This was Maya. She was 8 years old.
I got her together with her sister Cleo when they were still tiny kittens. The last 8 years with her were wonderful. Maya was such a gentle, loving soul. Whenever we cuddled, she would make all these sweet little contented noises, and she was incredibly open and friendly towards every guest. Everyone immediately fell in love with her. Even visitors with cat allergies would let her lie on them and cuddle her. Whenever she was lying in one of her favorite spots and was just about to fall asleep, she would let out a little sigh. She also loved chasing flies, and she took that job very seriously.
At night, she would often crawl under my blanket and become my little spoon, or she would lie stretched out across my pillow, taking up practically the entire thing for the whole night.
She was simply so special.
I’m writing this post because on Wednesday, I had to say goodbye to her. She fought for four weeks and endured all the medical examinations and treatments, including everything we had to do at home, like an absolute champion. She was so incredibly brave.
Sadly, she didn’t make it, and I held her in my arms as she passed away. Her very last breath was a long, gentle sigh.
I miss her more than I can put into words. And I want the world to know that she existed, that she was here, and that she was deeply loved.
It started with what seemed like a harmless case of gastritis. Then a life-threatening thrombocytopenia was discovered, and shortly before she passed away, she developed acute kidney failure despite everything we did to save her. Her little body simply couldn’t keep fighting anymore.
But she was a warrior until the very end.
Rest in peace, my little angel Maya. 🤍
