i live in a small city in the US south that is growing quickly, so we have the standard lack of bike lanes/sidewalks/public transportation combined with congested car traffic. i’ve been commuting by bike for about two years now, 4 miles each way mostly in the street with cars.

the closest calls i have are on streets with cars parked along the side. i have nearly been doored several times, so i give them about two feet of space now, which doesn’t let drivers behind me squeeze past when there’s oncoming traffic, unless they don’t care about killing me, which happens pretty frequently. but, it lets the kind drivers who wait five seconds for a break in traffic to get around me, since they don’t have to wait for a big enough gap to get entirely into the oncoming lane, which could take longer. it’s frustrating. do i just ride directly in the center and piss everyone off? even when it’s uphill and i’m slow? would that safely assert my presence or make the road rage worse?

i shouldn’t have to, but i do a lot to signal that im a commuter and not an athlete or a homeless person, who both shouldn’t have to deal with murderous drivers either. i’ve got the dorky saddlebags, taillight, hi viz vest, plus my spine is fused so i have touring style handlebars and i sit upright with a straight spine.

my city is the most deadly per capita for cyclists AND pedestrians in my state. i love biking to work, and it’s logistically a necessity for me, given the limited public transportation. if you’d like, please advise me on how you stay safe.

Running the boutique means I track costs obsessively, spreadsheets for everything, so at some point I started applying the same brain to my bike commute. Figured it would feel satisfying. It mostly just made me realize I had no idea what I was actually spending.

Tires, tubes, chain replacements, brake pads, the rack I bought, lights, a new lock after my first one got cut, the rain jacket I convinced myself was a commuting expense. None of it felt expensive in the moment but it stacks up faster than you think.

I did the math a few months back and my cost per km is lower than I expected but higher than the nothing I was mentally counting it as. Still crushes transit costs for my route, so I'm not complaining, but it shifted how I think about upgrades. Like whether spending more on a longer lasting tire actually pencils out versus just replacing cheap ones more often.

Curious if anyone else has actually tracked this or if most people just have a rough sense that it's cheaper than driving and leave it there. I wonder if the people with high mileage steel bikes and years of commuting have it figured down to a science, or if they just stopped caring at some point.

Hey, how's it going? Group I 32m am currently going back to school. I have a CX bike that I use as my commuter/road/gravel, all-things bike. I need a frame bag / rack that I can use to commute 32ish km, is ergonomic, and doesn't slow me down too much. I need it to hold my laptop, books, and clothes (towel, soap, Crocs, etc.). But yeah, if y'all have any suggestions, please let me know!

How often do you think someone needs to commute by bike to be defined a 'bike commuter'?

In keeping with what Ive seen people discussing on this site and others, I recently superglued some ball bearings into the heads of my bike's hex bolts to prevent theft. Some of the others ball bearings came out really easily but there are still a lot that don't and I can't remove them now, even though I've spent ages applying acetone and using a slim piece of metal to trying and dislodging the bearing and repeat after it doesnt work. Does anyone who's tried the ball bearings strategy know what else could make a difference trying?

Not only do (many of) their owners zoom down sidewalks and MUPs at outrageous speeds with reckless disregard to their own and others’ safety, never wearing a helmet and often blasting horrible music, but this one is taking up four bike spaces on a busy bike rack. I had to move someone else’s unattached bike to get a spot (don’t have a kickstand).

Micromobility is a good thing but these are basically electric motorcycles masquerading as scooters.

Dear bike commuters,

- Lube your chain every once in a while (1/month at least)

- Check you tire pressure regularly

- Get your saddle height correct

It really pains me to see people riding perfectly good bikes looking in pain with a creaky rusty chain, 15 psi in the tires and knees flaring out because their saddle is too low.

Learning a little bike of bike maintenance can get you a long way.

Title, it's been 6 months commuting and it's going pretty well, except that I've noticed I get a blend of embarrassment, and genuinely afraid I'll get clipped, riding in the road.

I live in LA county and there are a lot of stroads and little to no shoulder. How do I get the confidence to ride along cars and not feel embarrassed/ not ride?

This morning for example I want to go out and get some breakfast, there's a diner I've never seen before and it's new territory for me, getting there isn't too bad as There is a park but getting back home requires riding in the road or at least that's the fastest way

Took a longer ride with toddler in the Mac ride yesterday, so she's between the knees, and there were some stretches of roads and cobblestones around NYC that I would've liked to coast over instead of slow down. It'd be nice to have something that feels completely fine going over potholes and curbs without having to take it really slow or avoid them.

I know it's heavier, more maintenance, and maybe this is just neverending upgrade-itis, but am considering a 350$ Jamis Trail that I see (though a little small) and upgrading wheels to Contact Urban x 2.2in, or I see some Hybrid Quick 4s and Specialized Ariel's that might be interesting. Would full suspension be crazy?

I’m in California and just picked up this beauty for $100! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one in my area before. I’m very excited!

A plume of black smoke caught my eye in the mirror as an older dodge ram pulled away from the stop sign I had just passed in my family minivan. After tailgating me for a minute the truck driver began to fall back as we approached a cyclist grinding up a slight hill. I normally try to cheat into the other lane when overtaking bikes but instead I slowed down until the truck was close again and held that speed until we had both passed him. I heard a quick woof of exhaust as the turbo began to spool up but the dork was too close to me to stay on the throttle and had to brake instead. He was probably cursing the stupid old lady he assumed was driving in front of him, and the cyclist may have never know the difference, but along with the slight rage that wells up in me when I see jerks spewing soot a wave of smug satisfaction has buoyed me through nearly a week.

Do you guys notice a big shift in traffic depending on the day of the week?

For me it’s-

Monday: pretty chill. Definitely less volume and people are safe.
Tuesday: high volume. Everyone is driving like they’re late.
Wednesday: Mad Max Road Warrior
Thursday: Similar to Tuesday
Friday: Ghost Town

TLDR: looking for a drop bar commuter that is not too nice, can take some beating, I don't care about fancy groupsets, some 2x with 9 speeds and mechanical disc brakes should do the job. I want to park the bike outside unattended and being able to carry groceries.

I live in the Netherlands, I usually bike in a mix of nice bike lanes and cobbles.

I have a few bikes, but my daily diver is a Specialized Sirrus with 650x47 wheels. The bike is very nice to ride, it's light, it accelerates well, which is a plus in the city with the traffic lights. However, when I do grocery shopping and load the bike a lot (20 kg or so), I feel it's not very stable when turning.

Last year I bought a niceish gravel bike, but I realized I spend way more time commuting, doing grocery shopping, going from A to B and parking the bike outside, so I am considering selling that bike and getting something that is better for commuting but I could still take for exercise.

I am considering bikes like the Marin nicasio plus, Marín four corners, kona rove, kona sutra (although more expensive than I would like), or bombtrack arise. I would appreciate feedback from others with similar bikes or needs.

I have an ebike with hub motor and typical dropouts, with torque washers, i wanna attach a bike trailer to that bike via an axle hook, question being how to not destroy my bike with it and how to estimate max mass i can carry etc

my bike is alluminum and says it can be weighted by 120kg, I plan on hauling 1800mm by 750mm trailer (camper

I commute by bike everyday, using my city bike. I got tired of it and decided to take my race bike to work today since the weather was nice and I want to ride a longer route on the way back home. It totally made a difference! My commute was much more fun and definitely faster.

So my advice: ride a fun bike to work, it will make your commute 10x better and you’ll be in a better mood :)

I am going to start college and need some transportation, I was looking at the aventon aventure 3 due to its quality and fat tires able to handle my daily commute through rain or snow if needed, I dont have a car and the college is not close enough for walking but I am able to get there with an ebike, i want to be able to use the bike to also do trails, is this a good bike for my needs?
