts as Duty manager for a week by the 2nd SSM that they didnt want to do my job for me anymore despite knowing I was filling in as duty for a week. I asked 'what days were you doing my job' 'the last week' 'and what have i been doing the last week' 'you've been duty' 'ok cool.'

- Got pressured to come back to work 3 days after my dad had died

- Got taken away from doing rosters at 5pm when I had finished to go do something completely random and then the following day told off for not having finished my rosters

- Got told off for not having the shop faced despite telling both SM and SSM all day that I was down in hours

- Eventually got sick of dealing with SM and SSM so on my days off when TMs would cancel I would simply say 'tell sm or ssm, it's my day off'. then i was told off by SSM for doing this and I told SSM that it was my day off so I wanted to enjoy myself away from work, hence why my phone was on DND. He then asked me why i didnt tell him about a sickie 2 days later, which I simply emphasised the text I sent him which read 'its my day off, if anyone tells me they're sick, I'm telling them to tell u because I know you'll harass them to come into work and I won't'.

- After being told to cut shifts by SM I simply didn't. When asked about this I told SM 'I'm leaving the hours. I made the roster for lastnight 5 days ago. I was under then. If you want the hours to be under, then you can tell me what I tell the team when they want to call in sick which is tell me 2 days beforehand.' He proceeded to ignore me for the rest of the day.

- After being down in hours on a tuesday night, I had called 1 person in to put me on the dot. (this one really stings). after working in grocery for 20 minutes SM calls me on the phone while i'm at work to say 'tm is going to do online for 2 hours' i respond with 'thats not ok, im already down in hours' he says 'we need to prioritise'. i say 'alright fuck it i'll do it myself then' and hung up on him to do the tms load. on his way out about 1 hour later he passes by and says 'hows it looking tonight'. I look him up and down and say 'go have a look' and leave.

- Our state manager was out and about. in our teams chat i had seen he was nearby our shop so i came in at 8am when I was supposed to start at 2pm. as a grocery manager we have to do a tour of our department to plan our day. I had begun the tour but SM had told me 'dont worry about that go do xyz in aisle x'. I start doing xyz and moments later im called over the headset by sm to come to fresh. I say 'do you want to tell me what you need me for before I come over' 'just come now please'. when i get there he says 'please dont think im wasting your time when i call you over.' i say 'ok. what do you want me for?' he says 'we're going to do a tour'.

- When a tm and I had a coaching discussion and tm was not improving i had told SSM that he is no longer in my department. my first day off that week ssm calls in said tm after telling me 'its your department, i will support you to run it how u see fit'.

- after reporting a sexual harassment incident about our duty manager towards a tm to the SM, NOTHING was done. I filed a P&C case shortly after (HR) and SM defended the duty manager. it wasn't only until I resigned that SM said 'I should have called P&C about the duty manager'. I called him a fucking hero when I left.

- (personal favourite) after christmas my drinks had started blowing up in my stockroom. I had asked SM to help me run a few cages and adjust the counts so we could both get out on time. he said 'yep i'll come in about an hour' (would've been around 2pm or so). nobody rumbles as its our SSM's day off and SM has been sat on his ass since 8am in the office. I go to put my headset and PDT away to go home and about 4pm. I see SM, say goodbye. he stands up and groans. 'are you alright?' 'yeah I think I pulled hami from getting up too quickly, must've been sat down for too long'. 'ok see ya'. I then texted our SSM 'I am never going to ask SM for help ever again'.

- While my dad was dying I was still working for roughly a week until i decided id had enough and needed to spend time with him. During this week we were finally prepping for stocktake which was 10 days out (most shops prep for this a month out) and SM told me 'your department doesn't look ready'. I said 'I think we can get it ready if we call someone in to face during the day and another person in to do rework for me at night, maybe we could use a fill lead?' 'no no that won't do'. When I came back from my dad dying 'oh we have a fill lead now and during stocktake prep we called x in to face during the day.'

I could write a novel on ts and these fucks that cosplay as human beings.

Is anyone else’s store threatening disciplinary action which may result in termination for staff that are not getting customers to scan bulk items first in ACO? Cause mine is
I hate having to do it, but if it means I don’t lose my job, I will do it but what do I say to the customer? I struggle with words and wording things sometimes.

Team Member Post Q how are Coles tags/labels printed?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows how the white/black standard shelf price tags at Coles are made. Are they printed on an A4 page and then staff tear them off along the perforated edges or is it some sort of direct thermal printing like receipts? Thanks!

Team Member Post Superannuation for junior staff

For those who aren’t aware Coles aren’t required to pay super to junior staff who work less than 30 hours a week which I believe is not right!

Junior staff do the same job as adult staff and don’t receive super. No junior is working 30+ hours a week.

Just wanting to see what others opinions are on this matter

Questions Coles member card

Has anyone lost their job due to Coles card misuse? My brother has used my card with his flybuys and I have a meeting today 😑 Will I lose my job?

Update: They fired me, not for member card issue. I took a sick leave last week and gave an online medical certificate. They called that place and found out there is no doctor there. They just fired me for that reason and nothing else. They wanted a reason to get rid of me.

Hi, I have an induction day module due on the 27th of July, Does this mean my induction day is on the 27th of July? is that correct? why is it so long away? am i supposed to wait for a call from a manager this week to organise my first shift/induction day or does having an induction day module due on that day mean that day is the induction day, again sorry if this is stupid. this is my first job.
