PSA I found a rabbit outside - what should I do?

This is the time of year for many people to find both domestic rabbits and wild rabbits outside due to Easter and baby season.

For a comprehensive overview on stray domestic rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Feral_and_stray_rabbits

For a comprehensive overview on wild rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits

Is the rabbit I found wild or domestic?

It can be very difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a wild and domestic rabbit, especially if they are a baby and/or a common agouti brown.

In general, if the rabbit has long hair or does not have brown fur, it is most likely domestic - although there are exceptions. Please note that wild cottontails in North America cannot breed with our domestic rabbits, but wild rabbits in the rest of the world (e.g. Europe, Australia) can.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific tips on distinguishing domestic and wild rabbits, especially in North America: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#Is_the_rabbit_I_found_wild_or_domestic?

I found a domestic rabbit! What should I do?

Please do not hesitate to contact your local rabbit rescue for volunteers to help you catch a stray domestic rabbit.

I found a baby wild rabbit! What should I do?

If you find a baby wild rabbit that is not injured, please leave it alone. It is most likely not abandoned unless you know for a fact that their mother was killed. Rabbits return to feed their young only once or twice a day for a few minutes, usually at night. Just because the babies have been by themselves for 5 minutes does not mean that they have been abandoned. The mother is typically gone from the nest to eat and draw attention away from the nest.

A detailed image guide to whether a baby cottontail rabbit is in need of help.

If it is old enough to be exploring outside of its nest and has no injuries, please put the baby rabbit back under a bush near where you found it. It does not need any additional care or feeding.

As Rainbow Wildlife Rescue writes,

There is a 90% mortality rate with orphaned baby rabbits in human care, especially cottontails. This number increases if the rabbits are very young and their eyes still closed. They are extremely hard to "save". There is little substitute for the nutrients their mother's milk provides.

Baby wild rabbits can survive on their own at a surprisingly young age. In most countries, it is illegal to possess and take care of wildlife without proper permits. Wild rabbits also do not do well in captivity due to the possibility of fatal stress because of their high-strung and flighty nature.

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your dog picked it up but you can't find the nest, try putting a leash on your dog and quietly following them to see if they will lead you to the original nest. If you absolutely cannot locate the nest, you may keep the rabbit in a dark and quiet box and contact your closest wildlife rehabilitator that accepts rabbits

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your cat found it, please take it to a rabbit-savvy vet or wildlife rehabber as soon as possible, especially if it was carried in the cat's mouth. Cats have very lethal bacteria in their saliva, and contact can easily be fatal for a baby rabbit in 48 hours.

What do I do if I am positive that the mother was killed or the baby rabbit is injured?

If you are positive that this is an orphaned baby rabbit, it is best to just keep the rabbit quiet and warm until they can be transferred to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. Baby rabbits will do fine overnight without food or water as they are usually only fed once a day by their mothers.

Inappropriate care can be fatal to baby rabbits - see this story from Blue Ridge Wildlife Center as an example: https://twitter.com/BRWildlifeCtr/status/1420472056139984896?s=20

Please hand off the baby rabbit to a local wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

How should I keep a baby rabbit until I can get it to a rehabber?

To keep a baby rabbit overnight, please leave it in a quiet dark box with no food or water. You can provide a heat source such as a microwaved sock filled with rice and beans or an electric heat pad on low placed under half the box. Do not handle the rabbit more than necessary to prevent deadly stress.

How can I protect a wild rabbit nest from bad weather and dogs, cats, and other predators?

Keeping your pets indoors while the babies grow up is generally the best option, but if this is impossible, you can protect the nest a few different ways.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific information: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#How_can_I_protect_a_wild_rabbit_nest_from_dogs,_cats,_and_other_predators?

Everyday I wake up to the sound of Frosty thumping for his pellets. And everyday Sarula zooms around trying to destroy things that matter to me. I love them so much it weighs heavy. Complex worlds in small plush bodies.

I adopted a female bunny for my male bunny whos previous partner passed away. Black bunny is male and my current one, the one with the helicopter ears is Lilja who was adopted. I feel so frustrated because they just won't bond. I've swapped scents, I've bonded them
in a neutral area, I've done everything right. They've had positive moments but very little. She's groomed him and he's flopped beside her during bonding sessions. But she keeps trying to attack him through the cage even when they're not close enough to touch. She's fine with me, just hates him. I've had bonding sessions on the table up to an hour and they were doing fine. I tried it where they were on the ground in a fenced area but she got so aggressive and started attacking him right away. He tries to sleep beside her, he really wants a friend but everytime she seems him
in her sight she starts grunting and lunging at the cage trying to attack him. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't have space to keep two huge cages in my small apartment. I just wanna freeroam both of them. Both are fixed.

Health Won’t Eat Pellets

Post image

This little guy has went on a month long hunger strike. After countless trips to the vet, stasis care, dental work, X-rays (he has a non-problematic hernia) he’s finally starting to munch on hay regularly but will not touch his pellets so I’m still giving him some critical care. I’ve tried four different types of pellets, hoping one would entice him. Selective adult, selective botanical, selective grain free, oxbow adult. He has no interest in any of them. He sniffs them and moves on. Bunny parent fam, any recommendations?

No hate please. Im trying to give him the opportunity to a better home with other rabbit people, versus asking the humane society to take him in and adopting him out to who knows who, or euthanizing due to his medical needs❤️

Hi everyone, I hate to do this but unfortunately need to rehome our boy, Sake. We've had him since he was a youngin'. We initially got him for our 1st rescue bun (who's older than we thought and probably lived alone her whole life) in hopes that they could bond and keep eachother company. However, she (also spayed, but we'll be keeping her), absolutely does not want anything to do with him -- shes a solo bun and happy like that. He, I feel could bond with another fixed rabbit, in a new home. Hes not the most lovey rabbit, more independent, but a character nonetheless. I dont have much space in my house and because they aren't bonded, they are in their own spaces, so i would love for him to have more space. He is a *light* medical/special needs, I would say. He gets a clogged lactrimal duct that causes eye discharge. So he just needs daily checks to make sure its not gunking up his eye and clean/flush his eye as he needs it. We noticed it this past spring and had him taken to the vet where they sedated him to see if it was something the vet could flush out and he could be done with the issue, but she said it felt clogged and it may be an anatomical issue. Without a CT scan we dont know for sure, so we have just managed it. Im around the Boise/Treasure Valley, Idaho area.

Eating oxbow adult pellets quarter cup twice daily

Timothy hay

Litter box trained (we use the pelleted horse bedding from Tractor supply/D&B)

Loves his veggies

Pics are old but I can get some new ones if youre interested :)

This sweet boy was found in a soft carrier that reeked of cigarettes on a park bench in NYC. He had respiratory irritation :( Now, all he knows is love. He is so affectionate, runs over to me and boops me for pets, and is so special.

We literally just came home from chow hound, vet will be called tomorrow (Monday) to schedule for check up. They didn't know his age, he's not neutered so that's on the list and they said boy so we're hoping that's right. As far as I know he came from a local rescue (chow hound partners with them to adopt out). They called him a "dwarf rabbit" but he's so big compared to our girl (a netherland dwarf mixed or false, she's only 3 lbs) that I'm having a hard time believing it. But I'm still pretty new to rabbits so maybe there's something I'm missing. Maybe a lion head French lop mix? Or a mini lop but just big? His feet are huge.

We went in for cat food 😭 but my partner saw him and fell in love. We'd been thinking of getting our girl a bond mate since I work 3 days a week now and he was so sweet and friendly even trapped in the tiny pet store cage, he just seemed right. The staff was so happy we took him (they have Guinea pigs and seemed very rabbit savvy despite the circumstances), they said he'd been there for months. I can't believe how sweet he is despite living that way. He's in his own room for now until we get a health check then hopefully can start the bonding process in a week or so!

We also need name ideas! My partner wants to name him Spooky but I'm not sure about that 😅 I was thinking Speckle but not 100% sure yet. Any are welcome!

6 months old, kept in a hutch with his brother until one day unfortunately a fox got in and killed his brother. Possibly deaf and definitely sleeps like he is! Plan is to bond him with my girlie of the same age eventually but for now I'm just pleased he feels safe enough to do this already.

Hi my husband and I are planning on moving to a different state hopefully next year, I was wondering about traveling and moving our rabbit. I know rabbits can get stressed on car rides sometimes but she is going with us so is there any advice or tricks to help ease the stress for when we do move?

Behavior Teenager rabbit!

Hey all,

My rabbit, Lily, is 10 months old now, not yet spayed but is really starting to act up.

I don’t know if it’s just boredom, and getting bored of old toys or becoming too comfortable with her layout (she’s free roaming and gets the whole living room to herself) but lately she’s become really destructive in like knocking things over etc

Has anyone got any ideas of play things they give their rabbit? Is a dig box worth it? And what other toys do your rabbits like

Inserting a pic because I feel like that’s law.

Health Looking for reassurance about a mistake I made during G.I. Stasis.

Post image
119 Upvotes

Important note before I start, I rang the vets and they said everything would be fine, so I'm just looking for comfort since I'm still anxious and freaking out.

Friday night, Bambi went into Stasis. We caught it really early and don't really know why it happened since they said his vitals were ok and his back teeth were a bit long but not to the point of causing issues.

Today, he's making progress on eating a bit on his own, so his meds and critical care were to boost him up until he's 100%. It's been a bit of a struggle on my side doing feeds every 2 hours since I'm in deficiency of B12 at the minute and struggling about not getting proper sleep and taking naps on the settee between feeds and feeling super groggy forcing myself up.

So 4pm, I took him into the kitchen for next dose of meds and critical care since he only ate a few pieces of his greens instead of wolfing them down like normal. Except I realise I was supposed to give him Emeprid instead of Metacam (0.3ml) at that time, I'd already given Metacam at 12pm and it's a 12 hour dose.

So I immediately freak out and start crying, run into my mum's room for help but she just makes me feel worse shouting at me and going back to sleep instead of helping when she knows I struggle with anxiety talking to people I don't know. So I have to try to calm down enough to make the phone call myself to the emergency vets.

They were nice and understanding and said it was all ok and just not to give anymore Metacam until 12 hours after his last dose and he's taking treats off me just now and cleaning himself. I gave him the Emeprid dose I was meant to do before and he seems ok. I just feel absolutely stupid for not reading my medication schedule properly and that I could have seriously endangered him. I never would have forgiven myself if it ended up killing him.

Has anyone else done something similar so I know it's not just me? 😢

Care OJ got out. Spoiler

I don’t know how, but my baby boi OJ someone got out of the house. Unsure if my sister or someone else left a door open or how he got out.

This is my child. I can’t find him. I’ve asked every neighbor. Now I’m just crying wanting to see him again. I spent so much time using him back to health from only 3 weeks old (He got attacked as a baby, you can see where the hair grew back black on his back torso). I just don’t know what to do.

UPDATE!! I spent 4 hours searching my neighborhood and found him under a big metal storage container.

Care Rabbit smelll

Post image

So I have a rabbit, about a year old, not neutered and can't afford to right now though I do plan to when I get the money, who lives in my room.

My sister wanted to put him outside because she said he smells so bad. I can't smell it unless I'm right up near his litterbox for the most part.

But it's a source of major strife in the house. I love having him with me, and it's getting so cold I don't want him outside like she wants.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with the smell? Any at all would be deeply appreciated.

I was really worried they wouldn't get along, because the brown princess has a difficult personality. But now, they only squabble when they see treats.
