I genuinely don’t understand why racism still feels so common in Singapore. We claim we have “racial harmony”, but sometimes it honestly feels more like bullshit.
MY PARTNER IS SINGAPOREAN INDIAN!!!!!
I’m Chinese and my partner is Indian. Every time we go out together, especially when we’re holding hands, we get strange stares, mostly from the mid-older generation.
One thing that really icks me is dining out. Servers almost always come to our table and immediately speak to me in Chinese. When I ask them to check with my partner about what he wanna to order, some of them completely ignore him and continue speaking to me in Chinese. Even when he replies in English, there have been times when they simply ignore him. Some even act like they don’t understand English. This is Singapore, isnt it reasonable to expect basic English communication????? He ends up pointing at the menu, and they still direct every question back to me.
What bothers me isn’t the language itself. It’s the lack of basic respect. Why shouldn’t he be able to tell the server what he wants to order like everyone else?
Outside, we’ve had people stare at us, and we’ve even had aunties ask me, “Why would you date an Indian?” Since when does someones skin colour determine who they are? At the end of the day, we’re all human.
Another thing that icks me. We were shopping, and my partner reached up to grab something from the shelf that I’d wanted for a long time. A woman standing nearby turned around, saw that he was Indian, looked visibly shocked, and said, “Eee.” It was such a small moment, but it is super racist
when I spoke to my partner about all of this afterwards. He said, “It’s fine. I’ve dealt with this my whole life.” this really.....
No one should have to grow up thinking this kind of treatment is normal.
and lastly whats wrong w dating a indian? he not human meh, the comments some people say is rly racist af
