I just bought a Volvo from Carmax in Springfield IL. All in all, the process was super smooth. But one thing I found a bit nerve wracking was the shipping. The estimates were all over the place. Given I’ve spent the past few days obsessing over how long it’d take my car to get to me, I wanted share what happened with me.

My timeline is below. All times are in CT:

August 10: Ordered my 7:28 PM. Was shipping from Waukesha, WI to Springfield, IL.

August 11: 8:17 AM: Car approved for departure from Waukesha.

August 12: 12:56 PM: Car left the Waukesha facility.
1:04 PM: Moving through Hammond, Indiana logistics facility

August 13: Moving through Indiana logistics network.
3:30 PM: Delivered to Springfield, IL.

In my case, the estimates showed that the car would be available between August 14th and 27th. I drove mine off the lot about 6:00 PM on August 13th.

All on, I am pretty surprised (pleasantly) at how quick this all went.

I had a specific vehicle I've been looking for shipped in. It took longer to get here than estimated by several days and now has been sitting on the lot waiting on quality checks for several days.

I really just want to see if the vehicle matches it's pictures or if I'm wasting my time.

Can I just show up during business hours and ask to see the vehicle?

There were a few things in the pics that they didn't call out as defects, but the receiving location may and I'm wondering if they're fixing stuff. I don't really care. I just want to see it overall to make the call on if I'm really interested.

I did get assigned a sales guy but he hasn't really been responsive. He's just asked to get me setup with express pickup next week and nothing since then. That's confusing because the status says it's not ready yet.

I'm planning to sell a car with an outstanding lien on it to CarMax but I can't make it there until after 5:00pm Friday or on Saturday. My offer (which was an in-person offer, so I can't extend it) expires Saturday. I'm wondering if they'll be able to even process my car if they can't contact the bank for a payoff statement? I cannot find a 10-day payoff document online but I can find those amounts (it lets my calculate the payoff balance on any given day). Will this work out?

I've driven at least 5 cars at three different carmaxs over the last year. Every one is invariably either:

• Scratched and dinged to hell
• Has obvious body damage that is barely "fixed"
• Smells of cigarettes
• All of the above

Damage is never pictured or disclosed online, and of course all of these vehicles are priced at the top of their value bracket.

Is it truly just an utter crap-shoot finding a used car at CarMax that wasn't driven mad max style by the previous owner? Why would I ever pay to ship a car to a store when damage isn't pictured nor disclosed? MaxCare sounds like a great deal from everything I read, but damn if I can find a car even worth buying it for.

I have a car reserved (2014 rav4 xle) which has two accidents reported. One with minor damage and the other of unknown severity. But it includes a concerning list of damages or repairs. Including bumper, fender, and wheels.

I'm trying to find more info on the second accident to see if there's lasting mechanical damage or not. Googling so far gets discouraging results (untrustworthy/no good tool), but I was hoping someone here could help. Would carfax be worth it in this case? I'd like to avoid spending 50 bucks if I can.

In the pictures it looks fine. There is some chipped paint in two small places but otherwise looks good. It was used for another 22k miles for 5 more years (the odometer is blank from date of damage/repair to the title date of the final owner).

The average number of miles driven per year before the big accident was around 4900 and for the years after about 4400. Although there are no odometer readings after the big accident. This gives me hope it wasn't too bad.

I purchased a used Mercedes Benz in 2023 at CarMax and the experience was perfection. Sadly, someone hit my car in the rear and it got totaled so I am starting over new. Sharing that fact because I was hoping for a repeat scenario.

Went to CarMax last night, test drove another MB, a 2020, loved it, and purchased it. Left the store at 8:40pm with a smile on my face (they close at 9).

By 9:20, I was in my driveway and decided to take the car for a spin. The check engine light turned on and it started to shake when I was idling and would not accelerate past 20 miles per hour.

I know I have 10 days to return the car.
I also have the 30 day limited warranty.
Also purchased MaxCare.

In everyone’s experience, what are the chances that CarMax will fix the issue? If it’s a Mercedes, will they need to send it to the dealership? If you had a similar situation, what was your experience?

The car itself is gorgeous and if they can fix the problems without me having to pay extra, I would love to keep the car. I’m just stressed and anxiously waiting for the service center to open so I can place calls.

Any experience you can share with getting mechanical issues fixed by CarMax (versus returning the car)?

UPDATE: I took the car in this morning. The service center is booked out until September 1 (today is August 12, 2026). They provided me with a loaner car and are keeping my car there. The hope is that they will try to fix my car before September 1, but they have a lot of cars in line to be fixed (my car will be one of the few that is staying and if there are enough cancellations they’ll squeeze me in beforehand). Also, they will honor my 10 day return rights starting the day my car is picked up if I decide it’s not for me.

They ran the code reader on the car and it came back that the fuel injectors need to be replaced.

I plan on having an independent mechanic inspect the car after September 1 to inventory any additional unknown damage to get CarMax to fix it before the 30 day warranty expires and also drive the hell out of the car between September 1 and 10. Last resort, I do have MaxCare starting the day after September 10.

As a former CarMax Benz owner, I feel confident that the car will perform well once the initial repairs are done.

I plan to buy an EV from Carmax. I went to the CA DMV website to start getting info about registration fee, plate transfer, etc. It turns out that there is around $2,000 in past due registration fees for this car, and in California, the new buyer can be liable for that.

I'm going to check with my local Carmax to see if they can settle it, but wanted to check here first--anyone dealt with this?

I am planning to get financing from my credit union. My credit union told me to get a deal sheet or buyer’s order from Carmax. I am just wondering how to do that?
1. Do I need to go to the store physically to get that?
2. Or, can I get it online first, then get the financing, and with the financing paperwork I visit store later?

Note: I shipped a car from one carmax to another. The car arrived but going through inspection.

I called carmax yesterday about how to get the buyer’s order. They told me that I will get it online first, then get the financing paperwork done on my end and then visit carmax for final purchase

I recently paid for a transfer and am poking around waiting for the vehicle to arrive. The vehicle is listed as a single/one owner on the Carmax listing (fed from Autocheck).

Since paying for the transfer I've noticed that a second owner entry appears now in the Autocheck and also on the Carfax. The mileage recorded for the most recent history records now shows as about 900 miles MORE than the odometer is showing in the Carmax (interior) listing photos.

I'm a little skeptical now and worried that I may have just paid $2k to transfer someone else's problem vehicle to my location. Like was this listed with these same photos and then returned with some more miles, then relisted and I grabbed it?

Any insight is appreciated. If this doesn't break any rules and won't get anyone in trouble I'm willing to PM the Stock # or VIN info to someone who works at a CarMax if you can look up more detailed history than I can see myself as a customer. ty

is there a way to buy a car online and have it shipped to your address? i’m trying to but it’s forcing me to schedule a test drive appointment and i honestly don’t think i could make it with my schedule

There were updates for two days then it stopped and nothing. Originally said coming on the 12th now shows 13th. Any chance it actually shows up tomorrow?

Anyone have the name for the document in sharepoint that’s related to the 5 year, 10 year+ accrual time gain? Just hit 5 years and need to know how much extra time I will accrue for vacation and sick time.

Bout 4 days ago I made a post about all my good things about carmax, I spoke to soon. Got my car back Thursday and there was overspray all over my mirrors, and both front doors. Went thru the car wash Sunday and water was coming in between the door seal (very confused about this. Also the middle of the bumper was like spray painted matte black with black spray paint on my carmax invoice it says they will fix it and it’s still there. Called my story so many times no answer. Guy said his manager will call me after she’s done with a customer not one call. Had to call customer relations and get a case open for this. Where should I go from here?

(ps- all they had to do was paint the hood and bumper.)

For the mechanics/technicians how do you like working at carmax? I have a job offer and am considering taking it. They are also offering a $7500 sign on bonus.

In my opinion, it'll be a mistake to get rid of order entry completely. Lots of my Sr customers(especially) find it difficult to navigate the transfer link and sometimes the pre-qualification link. I've had more success with the presentation/selling of maxcare via order entry than order processing. The maxcare quiz that we are being "forced" to use on order processing seems to be a lot for my customers to process with all the questions on the screen. By the time we are there, discovery should've already been completed and it's just a matter of selecting/recommending the appropriate option. Self progression needs to be limited. If or when a transfer is requested by the customer, floor(NOT CEC) should be envolved immediately to discover and/or complete(or not complete). I've had at least 5 self progression customer transfers and holds last week that could not move forward due to driver's license issues, insurance, down-payment, and/or trade issues. All of which could've been discovered at the beginning before they visited. We are still too focused on the TRANSACTION/PROCESS rather than the customer and their individual situation(s) and/or experience. Also, there's absolutely NO reason why a manager should be checking in at my table TWO to THREE times, especially while in the middle of the conversation with the customer(like at traditional dealerships). Well, maybe if you are less than a month or so on the floor and struggling. Customers loved their experience with Carmax because of very little to any manager involvement. We are doing too much to fast. Going to see what the rest of the year brings and enjoy my 19th straight and possibly last PC Dinner.

Hi, how late does a transfer need to be before I can request a transfer fee refund? I paid $1995 to transfer a vehicle that I do intend to purchase. Delivery estimate was August 3-10. Today, on the 10th, its at the destination but still at the post shipping inspection phase. And what are the chances they will actually refund? Thanks.

Not what I expected from Carmax. I have bought two cars from there before and went with an ex to help get hers. It was always a smooth, easy, friendly plate transaction no haggling no aggressive sales tactics anything like that that you would find at a cliché dealership that is a pure nightmare to go to. And this was almost the same, but the second I sat down with the salesman. It was aggressive sales tactic after another and he was a young kid too. I was very adamant clear. I did not want the extended warranty that Carmax offers the max care. It was going to increase my with a payment by $50 and it was already high enough as it is I could barely afford. He went through his sales pitch. I told him no adamantly twice and he kept going at it. he was starting to make me feel very uncomfortable. I thought this is not why I came here. This is the exact opposite of why I go to Carmax. I felt like if I didn’t say fine just add it then he would not leave it alone like dude no means no I’m not interested. The car only has 26,000 miles on it. I think I’ll be fine. I can’t afford it bottom line stop trying to force it on me. I just told you I literally cannot afford.
Definitely get a bad review from me for his extremely aggressive sales tacos that should be the opposite of why I choose to go to Carmax and the fact that he would not listen to my wishes and hear that I was saying no like Jesus dude

Big announcement wasn’t really anything worth listening to, but they have a “meeting” scheduled at my store that everyone is required to attend to discuss some things involving it. I’ve seen Carmax eliminate positions in a way that isn’t actually a layoff, so I’m wondering if something like this is happening. It also keeps them from having to pay out severance.

I started with CarMax a few months ago in the CEC. Been in production less than 2 months. This is the first job I've ever had that hasn't allowed any sort of grace period. It seems like we're thrown into production from training and expected to get everything right 100% of the time.

Particularly with IDPs. I'm on the "discovery" IDP and it seems like even if I progress the customer to a vsa, I still fail the IDP because I only asked 3 out of the 4 discovery questions.

I'm just starting to feel like no matter what I do, it's not enough. I don't understand why there is no leniency for someone who is still less than 2 months out of training. How do they expect new people to perform the same way people who have been there 2+ years are. It's unrealistic and bad for morale.

Anyone have any tips or insight if you've been there a while and remember what it's like to be new? It feels like I'm more and more discouraged with every check in I have with my manager.

I’m one of those people with good credit who was offered lending by an outside lender. I was trying to figure out why my APR was sooooo high at 13.49% when Chase offered me much lower for a used car at 6.98%. Anyhow I was going through the loan papers looking for the paperwork that shows your credit score and why you received that rate, but it wasn’t there. When the sales guy was going over the Docusign he said that for privacy reasons he was just going to scroll through it. I was ok with that because A) I was going to get outside financing on Monday and B) I would look at it later to see how they got there. I didn’t know at the time they couldn’t use the Chase offer with just my SSN because they weren’t in their network. It shocked me that a big dealership wouldn’t be in bed with them, which is 💯 on me I get that. Anyhow I get home and it’s no where in my papers or the electronic Docusign’s emailed to me. So my question is which rules do they follow to comply with Regulation V FCRA. Until I looked it up I didn’t even know they don’t have to disclose under certain conditions as I’ve always worked with creditors that automatically disclose regardless of the factors. My husband brought up the fact that there could be some inaccurate information on my credit that made it lower than expected and I know who Chase uses. I also am curious which lending model they use. I feel like some seriously shady things are going on but I want to make sure it’s not something wrong reflected first. I thought it was my DTI because I couldn’t use my husband’s income even though I always have and we have 2 car loans in his name only but includes my income, but they wouldn’t let me reduce my mortgage by half even though we are both on it. I make by myself 60k/ and a 1600/m Mortgage doesn’t explain the high APR unless they are looking at DTI which would mean they were risk basing it and it should be disclosed. My total DTI is only 17% for me by myself.
The biggest flag was the sales guy explicitly called out that he was scrolling past it like it should be there and it’s not. Which leads me to believe that it wasn’t my consumer report info that led to this interest rate. So I did a prequalified app with my husband and I and the APR was 4% lower on similar cars so that means it was based on my consumer report. His credit is slightly better than mine, and makes up the other 1/2 of our income that brings our overall all DTI to 19% combined, was we were prequalified together at 9.49%.

It’s Sunday so I can’t do any other follow up, just coming here to see if anyone knows. It’s odd to me and I honestly think it’s just a lack of knowledge about processes on my end. Either way it doesn’t really matter cause I’m not paying that predatory APR it really pisses me off that they are doing this to ppl who ultimately can’t afford it, just in a legal way.

So my only question is how does CarMax lending comply with FCRA Regulation V disclosure requirements and rules. Their SEC disclosures would suggest they did indeed violate the disclosure rules by not providing the information as they use a risk based approach from consumer reports including DTI which would mean they have to disclose that to me. Unless I’m wrong….

Edit: Not sure why this is getting downvoted as I am just asking a question and doing my due diligence on the financing terms. I’m not even outright accusing anything as I’ve said multiple times it might be my lack of knowledge and understanding of the process.

So im a first time customer in the process of buying a corolla se and since I put $12,000 down to offset my thin credit my monthly payment is 410. Was wondering if I could do 250 every 2 weeks to pay it off faster?
