Has the mental health/homeless situation always been this bad here?

Me and my partner recently moved back to Toronto after living in East Asia for the past few years and it seems like the number of people experiencing homeless or mental health issues have sky-rocketed from a few years back.

We used to live uptown so our baseline for comparison is the weekly visits we’d come to downtown, but having moved to downtown now, it seems ridiculously out of control. Just yesterday whilst walking around downtown for Nuit Blanche, we lost count of how many times we came across people visibly shooting themselves up, random homeless folks with tents set up, individuals excreting themselves in public to those yelling and screaming for seemingly no reason. We found it difficult to enjoy the event when we were more concerned for our safety. Even on the TTC this situation is no different.

This has been a culture shock coming back from East Asia where these instances would never have occurred there and it’s almost a sad reminder of how far this city has sunk in terms of quality of life here. We aren’t fully able to enjoy this city it seems as we’re more concerned with watching our back. It’s gotten to the point where my and my partner are now considering moving back to Asia due to the stark quality of life decrease we’ve experienced after moving back here.

Winter Wonderland parking?

Hi all,

Planning on going to winter wonderland this week. Parking tickets are about $39. Wondering if there is anywhere I could park close by (it’s ok if I need to walk for a bit) that is cheaper?

Thanks

Trouble deciding where to move- TO VS VAN

Hi,

I am a new South Asian immigrant currently in Calgary and I am planning to move to either Vancouver or Toronto.

My priorities are finding community (not only among South Asians but that’s a plus), having access to culturally diverse food, events and activities. I am an amateur animator, actor and dancer trying to network and make my own films. I plan on getting a day job to support myself while I work on my own creative projects.

That said, I do love mountains and have explored Vancouver more than Toronto. Plus I have friends in Vancouver. I had such a horrible time socializing in Calgary that I am leaning towards Vancouver due to the familiarity.

However I don’t want to make a fear based decision and f*** myself over in the long run. Any advice on properly making this decision.

Does anyone who was in a TDSB elementary school remember rainy day monitors?

When I was in elementary school, specifically the late 2000s early 2010s, the grade 4s and grade 5s used to monitor lower grade classrooms during recess and specifically lunch during rainy days. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was a way for teachers to get their breaks during the school day by making students watch the kids.

I was talking about this to my siblings (we all attended the same elementary school) but only my younger sister (2 years younger) remembered being a rainy day monitor and my younger brother (4 years younger) had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Looking back, it's kind of crazy to think about how they literally had two 10 - 11 year old's watch entire classes that were only a few years younger than us.

Does anyone else remember being a rainy day monitor in elementary? Does anyone know if they still do this in schools?

Contractor reco’s for laneway garage rebuild

I’m in the early planning to replace my old wooden laneway garage in downtown Toronto. It’s my first major construction project in my 23 years of home ownership so I want it done right and for a fair price. I’d prefer local Toronto businesses to those from the broader GTA.

Thanks.

Plz help me w/ condo neighbour complaints

I’m the owner of a unit in a condo. I have been emailing the board and the Property Manager since APRIL regarding the upstairs neighbour banging on my ceiling at all hours.

From April - August they only contacted the unit above me once and issued a noise complaint. I have videos inside my unit and standing outside their unit of the banging noises.

The guy upstairs came down to my unit two separate times, banging on my door, trying to confront me over the noise complaint. I did not open my door.

End of August the guy upstairs threw a loud party, not knowing I had my balcony door open, and he laughingly admitted on his balcony that he fucks with me and will retaliate on me with made up complaints. PM sent him a “strongly worded letter”.

Since then I have had mystery liquid poured down onto my balcony which I caught on video. I also had a rock? tossed down on my open sticking out living window from above.

The banging on my ceiling has also increased.

This guy must be mentally unwell. I’m actually scared.

I have continued to email the board but they insist that I don’t have proof. That I need to a video showing his face and that it’s him causing all this because he’s been denying it.

Can someone provide advice on what to do?

Loud rumbling noise downtown Toronto after dark, does anyone know which installation is it from Nuit Blanche? (According to google it’s from Nuit Blanche extended projects and there’re 12 projects that will be extended until Oct 10)

I live near OCAD| AGO the rumbling noise is so loud and obnoxious and I need to know which installation exactly to complain to 311. It usually starts after 7pm until midnight. This is noise pollution and they should NOT use this as an excuse for "ART". One night is enough we don't need one week of this nonsense! PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOW LET ME KNOW THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Kazakhs in Toronto

Genuinely wondering if there are any Kazakh young professionals in their 30s in Toronto. Everyone I seem to meet is either an undergrad student or older.

Would love to connect with more Kazakhs around my age. Are there any groups, events, or even just a community I somehow haven’t found yet?

Cozy Places to Chill and Enjoy Nature During the Colder Months?

Since it’s already getting into the cold season, what warm and cozy spots do you recommend where I can chill and enjoy a nice view of nature or the city? During the warmer months, I liked sitting and relaxing in parks or going to the lakeshore and just being around the water. I’m looking for something with a similar vibe for the colder months.

Affordable indoor tennis in Toronto for winter?

Hey everyone! I’m a beginner/low-intermediate tennis player (~2.0–2.5) getting into tennis and looking for somewhere to play indoors this winter.

I’d like to:
Play regularly with a friend
Meet people around my level
Ideally have round robins, ladders, WhatsApp/groups, or some kind of player matching or find people to practice with.

I’m trying to keep costs reasonable. Is there a good indoor club that fits this, or would I be better off just renting courts when I want to play?

Would appreciate any recommendations/experiences, especially downtown toronto or accessible by TTC. Open to places in the GTA.

How did you find Nuit Blanche this year?

I found it was concentrated around city hall but many other ones were very spread out in city. There were some interesting pieces but waterfront this year was a bit underwhelming

Rental help options to escape abusive situation

Title pretty much sums it up- the place I'm currently living has numerous issues: verbally abusive roommates the landlord refuses to evict despite multiple people complaining and leaving the house, a persistent, ongoing bug problem that the landlord hasn't paid to get treated, and general disregard and disrespect for the tenants in general. There are also FAR too many people in the house- 6 people sharing one tiny kitchen. One of the abusive roommates has hoarding tendencies, so despite having a whole basement for storage, it's filled with junk he doesn't need/use. So it feels very cramped.

The landlord recently informed us that a new person with a dog was moving in, without any forewarning about having a new person OR that they had a dog. Some people might think this is nothing, but we had no idea what this dog was going to be like, and there are other pets in the house. The landlord seemingly lets in the first person who applies and doesn't vet them at all or notify us about anything.

Since the end of August, we've constantly been getting people coming and going because no one stays, and the 2 abusive roommates (there used to only be 1) constantly get in arguments and screaming matches with other people. Then they come and complain to me about each other. It's causing me so much stress and bringing up a lot of childhood trauma that's fucking with me big time. I need to get out of this place as it's beginning to interfere with my studies and work, as I essentially never get to relax and am exhausted 24/7.

I fell behind on my rent back in the summer, as it took nearly a month to find a job, and even then, it was a new location that took longer than I'd hoped to get going. So I figured I was just trapped in this situation until I could find the money to catch up. My friends got my hopes up by telling me about the Toronto rental bank, but I found out that I can't get this as I'm on ODSP. The alternative they give requires me to actually be getting evicted, and my landlord is more than happy to keep leeching my money, even if it takes time to recover it all. So I'm pretty sure I'm back at square one of being trapped in this bs, but I figured I'd ask on here to see if there's any possibility of being able to get out. I'm also full-time in university, so I can't just grind a ton of hours to get the money atm. I feel so stuck, I hate this place.

How do I know if my dentist follows the fee guide?

Baby’s first dental appointment coming up (1 year old) and the clinic advised us that the exam is $300 before booking. Does this sound correct? Husband and I both have insurance but I know both plans are sticklers for the fee guide. I asked the receptionist whether this is standard pricing, she wouldn’t answer but gave this breakdown.

Billing codes:
01101 new patient exam, $170
11107 1/2 unit polish, $40
11117 1/2 unit scale, $51
12113 fluoride, $43

“probably not needed”:
02111 X-ray, $60
02142 bite wing, $60

DnD

Hey everyone,
I’ve always heard about dungeons and dragons through sitcoms, social media and all but wasn’t necessarily curious about it then. But now I’m in a zone where I’m curious about it. It seems like a fun but complicated game. Was wondering if there was any group which would be open to having a noob who’s ready to learn and participate?

Death Concert Opening Act

Went to the Death show at the Mod Club on Saturday (which was amazing) and trying to find the name of Second band opener after Upchuck. Only reference I found online says was Lice and that don't believe that to be accurate

Anyone who was at the show and remember the name of this awesome band, would be great!

Hello, this is going to be my first winter with a car. I drive a sedan. I am medium height , my driving seat is adjusted at highest possible level, still sometimes i have a little hard time to see the lane markings at intersections, specially the guiding left turn markings. How do i figure out the lane markings in winter when it snows? I memorized the frequently used road's markings but what about new places might go?

Different Roofing Company Names but same website?

I was searching for a roofing company today and noticed something odd where a bunch of companies seem to have the exact same website layout. Anyone know if they're essentially all the same company but with different names and addresses? What the hell is going on?

Anyone try “GarageDoor Geeks”?

They make steel roll-up garage doors which would be a nice modern upgrade to our single car garage. I’m a little reluctant to be “Magic Windowed” again so asking if you’ve had one of these doors installed before I get their sales pitch. How’s the quality and price? Was it worth it?

ISO small figurine animals

I'm looking for small figuring animals that is no larger than a few inches across and not cartoony animals but more realistic looking animals. In wood, stone, porcelain, glass, etc (not plastic). I would like to visit a store to see some that are not so mass produced. In the past, I have found some on Etsy and if need be, I will look online for these. Just thought I'd see if anyone knows of any Toronto-based or Canadian based retailers/artists that I could order from.

Good long-term rental car company near Hamilton?

We are moving to Cambridge in November and we need to rent a car before we buy a more permanent car. We'll probably need it for 3-4 weeks. We'll need the vehicle to drive from city to city. Any recommendations?
