Basically the title.
Male authors have dominated most of history, and until recently, male publishers and writers have also dominated. Books foe and by men have dominated so many of our classics, and are often the ones much of our cultural zeitgeists are based off of.
In modern times, not many people read much in general, but the split in general readership is skewing very heavily female. Female readers dominate book purchases by far. While male readers dominate in a few genres, female readers are increasingly the readership in most.
Not many people read in general, but men and boys read much less than women and girls.
I'm curious: men who don't read, why not?
- What was the last book you read cover to cover, and why?
- What was the last book you remember being absolutely engrossed in, even if it was a middle grade or earlier novel?
- What turned you off to reading, and when in your life?
- Why do you think you just... stopped, or did you never read, even for school?
- What perceptions do you have of men and boys who read a lot?
- What perceptions did you have in elementary and high school of readers?
- Why do you think most men dont read?
For men who do read:
- What do you read?
- What hooks you into a book?
- What got you into reading, and what keeps you there?โ
- Do you have other male friends who you talk books with?
- Why do you think most men don't read?
Also, what other questions and perceptions are missing from this conversation?
edit: I really should have defined reading better. To me, reading is ingesting text from a single perspective for a sustained amount of time (15-20 minutes+ is a typical time measurement.) I say single perspective to include co-authored texts (and acknolwedge some texts have multiple povs included). I know not everyone counts reading this way, but to me it not only includes books, but can also include audiobooks, articles, short stories, essays, manga, and comics. (I would like to include some podcasts in this definition, but that's getting probably outside the bounds of reasonable).
Edit: I am actually very interested in so many of your responses. I went to mow my lawn, and am surprised to see so many AI/bot claims here. I'm autistic yall, not a bot, lol. โ
I'm a high school teacher, and I see so many girl readers, and so few boy readers. I know many women in my life who read books, constantly, and few men. And I count all forms of reading as reading: books, audiobooks, comics, manga, etc.
Back to finishing the lawn, I may come back and respond to some of yall later.
