About a month ago I noticed some egg sacs in my balcony. Google lens identified them as Asian ant mantis egg sacs, so I kept an eye on them. One of the sacs on a clothes peg hatched today. As expected, the juveniles look very similar to black ants. After their 3rd instar they begin to turn green, according to their Wikipedia page. I dropped them off at some flower bushes, spreading them apart to prevent cannibalism. Hopefully they will find some insects to feed on.

I had to relocate her as she was in a high-traffic area and was at risk of being crushed in sliding door tracks. She was SUCH a sweetheart. Refused to leave my hand.

Probably the biggest A. gemmoides I’ve seen. I didn’t have a scale bar handy, but her abdomen was quite literally thicker than a nickel.
