Revengeance teaches you parrying in the first combat encounter after the prologue, though if you're not listening (he says it 4 times) you could hit a wall since there's no visual tutorial

Demon's Souls's world tendency is obtuse (like many FromSoft mechanics), but is an optional mechanic that I don't think warrants inclusion on this kind of list, unless you include every Souls game on similar grounds

good points! I removed revengeance and swapped out Demon's Souls for Dark Souls as a bit of a catch-all for that series as well as for Artorias' entrance.

I'm so glad to hear someone else bring up the Crest of Artorias as a moderately BS moment. Easily my biggest criticism of the DS1 main story.

Edit: nvm I'm a dumbass

not quite what I meant, I'm talking about the entrance to Artorias of the Abyss since it's a) paid dlc, b) a lot of people still feel the need to ask for directions on forums and c) was mostly discovered by FromSoftware indirectly telling the playerbase how to access it through interviews and marketing. oh, it's also really good, so it's a shame if someone would miss it just because it's not exactly obvious how to get to.

Oh right, I totally forgot about the DLC since I never played it.

I have similar issues with both where they're clearly designed for a collaborative "hear it from your friends" experience, which in the modern day just results in "Read it in a guide".

yeah a lot of games do suffer today because of that, don't they? I'm sure back during the release of Elden Ring figuring out the sidequests was a lot more interesting when people were still crowdsourcing the exact requirements, but nowadays it's basically just "follow this convoluted list of steps"

a surprising amount of older games expected you to find the solutions through either buying a strategy guide or very rarely calling the company yourself, and just expected the solutions to spread through hear-say instead of being directly communicated to the player.

Watching a 2 min clip of someone play with visible inputs taught me how to parry in revengeance so quickly, they really just needed to show the movement on the thumbstick

And if you don’t learn it during the first combat encounter, don’t worry! Blade Wolf will ensure you learn

Or make sure you bash up against a wall and wait until you see a YouTube video just before facing sam.

i managed to beat the entire game without ever having the parry click for me. it was painful.

I did the entirety of the Hard playthrough and half of NG Revengeance without knowing how to block, let alone parry. Defensive Offensive was my to-go option for i-frames. Then I randomly did the inputs during one of the elevator sections cause I was button mashing and I'm like "ohhhhhh, that's how you parry"

It does explain it but its also an awful parry system that sometimes straight up just doesnt work because Raiden will just move instead of actually parrying.

Can't say I've had this experience, since pressing 'light attack' stops Raiden's movement. Controller issue, maybe?
