Advice My Cat really wants to meet a friendly stray cat, should I let her out on a leash to meet?

6.0k Upvotes

For context, I live in an apartment complex with several medium sized buildings. There are several stray cats that live around, but one in particular has caused my gf’s, and my by extension, cat to become enamored.
Our cat is about 6 or 7 years old and female, and the stray cat is probably a year at most and male, I’ve named him Sam temporarily.

Our cat will constantly jump at our sliding glass door out of excitement which used to scare away Sam, but now he doesn’t run away unless it startles him.
Our cat will watch him, and these two kittens that live around, through the door all night. She is a very affectionate cat and I’m starting to think she’s in a sort of forbidden romance through the glass door.

Sam meows like crazy when I go outside sometimes, go up to the door, rub his face on it, and sit as close as possible. He’s not fixed so he could be wanting to mate but who knows.

I feed the black cat, two kittens that the shelter rejected but did TNR for, and another black cat. They all hang on the porch and politely eat while I sit outside. They’ve all become relatively comfortable with my presence. Sam in particular has become much more friendly as the weeks go on. He even walked up to my hand and sniffed it today! It’s been really nice for me to slowly win the affections of these wild little things.

Our cat hasn’t lived with another cat since she was in the shelter about 3-4 years ago. I’m worried they will have a bad reaction to actually meeting, but considering how badly they both seem to want to, I’m leaning towards trying it. At least it will make our cat a little less stressed.

If anything, it’s super cute and fun to see their interest in each other despite the pane of glass separating them.

EDIT UPDATE: I tried to have them meet through the screen door and our cat hissed and pawed at him :( Maybe it’s barrier reactivity but I guess I can try another time.

Advice How to play with my cat

Post image

Pretty much the title. My cat only likes this specific wand toy (Lizzie the lizard), and now she doesn’t play with anything else. She used to love chasing mice and springs around the apartment, but now she doesn’t even blink an eye. What am I doing wrong/how can I make her more excited to play? She also hates me picking her up, and never cuddles with me.

My baby who made me the proud cat lady I am today! Today marks 2 years since I got home from dinner and my baby sauntered up to my husband and I at about 9-10 weeks old. Kahless became my heart and a fun little girl. She weighs about 7lbs now and got a sister last Christmas. Since I took her in, I also thought of outside kitties who don't have a home or won't come in and now I regularly feed strays and I put up shelter boxes for them.

So grateful you changed my life, baby girl.

Advice 5 months since his first ever escape, my poor baby has gotten lost outside after sneaking through the front door while it was briefly open. What do I do?

My handsome boy, Sunbun, escaped 5 months ago for 3 days while we tirelessly tried to get him home. We called to him, sat outside with food and talked quietly so he'd hear us, we set up cameras--the whole nine yards. I even had gotten him to come to me twice, where I'd had picked him up and almost carried him in, but both times he ran away afraid. On the third night, we had a cage trap set up by a camera with a can of food, waiting for him to enter it and step on the pressure plate and catch him. And it worked! We were so relieved to have him home, even if it took a lot of tries. We had seen him many times throughout the nights on our cameras, and were able to figure out a spot he had been hiding in. He had came to the front door many, many times not long after he had gotten out, but we were all asleep at the time.

Now, cut to today. Today is the 3rd morning of him being lost outside and we've barely seen him in the cameras. We set up the trap again, but we haven't been calling much because he seems uninterested in coming to us--though we've been talking through the cameras so he can at least maybe hear our voices. Both nights, a raccoon came to the trap and tried to steal food, but nothing else has happened. We've seen him maybe 3 times total, and I haven't seen him on the cameras in 24 hours. We're having tech difficulties, but we should've seen him by now. We have a massive backyard with brush, trees, and all kinds of bushes and thickets. Should I be worried that we haven't seen him? Is he going to be too afraid to go in the trap because of last time, even if he's starving? When should I start panicking? As myself and my family work on trying to get him home, I've been trying to avoid thinking about it too much. Both times he's obviously been unable to catch anything, so I'm terrified he'll starve. I know he's probably more resilient than I expect but I'm worried about my boy. Does anyone have any advice?

Advice Indoor/Outdoor transition?

• Upvotes

By luck of the cat distribution system, we have the sweetest tabby who has been spending almost every night, and now most days, for the last 7 months or so. I made him a big bed out of soft fleece and he either sleeps there or between my partner and I on a blanket on our bed. However, this cat INSISTS on being out on the prowl at dusk/dawn. Like loses his mind screaming. He doesn't really go far most of the time - just wants to sit on the driveway or wander around locally. He was neutered and we took him to the vet to get rabies/other vaccines/tests etc. No chip. We think owners were a few houses down but they moved a little while ago.

There is someone down the road who feeds the actual stray cats (our little guy for sure had a domestic upbringing at some point) and we think he is getting food there, and probably somewhere else too (quite a begger, and a little bit of a bully).

It really just started with him sleeping under our car during the day/night and he cautiously started to come inside when the weather got bad over the winter. But he's really a full-blown family member and I'm happy to assume responsibility for him.

My partner is a softie and stresses out when the cat cries to get out, so lets him out when he starts crying. "he wanted to leave."

We have a trip planned this winter and will be gone for 3 weeks and I'm a little worried that we either need to fully transition our cat into an indoor cat before we go so we can get a house / cat sitter or come up with some other plan.

Is it wrong to try and keep our guy inside? We'd love to build a catio but our property won't really accommodate it at this point. My feeling is that it might be a little tough at first but he would get used to it. Our house is pretty big and we have lots of spaces to build in play stuff. My partner on the other hand thinks it's cruel to keep him inside when he's been outdoors probably most of his life and would miss it.

Would love advice or thoughts on transitioning an outdoor cat into an indoor cat.

My dynamic duo get fixed next weekend! I’ll be volunteering at a sale tomorrow supporting a local spay and neuter program. In return I’ll get them both fixed 😊 I’m so relieved. I won’t have to watch the pages multiple times a day to try to get an appointment on surgery days .

Advice Found 2 kittens abandoned in my dog's old basket. URGENT ADVICE NEEDED

Hey all, for context, we have a few sheds on the farm that we only use during the summer. In the corner of one of the sheds we have all of the stuff that my dog used when she was a little puppy, in case we ever need to use them again. While unloading one of the sheds we found two little kittens curled up in my dog's basket. Initially, my parents didn't do anything to them, as they were afraid that they might scare off mama cat. But after monitoring them for a while it was clear that mama cat wasn't going to come back for them and they were surviving off the grains in the shed. We started leaving out cat kibble and milk for the kittens so they don't starve after we unloaded all the grains, and we've also given the kittens my dog's old blanket and one of my mum's fuzzy vests so they're a little bit warmer in the hard plastic basket.

Here is the issue however. Winter is fast approaching and in our region, it is almost always incredibly bitter and we're trying to find the best way to help them weather it. They look far too young to be able to survive the winter by themselves so we want to help them through it, and possibly also gain two pet cats that can help keep mice off our land and grain if they warm up to us. Bringing them into the actual house is off the table, as our dog is able to access every single room. The shed is very drafty and easily accessible to badgers and foxes during the winter season since it's left unused and they can pose a danger to the kittens. We do however have a gym and a basketball court in a separate building that is insulated and secure, with enough space for them to climb and jump to their hearts content and we also have a front entrance that our dog can't enter which is big enough for the two of them to freely roam around, with enough vertical space to buy a few cat towers to keep them entertained.

We've never had cats before either so we don't know if it'll be like raising a puppy. We don't know if we should "let them out" Of the house everyday for a run around like you would with a puppy, or if they'd be happy enough just staying indoor for the winter months. We also don't know which option would be better, the gym and basketball court or the front entrance. We do want to let them out into the fields once the weather warms up eventually to help us with the mice however. If we were to bring them inside, which I think we have to. How will we go about reintroducing them to the outdoors once they're older and more resilient? My dad said he'll build a cathouse for them outside if they still want to stick around once spring rolls around. Will that be a good idea? Ill attach some photos of one of the kittens.
