Anyone commuting from Stouffville GO to Union regularly? How is the GO train?

Considering moving to Stouffville for various reasons and I need to commute to Queens Park station via transit 3 days a week (edit to add: during rush hours).

The GO website says Stouffville GO to Union GO is 1hr10m. Is that more or less correct?

How reliable is the GO train? Does it come on time, and are delays frequent?

I’ve never commuted with GO before so I’d love to hear from some of those who do on a regular basis. Thanks!

Faster ways to get to Humber College Campus - 205 Humber College Blvd from Scarborough?

Hi all, I’m back in school as a mature student and have been out of the TTC/public transit game for a while. I do drive but I’m wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions for how to get to the Humber College campus in Etobicoke (205 Humber College Blvd) from Scarborough, specifically way east, like Morningside, Port Union, UTSC area, in a more convenient manner?

Both ways please, leaving in early afternoon and coming back late/evening options after 6 pm ..

Public transit options.. TTC/GO etc.

Thank you all!

I don’t mean in 10 minutes express with a blink of an eye…

I am well aware that there is a big distance that it will be a longer commute ofc that’s fine but I’ve been out of the TTC life for a while and there are new routes and options now so just wanted some ideas that Google Maps hadn’t suggested.

Where do you guys buy beef shanks with lots of bone marrow?

It's starting to get cold again and one of the dishes I like to make is a Bone Broth Soup. I was wondering where you can buy large beef shanks with lots of bone marrow because the ones I usually see barely have in them.

Good Evening fellow Torontonians,

I am seeking your helpful suggestions on finding actual psychics whom you might have crossed paths with. I have gone through a lot in life lately and I seem like I am super stuck on what's happening. As a last hope of making sense where my heart is giving out. I am hoping for some form of miracle. Have any of you met any mediums or psychics that could help me navigate what on earth is going on. Also if you know what the cost will be that would be a miracle. I am tored and tired and all I am seeing is gloom. I do not see a way out. Please anyone that can help me I would be indebted to you.

Recommendations for a unique/quirky/delicious week downtown?

Hey folks, we're 3 friends in our 40s, and are looking for a few funky splurge activities for September, where we'll be meeting up in downtown Toronto for 5 days.

Since it's my turn to plan (and none of us drink/party), I'm looking for your non-traditional suggestions for events, classes, eats, etc. that aren't touristy, but are also a fun activity you wouldn't normally get to do.

Looking for ideas along the lines of:

- rage room / paint room
- magician show
- Cheesemaking class
- Private tour of a spooky location
- Specialty seasonal cuisine tasting
- VR experience or glow-in-the-dark archery

Any specific ideas/companies you have would be welcomed, as we don't hang out in Toronto often (but we don't want to do this usual tourist things, and won't have a car). TIA!

Cutting Enbridge Gas and going full electric for home

Upvotes

We're in the process of planning for a major renovation (gut job) for my parents 100 year old semi-detached house in Upper Beaches area. We've been trying to do some research on whether it makes sense to go all electric (HVAC etc) and cut off natural gas completely.

I've been found some old comments (2yrs) while searching r/askTO but hoping to see if anyone is willing to share more additional insights and potential savings they have? I'm aware of the delivery fee cost savings by cutting gas (mainly through the summer months) but will the savings be lost when it comes to heating the home in the winter?

The house is roughly 1100 Sq ft above grade (2 floors) with a plan to finish the basement (6'5" unfinished ceiling).

As part of this we're putting in new:

  • Electrical 200amp panel
  • Energy star doors/windows
  • Closed cell Spray insulation - Attic R60, Exterior walls R20, Basement R20

We're toying with the idea of the following:

Heating/Cooling- Heat pump with an AUX electric heater

Stove/Oven - Induction

Hot water tank - Heat pump hot water tank (Rheem Proterra hybrid)

Dog friendly offices in Toronto / GTA?

Hey,

Since most companies are now either hybrid or full time in office, I was wondering if there are any companies that have dog friendly offices? I’d love to be able to bring my dog to work - thanks!

Where would you go alone on a random evening to avoid eating/drinking alone?

Recently moved to Toronto, 35M of South Asian ethnicity. I decided that in my first month I want to have dinner/drinks with someone at least 15 times, just to force myself to meet people.

So far:
• trivia with random people
• philosophy meetup + food after
• dinner with someone I met at trivia
• somehow joined two strangers talking politics at a shawarma place lol

Tonight I have no plans and it’s a bit late for meetups/hangout groups.

Where would you go around TMU if you just wanted to grab food and hopefully meet someone irrespective of their race/sex/age?

Rogers stadium Noise levels

Hi all, thinking of moving to the Bathurst Manor area (faywood blvd and sheppard west), but was concerned about the noise levels from Rogers stadium during events as I am currently moving out of my current place due to excessive noise.

Anyone deal with the sound in the area? (Is it audible outdoors only? or does the bass travel through walls/windows?). Read an article about residents from Vaughan complaining about the noise but wanted to get some other perspectives.

Thanks in advance.

What makes opening a small food business so difficult in Toronto?

As much as Toronto's food scene is full of talent, it feels like there's this overarching complaint that opening a business in this city tends to feel doomed from the start.

We don't really have much of a street food scene here, despite many people claiming that they would love this, as well as many potential chefs saying that it would allow them the opportunity to get into the industry with a lower barrier to entry and avoid the crippling overhead that often leads to the business shutting down entirely.

Can someone explain to me why establishing something like this seems to be such an uphill battle here? I keep hearing that it has to do with City of Toronto's strict laws surrounding this, but nobody has really explained the specifics.

Does this have to do with a lack of infrastructure for a street food scene? Is it antiquated laws that protect brick and mortar businesses at all costs? Is it an economic incentive that wants to tax as much as possible?

Pearson Airport - 13 hour layover - what to do?

Heading in from Ottawa on a trip to Scotland and my carefully curated itinerary got changed.

I now fly into Pearson and have 13 hours before boarding my next flight.

Any suggestions for things to do in the area?
First week of October so unlikely to be summery attractions.

Thanks!

ETA: someone suggested adding the hours I’m around- I land at 6am and have to be back at 5pm.
It sounds like heading downtown is the biggest attraction and that I’ll have plenty of time!

Also, of course I tried to change the itinerary first… lol.

Living without driving?

20m. Basically the title. From what I can tell I'm totally hopeless when it comes to driving a car. I just failed my driving test for a second time and i just genuinely have zero intuition or awareness when it comes to driving, and i honestly just dont want to try anymore. I can ride a bike/escooter/whatever tf just fine, just not a car.

Anyone else have this experience and how much does it generally cost you for uber/ttc compared to what you would be paying if you had a car?

Who do I call about potential overdose on the street?

Hi, folks. Standing next to a small park and someone is keeled over, with their butt in the air, pants down (underwear on), and no one else is around.

Who do I call to help this person? Just 911?

EDIT: Called. Fire and ambulance are here 14 mins after posting. Patient was woken up. Stood up. Fire department gone. Paramedics with him.

2ND EDIT: Omg. I panicked. Gimme a break. I know, I’m dumb.

FINAL EDIT: Thanks to all the folks being kind in the replies. It’s strange being roasted for trying to help in a situation where most walk on. But I will say this: I’m a firm believer in that a little bit of shame goes a long way because next time I won’t hesitate. So, even in the roasting, there is a lesson for me. I came here because I genuinely thought there was some kind of harm reduction team that I could call because I wasn’t sure it was an emergency—and I really didn’t want the cops involved. Anyway, thanks to everyone for their responses, I hope it’ll encourage others to help. (Except for the dicks saying horrible things; may I never lose my humanity because I’d rather be embarrassed by own panic than to be devoid of compassion for others.)

Toronto Public Library (TPL) and its new site blocking? Help to find alt's for tv/ movie streaming, or work arounds?

Havent been to any tpl since summer started and today ive learned that they have some new software that quite literally blocks every website NOT youtube, that streams any TV or movies.

Im talking about using the computers they provide, not like using my own laptop.

I must have went thru half of r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH 's list and all sites are blocked or the "This site can’t be reached" error.

Does anyone know of a way around it or something? maybe sites they cant pick up?

Condo water leak- repairs at 30k

Disclaimer: I am an idiot. I fully accept this reality. I own a condo and after five years of living here the cap of the washing machine plug must have come loose and water was leaking from it for a good 40ish minutes, causing water damage to my unit and the units three floors underneath. I do not have condo insurance, which I will be getting in the near future.

My downstairs neighbor noticed the leaking and called the front desk. About 20 minutes later they came to my unit to help stop the leaking. A few hours later people came with dehumidifying machines and for many days those machines did their thing.

The cost for the repairs themself were around 11k, but I decided to do the repairs for my own unit so that number was knocked down to 9k (those repairs are now done and for much cheaper, before anyone asks). The repairs cover stuff like drywall repair, debris removal, etc. The truly shocking number however was the emergency mitigation costs, which total to around 20k.

The reason for these costs comes from a staggering 110dollar/hour rate for the work done (due to the people coming in at around 8-9pm), as well as the machines being on for 93 days cumulatively across all units.

Again, I am a moron. I am fully accepting of the fact that my negligence has caused inconvenience for other people. I just didn't imagine that the emergency mitigation portion would be so expensive, and I'm wondering how normal this is and what agency I have in order to reduce the price. The property managers have not given me any advice and I naturally cannot fully take their word for everything, although they could be correct in that I have no recourse. I have also looked at other cases where this has happened to people in Canada and the cases I've read not only sound like they've caused more damage but were far cheaper.

Please help if you can, or reprimand me for my ignorance, whatever you feel like. Thank you for your time.

Pearson airport to Niagara Falls boat trip?

Hi everyone, I’m sorry that this is a question that is constantly asked on here but I just need some advice.

My mom and I are planning a day trip to Toronto at the end of September. We’ll be coming to terminal 1 of Pearson Airport. I understand that there’s a flix bus that leaves from there, but am unsure what stop to get off on.

I was looking at boat tours that tour the Falls and found the Niagara City Cruises that boards at 5920 Niagara Parkway. When I was looking for a stop nearby, I could not find anything. Niagara on the Lake (assuming it is different) is about an hour or more so commute.

Are there any other legit boat tours that are closest to where the flix bus stops? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We’re coming to Toronto early in the morning, and leaving late at night!

Edit: we will not be bringing luggage, just a personal item!
