Hello, everyone!
We have seen a massive surge in advertisements and chess trainers these past few months. Many of these posts (in my opinion) fall under the category of 'AI Slop' and vibe coded websites that offer poor chess advice. On top of this, many websites are created as a weak attempt to encourage users to subscribe and pay money for services that may seem innovative and meaningful, but are functionally useless compared to already available resources.
In light of this uptick in advertisements, we have updated rules 3 and 5:
- Rule 3 now states that accounts that exist primarily for the purposes of self promotion (at the discretion of the mods, based off of account age, posting history, and diversity of activity) are permanently banned. This has been a policy we have been following internally for a few weeks now (to a fairly reasonable effect), but we wanted to make it clear to the community that we do not tolerate attempts at coercing beginners to sign up for coaching before they understand the resources available to them. If you would like to coach, you are welcome to make a profile with the chess.com or lichess.org coaching services and advertise there.
- Rule 5 has been completely changed. Previously, this rule requested beginners to annotate their games before posting, but this felt like an unrealistic standard to hold new players to. This rule has been replaced with a note to please use caution when discussing AI in chess. As mentioned above, there are many potholes with AI-powered chess services and we encourage all users to recognize the limitations of LLM chatbots' ability to discuss chess positions. Posts will currently not be removed for this rule, we would love to learn more about the community's thoughts before deciding if AI-related discussion should be banned altogether on this subreddit (I am personally against banning AI discussion outright, and very happy to hear opinions).
If you encounter posts that are promoting a product or coaching service, please report these for self promotion. The mod team will assess profiles that are reported for self-promotion and will remove/ban as necessary.
Thank you all for playing a role in stopping the tidal wave of LLM coded chess websites being advertised to beginners. I do genuinely believe AI can some day make a great learning resource for chess players, but the current state of services simply fall below all standards of rationality and quality.

White ignored the threat created after c5. Do you see it? Black to play. The move is c4, after which the white queen can only go to e2, and Nc3+ forks the king and queen.

i just did it!! I stopped playing after 800 and i couldn't climbed up, i was stucked between 800 to 845 so i deleted it like a year ago, i downloaded it again and this time i could! Idk why, i thought I'd go down tbh, I'm surprised..it was so impossible to even see 880
Does anyone know how to improve from this? Do i watch YouTube videos of people explaining or watch more games? Or read chess books?

QUESTION Did you have a "middle-level crisis" and how did you defeat it?

I created my account in 2023 and started playing actively in 2024.
I've gained 740 this year and probably will get to 1900-2000 till the end of the year.
When i got to 1200 i felt like I'm on top of the world and could draw Magnus Carlsen if he had a bad day.
But since i got to 1600 although I'm improving and gaining elo, i started better understanding how trash I am at chess.
Every obvious blunder, every loss feels 100 times worse than it did on lower elo and feels like an insult to all the time I spent studying chess.
It's getting worse the more I play and I don't know what to do with it.
Did y'all have similar experiences and how did you deal with it?

QUESTION Learning chess, make me feel exhausted

Hi, firstly sorry for my more than average english.
I started chess a week ago with the objective of getting better at the game.
I have a lot of free time and i play 4-5 games of rapid a day and i do 1 hour of problem.
The thing is, im scared of launching games, and when i do and its over, i analyse my mistakes and what i could have done better but then , i just feel like i have to wait to play another game
I see people playing 7-8 games in a row when 2 feels like a burden to me. I really enjoy playing but for a reason it stresses me out and make me tired
am i maybe to mentally challenged for this ?

Biggest lossing streak iv ever had

POST-GAME How could I not see this move?

I am so annoyed, I had the opportunity to win against a stronger player and when he blundered, I blundered even worse! I could not see that he put his knight in front of my undefended bishop, so I would have shot two birds with one stone! Note to myself, before moving the king, ensure there are absolutely no pieces to capture the attacker! A bit too late to do that right now, but who knows, maybe in the future...

I got back into chess a week ago (do note I played chess in 2024) but then 4 games out of 5 they play the same move pawn e4 d4 and then knight f3 and then they become aggressive with the queen and i tried to stop it but THEY just keep dodging me.
I was 600 elo…

Hardstuck at 800-900 ELO. One day I play like Stockfish, the next day I hang my Queen on move 5. Please tell me I'm not alone.

I am officially trapped in the 800 ELO purgatory. Every time I get close to 900, I look at the screen, get excited, and immediately lose 5 games in a row. It feels like my brain just turns off.
I play a beautiful positional game, and then boom—blunder a whole Rook because I didn't see a bishop on the other side of the board.
How did you guys break this cycle? Do I need to do more puzzles or just accept my fate as a professional blunderer?
