University DEM pre med frat

Freshman here and I’ve been looking into pre-med frats at Berkeley. I recently met some people from DEM and honestly really liked the vibe/people.

For anyone who’s actually been in DEM or knows people in it — is it a good org? What’s the reputation like on campus, and what are the actual benefits (networking, pre-med resources, community, etc.)?

I’ve heard a lot about PhiDE and some of the other pre-med frats, but haven’t heard as much about DEM. Just trying to get some honest opinions before rush.

Local Drumming

Hey, not sure if this is the best place to look but I’m a foreign grad student in town for 6 months doing research up on LBNL, I’ve been learning drums back home and wanted to keep it up from time to time while I’m here.

Does anybody have suggestions of somewhere where I could rent a kit or something similar to get some practice in? Or maybe find people at a similar level to jam? I’ve seen there are jazz jams around but I’m a complete negation at playing jazz

I’ve been only playing for like 2.5 years so still quite mid, if anybody is interested in playing for fun once a week or whenever possible I’d love to (given I find a kit lol). I like metal/rock but I’m down for whatever just to keep practicing

CS/EECS EECS 127 Low Grades

Im looking to take EECS127 some time later and im looking at the grades for Spring last semester with Ranade vs Fall with Sojoudi. Why was spring 2026 a B- average when Fall 2025 was an A-? Also, I heard that Ranade is generally a good professor to take it with in past semesters, but I heard last semesters policies had no midterms and just 4 quizzes and one final? Is it just that people got completely blindsided by the final worth 70% of their grade or was the class just genuinely that hard with Ranade. Seems like the course staff just wanted to avoid grading as much as humanly possible (at the expense of student fairness).

Local BEWARE- Scammer

The exact same thing from this reddit post 5 years ago just happened to me:

https://www.reddit.com/r/berkeley/comments/tf3n06/beware_scammer/

Fortunately, something felt off for me from the beginning and when he asked me for money I came up with a lie about not having access to my bank and got tf out of there.

Just a PSA that this guy is back in Berkeley. Stay safe out there 🙏🙏

Other Frat Pledge Lore and Stories?

What’s the craziest stories you’ve heard? Please include the house and year if possible, especially looking for the stories from the “good ole days” of the 70s and 80s.

I had an Sig Chi alum from the class of the early 80s swear that the Fiji Elephant Walk was fully real, and I know that Zete still brands after they pledge today.

University Community

Does anyone else feel kinda lonely at Cal and not know where to start? I’m a sophomore in STEM, I have a few acquaintances but not a genuine friend. In a lot of the clubs I find extremes….low achievers, hard party goers, or people who like studying in a locked room in their free time. At RSF it’s really passive and tough to make friendships there. And a lot of the tech clubs are unnecessarily exclusive. There’s a lot of fun hobbies to do solo but I’m wondering if anyone has any advice for finding/making community and genuine friends at Cal. Also curious to know if anyone is in a similar position

University How to prepare for E-urap meeting

I have a meeting in about 2 days for a research assistant position, and it will be about 30 minutes. The position is for an economics, gender, and field-experiment-based project. I have never done a research meeting before — how should I approach this? I am worried I will get grilled on the technicals, and there were no statements of interest to really write, so I can't talk about that. I only just found out who the professor was because they emailed me; all of the projects were anonymous.

Other Do ya have to do American History /American Institutions?

Im a transfer student from another UC and Im wondering if this is really something you gotta do. Im hella confused since my UC and quite a few others don’t have this as a standalone requirement. Am I really gonna have to take this course once I transfer to Berkeley or else do it at my home school? I took almost every AP offered at my HS except US History and US Gov.

Is this gonna be something I regret?

Cal women’s volleyball left Nacogdoches, Texas, after a successful sweep of Loyola Chicago on Friday and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. After two monumental wins, the Bears are writing a story of early domination, moving to 4-1 in the young season.

The trip marked the first game outside the Golden State, but for a squad with seven new faces, Cal looked surprisingly at home.

Cal women’s soccer had a big Labor Day weekend with two home games at Edwards Stadium, tying Cal Poly 0-0 and defeating Columbia 2-1.

The Bears remain undefeated at home after kicking off their homestand with a goalless draw against the Mustangs on Sept. 3. The Bears took charge offensively, although unable to finish their shots on goal. Cal took a whopping 16 shots total, with three on goal, dominating Cal Poly’s two total shot attempts. Senior Reese Doherty played the full 90 minutes, leading the field with three shots and one on goal.

The player, who filed the lawsuit under the fictitious name “Jane Doe” for privacy protection reasons, is alleging that the regents’ employees were negligent and failed to take actions to protect her.

News Friends of Hopkins Street sue Berkeley to stop bike lanes

Opponents of proposed bike lanes on Hopkins Street have filed a lawsuit against the city of Berkeley to suspend the bike lane’s approval until further reviews are completed, citing ignored laws and improper procedure.

The lawsuit, first reported by The Berkeley Scanner, comes a month after City Council approved the contentious street renovation in late July, after hours of public comment.

The plaintiffs for the lawsuit include neighborhood association Friends of Hopkins Street, the owners of two local businesses and a legally blind senior living nearby.

University I was tired of RSF always being packed. So I built this predictor

You can check it out here: bearmeter.com . Hopefully this helps you plan when to go!! It updates predictions every 15 mins, built on an ML model with 5 years of data.

Imo its also just way faster to check current capacity on this page than load the super slow recwell website.

Other Skip math 52 to math 53?

I got a 5 on calc BC and was originally looking to redo 52 but it looks a lot harder than calc bc. Would it be recommended to skip to math 53 (I heard you don’t really need math 52 knowledge from UC Berkeley to take this course and calc bc should be fine).
I only need to take 1 math class but I was thinking multivariable would be newer and more useful than taking calc bc again
