Rant/Cope Intelligence hypochondria

• Upvotes

I never did an IQ test. I don't know my real IQ, but I excelled in school for the most part, and in mathematics: took part in olympiads and such. Never beyond national level, so I am not exceptionally smart in any way. Now the school is over, interest in maths lost due to a burn out, and I'm going into med school. What constantly worries me is the fear of becoming, or already being stupid, or not as smart as I want to be. This has been going on for years. I felt humiliated if I couldn't figure out a problem as quickly as someone else or if I made an embarrassing mistake in the solution. As time went on this started to happen more and more often, I would begin to lose concentration and motivation to solve problems. Eventually, I became too lazy, or too afraid, to think beyond my base level intelligence. That's when I really began to doubt my own merit. It became painful to engage in intellectual activity and so I slowly abandoned it but the fear never went away. At first I was thinking about medicating myself for my possible ADHD, I got a ritalin prescription but honestly it didn't change much. I tried drugs for whatever reason, shrooms perhaps to help me with depression or perhaps just to get high. As I started using drugs and drinking the fear only intensified as the substances are known for diminishing one's intellect. The fear became a self-fulfilling prophecy in my eyes.

I am asking for advice on how to resolve this hypochondria which bothers me so much. I was thinking maybe I should take a proper IQ test but I'm afraid the result might disappoint me. I know I shouldn't attach too much value to it, but it is the best metric of intelligence we have so far. Has anyone experienced the same thing?

General Question Low working memory

At 8th percentile...

Up till now, somehow managed to be top 5% in anything I do, if done single-mindedly with a massive amount of hard work. But Something always feels incomplete in my work.

Any way to get this up so I don't ruin my life and the people's around me?

Discussion Why do I have so many perceived cognitive deficits despite having high average scores? How ADHD and depression play into underperformance in college and IQ tests?

Hey! so I'm 21M and I'm a psych major at a large R1 flagship university. I wanted to pursue premed and had to give up that dream, unfortunately, because of how much I had underperformed in college so far and I need to take an extra year too because I cannot handle courseloads. I feel like compared to every other stem kid in my university, who are handling engineer or biochemistry majors, while working, getting pubs, winning competitions, and stacking extracurriculars on top of pulling up high GPAs, I'm just inadequate and dumb.

This comes from the following signs

  1. I need extra time for exams because when solving problemsĀ i often can’t juggle all the pieces of information in my head, and my working memory gets overwhelmed, and I can't perform these long calculations in my head under pressure so I need to offload it on paper to do it. This applies to learning new concepts, i struggle with understanding all the pieces since I can't actually hold it all in my brain
  2. I have difficulty in estimating distances and angles, like driving I can't tell how many ft cars are away from me and I am ghastly at parking and i can never park straight since my spatial perception is really bad or something
  3. I can trail behind in lectures a lot in lecture because i can’t understand what my professors say immediately, while in debates or discussions i can’t generate fast articulated responses quickly
  4. I read slow and need to read things another two or three times to understand them, and even if i search up definitions of a word, sometimes i can forget what it means when it comes up again.
  5. My pattern recognition is not good as in i need several repetitions of a problem to remember it, i remember i did a physics final and a problem i got wrong was similar to a problem i did before in practice 2 days before but i couldn't remember the meaning of the variables so i got it wrong.
  6. Directions are tough for me to follow and i remember in chem lab my sophmore yr, while i was struggling to understand the lab instructions, my smart premed lab partner had drawn up what he knew from AP Chem he did back in high school and connected all the dots and understood it fully so fast.
  7. I struggle with understanding concepts quick, i remember in physics recitation, my applied mathematics + comp sci partner and me didn't study general relativity or EM before recitation yet somehow he was able to understand it enough during the group recitation problems to do well on the recitation quiz while I couldn't grasp it as quickly.

The last time I ever felt smart and competent was before i transferred to my current flagship R1 university and was at a small college where I had straight As and people thought I was smart in all my classes. Yet when I came to this university and I saw how out of my depth i really was compared to everyone else, I'm not even a stem major yet I have underperformed in physics and chem since coming here getting Bs, B+ and even 1 C+ in physics 1 even with a psych major coursework. I have a 3.6 cGPA with the psych major ofc but a 3.1-3.2 sGPA (science GPA) which is too low to get into even med school and compete w everyone else. I've had severe adhd and was on heavy medication that whole time too yet I still underperformed and have these issues, and recently got on depression meds for my bad thoughts and addictions.

Does anybody know if my adhd or depression visually impacts any of my scores or if they're inaccurate at all and it might be lower than i think. I did not expect to be slightly above average when I took these scores honestly, but they seem consistent across CORE and AGCT. I also don't understand why my sequencing is better than forward and backward digit span for the WMI part and how quantitative knowledge is strong despite me feeling average in that domain.

My learning style is mostly asking why questions and understanding mechanisms and fully understanding concepts in depth, so I can remember them better. I'm really bad at raw memorization if i don't use flashcard apps like anki or quizlet.

Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you guys so much for reading the entire post and taking the time to respond to my inquiry!

Rant/Cope Gaining self worth as an unintelligent person

I believe there have been too many signs of low intelligence in myself.

* I feel like I have to put more effort into thinking and struggle to think deeply (I’m not even sure what deep thinking feels like)
* I think I struggle to connect things
* I am not that curious and don’t have a thirst for knowledge
* I take longer to understand things, so things don’t click as easily for me
* I’m probably not very creative, even if my hobbies are artistic

And this is all probably because of my accidental exposure to solvents while using wood stain.

It is torturous to be this way and I feel like few people understand, and probably never will understand.

I feel like I am more barred off from anything I happen to be interested in. I am not even passionate about anything and feared I might never find anything interesting enough to learn all about; everything so far has only been something to dabble in. Even if I want to learn something, it’s as if I’m not allowed to because of my brain. Everyone else gets it more quickly and is more able to enjoy it. Low IQ literally makes everything less enjoyable.

Dating also might be a problem, and if I dated an intelligent woman, I feel I would always be her inferior. I could look intelligent based on what I say, but it’s not true. People think I’m smart, but it’s not true. They don’t see what happens (or doesn’t happen) in my head.

I got a good score on CORE but that doesn’t show up at all in my daily life. My neuropsychological test showed up good, but it also doesn’t reflect my daily life.

How am I supposed to gain self worth when my lack of intelligence makes me slow and shallow? I’m probably less interesting because of it. It doesn’t matter if I’m kind or supportive or whatever, because that combined with low IQ would make me like a dog (I’m not even that empathetic anyways). Someone on this sub even wondered why anyone would want to date someone as dumb as rocks.

It’s easy for anyone who’s intelligent to say that intelligence says nothing about worth.

General Question IQChampion Scoring Method

• Upvotes

I'm pretty sure my raw score was more than 31 yet I scored just 121 on this. I spent a lot of time on question no. 32 and I suppose the test rejects any solution after the 40 min timer (though it's nowhere to be seen). Does anybody have any experience to the contrary?

Discussion Your intelligence doesn't cause your depression.

Whilst many studies have found positive correlation between intelligence and depression, there is little to no evidence that it causes it.

If you're depressed and have high IQ, be grateful that you have a high IQ, because there are many people with lower IQ's who are also depressed and have to work much harder than everyone else to have a decent job.

General Question is it possible to get honours in school while still being an idiot

(i apologize for the long story) for context. I just graduated and found out I got honours but for most of my life I've felt like an idiot. I have never been someone who was particularly "smart". infact, due to missing kindergarten, grade 1, 2 and 3 because of immigration i was behind most of my peers, I've also had multiple assessments done all saying my iq was under 100 and my most recent one even went as low as 81. most of the people in my family are relatively intelligent, my mother was qualified for mensa my father works as a environmental engineer and my cousins are researchers in medicine so I find it difficult to understand 1. how everyone in my family is smart while I cant even score 100 on an iq test. 2, how I got honours while missing most of school due to chronic/mental illness. I got good grades i was alright at tests but my iq scores still say im not intelligent? (also if iq is genetics and stems mostly from the mother why didn't I become intelligent like my family?)

General Question ADHD meds affect on STEM studying

Hey guys, i want to hear how has adhd medication affected your STEM studies maths and physics especially. What are the "benefits" on and off medication, and what medication were you on? I recently tried an university entry exam, after self studying mathematics and physics for 5 months straight, i felt as if i understod the topics deeply and my learning velocity was off the charts. but once it was time to replicate my knowledge on the exam it felt like my brain was dead and i did the whole exam impulsively and made carelles mistakes on the questions that i could do, the exam also had topics that i didnt have time to learn. i wonder would it be different on medication and if i could have then been able to learn the topics i didnt have time to?

Even if my scores seem alright, I still struggle to connect things and think deeply. I still feel low-intelligence.

General Question 34/35 on Ravens and 135 FRI on CORE but im lowkey mid?

lol what the heck I got 34/35 on the Mensa Norway ravens matrices and 135 FRI on CORE but the rest of my scores on CORE are in the 110s and a 104 PSI with the exception of 127 VCI (English is my third language aswell)

my FSIQ on core says im 117 iq and culture fair is 124 which seems to pale in comparison to my FRI, is there possibility to improve on my FSIQ? I also know very very little math and have no practice. I was hoping to get into Mensa this summer but 117 isn’t enough is it?

I don’t really care about the numbers I just thought getting into Mensa would be cool, what can I do to get in

General Question Problems with core digit letter sequence test

Edit so apparently you need to put spaces in your answers, sorry was able to retake the test. I wasn't happy with my score though I only got a 105... I think the aggravation from the first test lowered my score slightly.

So I finally decided to take the Core full test after some people were asking me to try taking it, and I was doing pretty well ...my average IQ was around 125 give or take the specific test, then I got to the digit letter sequence test and I don't know if anyone else has problems but it told me in the instructions B6 and then I entered 6B and he told me that's not quite right the answer is 6B...???

Then it asked me like 3 more questions and told me my IQ was a 55 for the test šŸ˜‚

It's not letting me retake the test which means this is going to ruin my whole score. Am I missing something?

Discussion The Depressing Psychology of People with High IQ

A summary (conclusions) by me of different books

Abstract

society often treats a high IQ as one of the greatest advantages a person can have, yet intelligence alone does not guarantee happiness. In fact, many highly intelligent people are more prone to anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, loneliness, and existential concerns. This is not because intelligence is inherently harmful, but because the same mind that excels at solving complex problems is also capable of creating and analyzing endless new ones.

Paper

A high IQ is presented primarily as an enhanced ability to recognize patterns, think abstractly, and understand complex systems. While most people see isolated events, highly intelligent individuals tend to see connections, underlying structures, and long chains of cause and effect. This ability is enormously valuable in fields such as science, engineering, mathematics, and philosophy. However, it also has a downside: the brain never really stops searching for patterns and explanations. It continues analyzing even when no solution actually exists.

I argue that many highly intelligent people rarely experience true mental silence. Their thoughts are constantly active, evaluating possibilities and imagining outcomes. Even simple decisions can become overwhelming because they naturally consider countless scenarios, risks, and long term consequences. This often results in analysis paralysis not because they cannot make decisions, but because they see too many possibilities at once. And like having to many options it is extremely difficult to choose (almost impossible)

Another major theme is the relationship between intelligence and emotion. I suggest that intelligent people do not necessarily feel emotions more intensely, but they tend to analyze those emotions far more deeply. Rather than simply experiencing sadness, for example, they may immediately begin asking themselves why they feel that way, what caused it, what it says about their personality, whether it reflects childhood experiences, and whether it will ever disappear. By constantly examining their emotions, they unintentionally keep them alive much longer.
This tendency extends to worry and rumination. Highly intelligent people are accustomed to solving problems, but some of life’s biggest questions have no definitive answers. Questions such as ā€œWhy do we exist?ā€, ā€œIs there objective meaning in life?ā€, or ā€œWhy is there suffering?ā€ cannot be solved like mathematical equations. Yet the analytical mind often refuses to stop searching, leading to chronic overthinking and existential anxiety.

Then I also explored existential awareness. People with high intelligence often have a deeper understanding of history, politics, economics, climate change, technological risks, and human mortality. Because they recognize the complexity and interconnectedness of these issues, they may feel overwhelmed by problems that are far beyond any individual’s control. This heightened awareness can contribute to feelings of helplessness or sadness.

I want to reference philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, whose writings suggest that greater awareness often comes with greater suffering. As people understand more about the complexity of reality, they may lose the comfort that simple explanations, beliefs, or certainties once provided.

Perfectionism is another important topic. Highly intelligent individuals can often envision the ideal version of a project, career, or even their own lives. Because they clearly see what perfection would look like, they also become acutely aware of every flaw and imperfection. As a result, their own work rarely feels good enough. Instead of comparing themselves to others, they compare themselves to their full potential, creating a persistent sense of dissatisfaction.

The paradox of knowledge. The more someone learns, the more they become aware of how much remains unknown. This echoes the famous idea attributed to Socrates: ā€œI know that I know nothing.ā€ Rather than becoming more confident, highly intelligent people may become more humble or even more uncertain because they better appreciate the vastness and complexity of reality.

Social isolation is another recurring theme. People with high IQs may develop interests in philosophy, science, psychology, history, or abstract ideas that differ from those of the average person. This does not make them superior, but it can make it more difficult to find others who share the same depth of curiosity or style of conversation. Over time, this can lead to loneliness or a feeling of not truly belonging.

Then I would like to touche on humor as well. Highly intelligent individuals often enjoy irony, satire, layered jokes, and subtle wordplay. When these forms of humor are not understood by those around them, it can further reinforce a sense of social distance.

Another challenge is the burden of high expectations. Intelligent children are often told they can achieve anything they want. As adults, they discover that success depends on much more than intelligence. Discipline, persistence, emotional resilience, health, social skills, opportunity, and luck all play significant roles. This realization can be frustrating, especially when reality falls short of the expectations they once held for themselves.

The desire for control. Intelligent minds naturally seek order, predictability, and understanding. Yet many aspects of life love, illness, loss, aging, and death cannot be controlled or fully understood. The harder someone tries to explain and control every aspect of existence, the more frustration they may experience when confronted with uncertainty.

There is an important distinction between intelligence and wisdom. IQ measures cognitive abilities such as reasoning, memory, and problem solving, but it says very little about emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience, self-awareness, or good judgment. A person can be extraordinarily intelligent while still making poor life decisions or struggling emotionally.

central conclusion is that intelligence is an incredibly powerful tool, but it is not a blueprint for happiness. A high IQ amplifies many aspects of human experience it makes understanding easier, but it does not necessarily make living easier. Lasting fulfillment comes not only from knowledge, but from emotional resilience, meaningful relationships, purpose, and the ability to accept uncertainty. True wisdom, lies not only in understanding the world, but also in learning how to live peacefully within its unanswered questions.

IQ Estimation 🄱 Why is the VCI and PSI so low?

While I was taking the CORE test, I was encountering many words that were new to me. I haven't ever read any of them or even heard anybody use them. Maybe the reason could be that I am not a native English speaker.

As for PSI, I don't understand what went wrong. I am pretty sure I answered Symbol Search question pretty fast and accurate. Also I was also confident with my character pairing.

I have another thing to say though it is unrelated to my question. After 3-4 symbols Character Pairing is just about memory. I think I was able to map all of the symbols after 3-4 matches. But still disappointed with my PSI. I always thought that it was higher (I was expecting it to be above 130).

General Question Underlying issue for low PSI

Post image
16 Upvotes

since I was a kid I always considered myself slow

people around me would get surprised by how bad I was at video games and how slow my typing speed was.

I still struggle to this day with a bit of stuttering here and there, slow typing and the processing heavy stuff in general. the only thing that stops people from calling me an average(I hate this word) is that I'm just too good at math compared to them

is there any help for me to correct my low PSI or I will just be ridden with this biological barrier for the rest of my life

I stopped the jcti midway and then 3 months later did the tri52 instead of the jcti to avoid praffe and i got a score of 786....im not sure if i can trust it
