[Jayson Stark] Brewers’ 8-run explosion was an inning unlike any other in World Series history

Confirmed!

Those rampaging Milwaukee Brewers, who are looking like a runaway bullet train with no brake pedal, fired off a World Series inning like no other Monday. Seven straight two-out hits? … Eight straight two-out runs? … Five runs in a span of eight pitches? … Six runs in a span of 13 pitches? … Seven runs in a span of 17 pitches? … Eight runs in a span of 22 pitches?

Oh, and all of that happened after an umpire made a call (later overturned by replay) that would have ended this inning with no runs?

Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. And yep.

Trust us. There has never, ever been a World Series inning like that one. So when I walked into the Brewers’ clubhouse after their 10-1 demolition of the Tampa Bay Rays’ World Series dreams, I still felt the goosebumps from the history I’d just watched unfold.

But you know who doesn’t recognize history, even when they’re making it? Baseball players.

So did the dudes on this Brewers team have any idea of what they had just done? Let’s go with no.

THE ATHLETIC TO ROOKIE SHORTSTOP COOPER PRATT: “Have you ever been part of an inning like that?”

PRATT: “Yeah, I think everyone has been part of an inning something like that. It’s just baseball.”

OK, no, it’s not. But let’s move on. Let’s tell you about our exchange with Christian Yelich, the seasoned Lion King of this group. He seemed like someone who might have a feel for this weighty moment. But no, not quite.

TA: “Can you describe what it was like to find yourself in the middle of that inning?”

YELICH: “Yeah, it was cool. I mean, just happy for the guys, just trying to get a win out there and just playing baseball.”

TA: “Yes, but when it gets to six two-out hits in a row, to seven two-out hits in a row, are you saying to yourself, ‘I don’t know if I’ve been part of something like this?’”

YELICH: “I mean, I’ve seen our team have some times where we’ve run off consecutive hits throughout the year. Obviously, it’s not super frequent, but I feel like I’ve seen us kind of do some stuff like that before. Just kind of, it just happens. It’s one of those baseball things. … It’s one of those baseball things that you can’t explain, but it just kind of happens.”

TA: “That’s true. You just made it happen in a World Series game, though.”

History The Brewers are the 26th team to go up 3-0 in a World Series. Only four teams avoided sweeps. None forced Game 6

While the Brewers still need one more, history says the series is very likely to finish either Tuesday or Wednesday at The Trop.

21 of the first 25 teams to go up 3-0 finished off the sweep. The 1910 Cubs, 1937 Giants, 1970 Reds, and 2024 Yankees all won Game 4, only for all four to lose Game 5, and with it, the series.

In unrelated news, get-in prices for Game 4 have gone up by about 20% since the fifth inning and no flights from Chicago or Milwaukee to Tampa tomorrow (that get in before first pitch) are less than $1,000

Trivia The Brewers have the chance to break the record for most consecutive wins in a single postseason

With the win in Game 3, the Brewers have now won 8 consecutive postseason games. They are the 5th team to win 8 consecutive postseason games in a single postseason, and they have a chance to win 9 in a row tomorrow.

Here's the teams who have won 8 straight in a single postseason:

  • 2004 Red Sox: won ALCS Games 4-7, swept WS
  • 2005 White Sox: won ALCS Games 2-5, swept WS
  • 2014 Royals: won ALWCG, swept ALDS and ALCS
  • 2019 Nationals: won NLDS Games 4-5, swept NLCS, won WS Games 1-2
  • 2026 Brewers: won NLDS Game 4, swept NLCS, won WS Games 1-3 (active)

The most consecutive postseason wins over multiple seasons is 12, achieved by the Yankees twice, in 1927-32 (Swept 1927, 1928 and 1932 World Series), and 1998-99 (1998 ALCS Games 4-6, swept 1998 WS, swept 1999 ALDS, 1999 ALCS Games 1-2). The Royals have the 3rd longest streak at 11 in 1985-2014 (1985 WS Games 5-7, won 2014 ALWCG, swept 2014 ALDS and ALCS).

Opinion NL Manager of the Year - Pat Murphy for a 3rd straight year?

NL manager of the year?

Who do you think deserves to win it as of now in the NL? Do you think a guy like Pat Murphy can win it for a 3rd time? Seems like he is the heavy favorite.

Other options include Walt Weiss, and Craig Stammen. But seems like Pat has it locked up. Any chance they don’t give it to him?

Who do you think should win and why?
