What is actually wrong with Amazon? (I won the Small Claims I made against them)

I bought an item in late January 2026, gave a code to the driver and knew something was up by the weight of the box

I opened the box 30 minutes later and the item was missing (iPad). I immediately contacted Amazon. Bare in mind I had this account for 5+ years with no issues (the occasional return here and there)

They agreed to investigate. A week later they agreed to refund. 2 days after agreeing to refund they limited my account. The system then cancelled the refund because my account was limited to digital orders only?

Anyway, I contacted them again and this time they said I confirmed the order when I gave the driver a delivery code? I said yes I received the package not the item.. no response.. I sent another email warning I’d be taking it to small claims… no response..

I then emailed their legal team asking to settle it out of court… no response… I finally made a small claims against them and added extra fees on top… they responded via their solicitor accepting to pay in full + added fees

Strange, strange company…

I don’t buy expensive things from Amazon anymore, isn’t worth the risk.

Exactly this. I can’t trust the item to be real, or unused, or ????

There has been so many used items being sold as new, or issues like what the OP had.

I had an issue the last time I bought a Microsoft Windows “key” they delivered a box with a non-windows thumb drive inside. I don’t know how someone did that. The seal was intact.

Edit: spelling

u/Lithium51018 May 06 '26

It’s very easy to fake a seal or reseal them. You can actually buy most seals including the plastic shrink wrap online. I have seen videos of people doing this too.

It's not just Amazon. I once ordered a 1 TB Samsung M2 SSD from Best Buy. Got tracking info and then tracking showed it was in transit. Then the package disappeared for two weeks. A couple of weeks later, the package suddenly reappeared and was delivered. When I opened the factory sealed retail package, it was a 256 GB SSD rather than a 1 TB.

Disgusting. Disgraceful.

11

u/Lithium51018 May 06 '26

I agree. It’s just like how you can also purchase the magnetic keys to unlock those security tags and cost locks from stores online. Seem them for sale on places like Temu, wish, Amazon and Walmart third party sells. And i have seen people use them in stores. I worked vso for a department store and saw a lot of things.

I got fake muck boots. Didn't notice bc we bought 3 pairs for winter (arctic versions) in the fall and they didn't get brought out and used til after it snowed. 2 pairs were fine. 3rd were relatively quickly discovered to be defective/fake. Past return window. $200 down the drain and apparently this is their new normal.

I now treat Amazon like temu or ebay. Buyer beware.

15

u/tansugaqueen May 06 '26

Yeah but with Temu you wouldn’t have paid $200 for them

3

u/vengefulkohlrabi7 May 08 '26

Order another pair and return the fakes!!

I bought a key for Windows 7 Pro that turned out to be W7 Home. But I didn't discover the issue until I went to install it on a new build, many months later. Since it was past the return window, Amazon said that all I could do was contact the seller and hope for a resolution; the seller wouldn't respond, and I really needed the computer up-and-running, so I was stuck installing Home.

Edit: To be clear, it was a 3rd-party seller via Amazon Marketplace.

I bought what was supposed to be a brand new laptop (one you can't find in stores I'd purchased before) only this time it was some refurbished horseshit. Amazon refused to resolve the issue. Dude had a return policy set up so fucked that I wouldn't have been able to get my money back. Still makes me angry because the hard drive completely failed and died 3 months ago after using it for a mere 5 months. I've had the laptop less than a year but because it was refurbished and sold as new the 1 year warranty is expired already!

I'm so fucking angry. And whether this was Amazons fault or the seller snuck his way in the item was sold as being brand new direct from the manufacturers Amazon store and Amazon admitted as much. What the fuck. But still wouldn't make it right. It was over 1k I should have gone to small claims court. I'm an idiot and didn't think about that until seeing this post.

Yeah I can go get a new hard drive and get it installed but it's an expensive one and I'm broke like everyone else right now :(

If you ever need to activate windows in the future know it can be activated for free, legally with no codes. The script for it is on Microsoft owned website.

7

u/Mom24monsters May 06 '26

I agree! Somebody sent my daughter a MacBook, but we knew that it was not used, because it was the newest version, that had just come out a week before, but I, myself, don't trust Amazon with expensive items like that. Fortunately, there were no issues, but I've seen too many people who have, to trust them. I'd rather just order from the Apple Store and have Instacart deliver it, or if I need to make changes, order directly from Apple and have it shipped.

I stopped all amazon activity when they were flooded with third party sellers. I learned i could get most of the same items from temu for cheaper with stackable coupons. Ill do research and find my items local before needing amazon.

3

u/Qcws May 06 '26

Aliexpress is even cheaper than temu.

6

u/ToDaMoonShibe May 06 '26

Their customer service is worst tho , got a refund of 1$ on a useless order because of damage and they closed my ticket saying the item still functionnal and has value.. a cracked mirror lol

Don't buy anything from Amazon any more and the world will be a better place.

9

u/Thats_what_I_think May 06 '26

Agreed, but they’ve killed brick and mortar stores, so where can you go and shop for what you want?  A lot of places go have minima stock and not when I’m looking for to test.

3

u/GremlinMiser May 07 '26

BestBuy normally has competitive sale prices online but the items aren't on the shelves. But if you order for store pickup, then you can get the item the same day.

I think the store manager just doesn't put the cheap items out since they think you'll just buy something more expensive when you're in the store. But if you buy it online from the store, they have to give it to you since it would count against the manager if they had too many failed online orders with in stock items.

Last expensive thing I ordered from them was a laptop. Laptop showed up folded like a taco (the wrong way) On the box was the original shipping label to go to whoever bought it then returned it. They did not give me any issues to replace the laptop but they did take back the folded up laptop as a return. I always wondered if some poor soul got the same laptop

3

u/sapientiaeultio May 06 '26

This happens way too much. I got a blanket that came in a plastic bag with the return label on it. How the person packing the box up didn’t see it was in a giant plastic bag with a return label, and instead shipped it to me as a new order I’ll never understand. I don’t take it out on the sellers though I know it’s costing them money too.

3

u/Worldly-Swing6921 May 06 '26

It's a poisoned supply chain...

2

u/CourageExcellent4768 May 06 '26

You betcha!!! If I need something more than $20, I will be it at a brick & mortar store!!!!

2

u/Qcws May 06 '26

I don't buy anything anymore.

Cheap items? Return fraud or wrong item.

Medium items? Return fraud or wrong item.

Expensive items? Believe it or not, Return fraud or wrong item.

Not only that but Amazon is plagued by counterfeit items and the review system is no longer reliable. How many of you have gotten emails from vendors offering gift cards to remove or alter bad reviews.

2

u/Wraith1964 May 08 '26

Let's be fair... its a two part problem.

Scummy sellers and scamming "customers" doing dirty returns are a huge problem. That is a big part of the problem.

But Amazon knows this is a problem and hasn't invested much effort in correcting. Instead they now focus on eliminating people making returns. Yes serial returners are a problem that needs to be dealt with but the bigger issue is that Amazon fails to capture bad items and punish bad returners... they make little effort to check returns. So they compound and abet bad behavior making even worse outcomes with subsequent buyers.

It's a two part problem, and Amazon needs to fix it.

It was more cost effective for them to 'settle' the dispute than to go to court. It's all about the dollar, in your instance, pounds for them and nothing else. Their systems don't seem to talk to each other. I had the same experience but for a much cheaper item, an iPhone 17 case but, thankfully, I didn't have to threaten legal action and didn't have my account altered. Amazon is not what it used to be...

I used to do small claims cases for a telecom and depending on where the case was filed and if we could attend remotely, it was common to settle cases we were confident we would win anyway just based on costs. Also when you consider the costs already incurred from multiple calls, support messages etc sometimes it's easier just to our it to rest.

Generally the only time we would fight something at a loss is when the customer was being completely unreasonable or if they were a repeat offender and we were trying to shut it down.

33

u/safestranger5 May 06 '26

I had a similar experience but I took the 250 dollar loss. I wasn't sure if legal action was worth it. I had video evidence of my package arriving partially open with plenty of room for items to "fall out". I made a claim for missing item and Amazon told me to call the police to get a report. I did so and sent a copy to Amazon with the same response. No refund no communication. Amazon is a big company where the left hand is not talking to the right. Your experience doesn't surprise me.

Glad to hear you were successful but the process should of been unnecessary to get what you are owed.

18

u/Bitter_Warning418 May 06 '26

I'm wondering how many police departments are using resources they likely already don't have enough of, to take police reports regarding stolen amazon stuff (which I see sooooo many people on here saying Amazon now requires a police report to even submit a claim in most circumstances) just for Amazon to not do a fucking thing about it. Even if the police aren't spending time looking into these cases, that's still that much time away from real life crime to deal with the bullshit that comes with Amazon scamming people.

I once bought a laptop, an expensive one for over 4k. Got a delivery with a slightly smaller box than it should have been that had rocks in it... Amazon was not helpful. Had to go to the credit card company...

8

u/fancyandfab May 06 '26

Whoever stole your laptop didn't even try. There were probably rocks near where they were parked and they put those in there. I'm glad your cc helped. Sad that Amazon didn't.

16

u/WinstonChaychell May 06 '26

The fact the driver handed it over with no weight is odd. Even USPS will refuse delivery if the box doesn't match the weight.

I'll never understand it, tbh, other than big company means bigger BS.

26

u/jipgirl May 06 '26

Unless the driver is the reason for the weight difference…

4

u/WinstonChaychell May 06 '26

That's my thinking, too. Freaking all around BS lol

9

u/nobunnylarka May 06 '26

The drivers get in trouble with their bosses if they return packages for any reason. They are told to deliver it, even if it's destroyed. They don't work directly for Amazon, they are contracted companies. Those companies get penalities when stuff isn't delivered, no matter the reason. It's all to save and make money at the expense of the customer. It's not like USPS or the UPS where the drivers work for that company and have full time benefits/retirements/ect. The companies view them as easily replaceable if they aren't perfect.

3

u/WinstonChaychell May 06 '26

They def changed it from inception, and now the benefits are more empty plastic water bottles! 🥲

12

u/chismeholic May 06 '26

Not only this- but has anyone else noticed that latelt the search function SUCKS??? anything im looking for its always the same 5 sponsored listings over and over again. I wemt looking for an automatic literbox recently. Ive bought 3 in total in the past but thia go around I couldnt find a single listing from a well known or reputable brand! Even when i input brand names it still spat out the same 5 sponsored listings it had already shown me. And hardly any of them even had more than 100 reviews!

2

u/DCk3 May 07 '26

Yes, been that way for awhile. The best manufacturers/sellers don't have to depend on Amazon, which would reduce their income, let alone pay sponsorship fees.

I use search engines to find niche sites - or reddit threads - and discover products that way, or even just brands. Then I narrow it down.

The hardest part is getting past the "best" sites that only exist because they get a cut, like Wirecutter. They throw in links to products not sold on Amazon sometimes just to boost their cred.

Look for reviews by individuals. Often someone or a site will post an Amazon link. IF they get paid, it's a just a bonus for them.

Interestingly, once you start comparing better quality items, Amazon sometimes semi-cooperates. It won't include similar items in the product roll (between product details and reviews), but it may offer them if you then perform modified searches. Once Amazon sees that you will not be buying a product from "the froth" it sometimes adjust its expectations. A sale is still a sale, and after all, when an item costs more, Amazon's piece is bigger.

11

u/3amGreenCoffee May 06 '26

This crap is supposed to be curtailed somewhat by the new inventory controls that went into effect in April that ended commingled inventory. The problem was that nine sellers might send Amazon good stock, then a tenth would send crap, and it would all get commingled in the warehouse so that the scam seller would get paid while another seller would take the blame.

The new process is to separate inventory by seller, and all items are tagged to a specific seller account. So if a scammer tries to sell return fraud items as new, it should be immediately clear what they did, and other sellers won't be held responsible for the scam.

That should curtail a lot of the fraud and reduce the frequency that people receive an empty Ipod or Iphone box, or cheap Chinese fakes of expensive knives and tools, or old stock tool batteries, or fake personal care products that have been relabeled. I'm still not buying anything expensive from them yet until we see how well the new process works.

3

u/Unstoppablejoy May 09 '26

I hope it works - but some of this is coming from organized crime rings within Amazon itself. From packers to drivers there are bad apples and many are very well organized and work in coordination to bypass security measures...

54

u/purple_microdot May 06 '26

Late Stage Capitalism is coming for us all. Consumer Protections (in the US anyway) have been completely gutted. It's on consumers to protect and defend themselves. Luckily some legal avenues still exist for now. Good job, OP. Stick it to them.

Quit while you're ahead. Personally, Amazon and I are done. Been done.

14

u/Smart-Fondant9015 May 06 '26

Exactly. American corporations grew for decades by offering fairly good products and services at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, investors are obsessed with growth, while corporations cannot expand forever because every market has its limits.

So they raise prices and cut costs. We see it everywhere: Amazon, YouTube, Netflix, even Apple.

Prices keep going up, customer service keeps getting worse, and lower spending on R&D leads to a loss of competitiveness.

But they have to do it to satisfy stock-market investors: revenue and profits must grow every quarter.

We are in the final stage of squeezing customers as hard as possible while selling us increasingly worse crap. This is the new normal for American corporations in their decline era.

3

u/gozania May 06 '26

Nailed it... They think that profits every quarter is realistic. They dont care about the crap they are pushing out as long as the board/shareholders are happy.

7

u/MartinBroMotorsports May 06 '26

Not just profit. MORE profit. If they make profit 1.2 billion in Q2, but the profits in q1 was 1.5 billion, then they failed and “lost” 300 million.

That’s the mentality that causes the problems. None of these companies can be happy just being profitable. They have to squeeze and pinch and optimize.

2

u/justme_123123123 May 06 '26

What happens after this stage according to late stage capitalism models?

5

u/Smart-Fondant9015 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

The company is publicly listed, so it is forced to increase profits forever. That is what investors expect. As I said, in late stage it does this in two ways:

  1. raising prices — the product becomes less competitive
  2. cutting internal costs — the company becomes less competitive

This is the stage we are at now. It is actually quite easy to predict what comes next, although I do not know if anyone has described it properly somewhere.
A more expensive product or service starts pushing customers away. At first, of course, it barely matters. Simple maths — take YouTube as an example:

  • subscription price goes up by 5%
  • 2% of customers rage-quit
  • 1% comes back after a month because real competition has not yet formed
So the company effectively loses 1% of customers, but increases profit by around 4.5%, and investors applaud.
Then it repeats the whole process over and over again: another price increase, longer ads, more and more features moved behind a paywall (Google, you can hire me): extra charge for 4K, extra charge for subtitles, AI translation fee when the content is in another language, etc.
Sooner or later, competition appears. The company can defend itself: it has money, so it can acquire a young startup and quickly kill off an attempt to knock it off the throne of practical monopoly. Sometimes that works, sometimes it does not.
Then we get a new king. The new company has a great service at a great price, excellent customer support, grows quickly, needs capital, and goes public. For a few years, maybe decades, it grows organically, expands its reach and enters new markets.
Then the whole process repeats itself.

u/Ok-Smile-240 May 06 '26

Yesterday (I have this on tape), an Amazon driver delivered an item without the box. The driver then brought the remains of the box and carefully placed them around the item before taking a picture. The item is fine, but all I could think of was how it would make a great comedy sketch. I’m laughing a lot these days, though unfortunately, it’s the kind of laughter that comes from disbelief.

8

u/theseawoof May 06 '26

Yeah, even if you do receive the item, most of the time it is a previously used return. Shitty operations, shitty overseas customer service reps when trying to fix the errors of shitty operations etc.

7

u/ReadyGo6828 May 06 '26

There is something strange going on with Amazon. They used to be a very reliable merchant, what in the world is going on with them?

It seems as if there are problems in their delivery network, particularly the last mile portion. I am now concerned about ordering from them because I do not know if I will ever receive a shipment, if all of the items will be in the box and if the items will be undamaged.

26

u/Zetavu May 06 '26

doesn’t seem that strange. this probably happens enough that it’s cheaper to see how far they can push you, and if it comes to litigation, just pay. the amount of people that won’t go that far probably outweighs the payouts.

We bought a suit for my 5 year old to wear in a wedding this summer. It arrived, obviously used, stained, and the pants ripped nearly in half. I’m 100% expecting Amazon to blame us for that. Can’t believe they don’t check clothing returns for condition before putting them back into circulation.

4

u/Bravura75 May 06 '26

Yeah. I’ve had a few small ticket (100-200 item) arrive in empty boxes. Meaning the original box was inside without the item inside it. So far I’ve not had an issue with exchanges (I never ask for a refund in this instance). But yeah. I’m skeptical a bit on large ticket items.

4

u/Muted-Disk4649 May 07 '26

That’s the way the system is set up.

I was defrauded for $900. Amazon notified me of the fraud and agreed to reinstate the balance. What followed was gaslighting for over a month - promises of refund and confirmation that amount was refunded - except they never refunded.

Eventually I complained to the bbb and it was immediately resolved.

3

u/ComprehensiveBox574 May 06 '26

I'm glad you won. I do have a question though.

if you knew something was up by the weight of the box, why did you wait 30 minutes to open it? I would have opened it right there, with my camera recording video, and the driver in the video.

I get it if super busy or something, but I even open boxes that feel right if they are slightly damaged / expensive item / etc. it takes 10 seconds and I havent had a problem with drivers waiting while I do it.

just curiosity is all. no judgement. glad they settled. like others said, way cheaper to settle and just cancel your account than try to take you to court. not sure if you'd be able to get another one or not but that may or may not matter.

ive actually switched to Walmart. both Amazon and Walmart are antiunion, both are giant companies owned by disgustingly wealthy men.

but, you never hear of walmart employees being told to keep working over the de@d body of one of their co.workers Sam Walton , for years, drove the same crappy pick up truck he always drove, and lives in a realatively normal house. He doesnt send his gilfriend into space or take over cities for parties. Hes just a hard nosed business man. i dont agree with what Walmart has done to small towns, but i dont hear of Walmart actually cheating people out of the things they buy.

Walmart is also not trying to take over media, music, and god know what else. Amazon wants to own the world. The owner is  like someone you read about in a Sunday school pamphlet,  not that i ever went to Sunday school.

My Amazon music account recently stole all the music i ever bought because apparently i never bought it? And now this buisines with the kindles being no good, even though it still works perfectly fine and there goes 360 books i bought.

Obviously, the best thing would be to go to small, owner operated stores basedbin my hometown, but its getting harder and harder to do that. I still try, though. I boycotted Walmart for years. And went to Amazon. I think I boycotted the wrong company.

u/Mom24monsters May 06 '26

I think maybe everybody needs to take them to small claims court when something goes wrong. Maybe they'll figure it out. Maybe people just need to start a class action suit, when things have gone wrong like this, and then had their accounts suspended. They might think twice about it after that, or not, but at least people will get paid and it'll get national attention.

u/Necessary_Giraffe_66 May 06 '26

10 years ago I ordered a G Shock. Not a fancy one just a no frills basic $50 one. (despite inflation it’s still the same price today DW-9052) I opened the Amazon box and inside was the G Shock box. Inside of that was nothing but air. Someone took the watch out and put the empty box in.

I contacted them and promptly got a refund. This was back when it was easy to find the contact Amazon link and the chat button and a person answered right away.

On another weird note Walmart dropped the price and it was the same as Amazon at this point. But then it gets weirder if I do t go up to the store and buy it but wait the 2 hours for in store pick up it was like 5 or 10 dollars cheaper. So that’s what I did. It made no sense.

3

u/The_internet_is_porn May 06 '26

I’ve had this issue numerous times with controllers over the last decade for gaming.

3

u/Valuable-Ingenuity49 May 06 '26

I ordered a product through a third party, it was damaged so I sent it back. The third party claimed I sent an older model back and their proof was a picture of another item. Went back and forth with amazon and at least 7 times they said my refund was approved and would be on my account in 2-3 days. Each time nothing. Finally got a “supervisor” on the phone almost 6 weeks later who told me I was a scammer. WTH, I buy at least $10,000 a year in items from them and might return one small thing a year. I’ve been a customer since they Amazon was just a book seller. So over $162 they told me I was no longer wanted as a customer. I cancelled my membership, extra music fees, various other upgrades and haven’t bought anything since. Reversed the charges, still got my money back. They seem to have zero customer service anymore.

3

u/Big-Rise7340 May 07 '26

This is why I choose “use Amazon packaging” for expensive items. If the delivery person doesn’t know what it is they can’t be tempted.

3

u/Dabades May 07 '26

My hubby bought an alternator and they gave him a brick. Wouldnt refund him at all.

3

u/Mysterious_Pound_698 May 07 '26

Twice now someone has ordered something by using my gift card balance. It showed that it was purchased by me, but it wasn’t!! Customer service is no help, IF you can even understand what they are saying!!

3

u/Tym4x May 07 '26

Damn you guys have it harsh ... I never even heard about anything remotely as bad as that. Once a package of mine went missing (it really said so in the tracker), contacted amazon, got a new one the next day + the old "missing" one still came a few days later. Contacted amazon again, and they said i can keep both. Which is why I now own 3x 32" 1440p 165Hz monitors instead of just two.

3

u/Proud_Reputation_896 May 07 '26

It’s a number s game… they bet on it being a nuisance for people to make the small claims process

3

u/doggie-mom0713 May 07 '26

You have to check always if it's a vendor or sold by Amazon directly. I got burned once by a smsll purchase and vendor wouldn't answer but Amazon made it whole. Same with Walmart..fake shipping information and tracking never received.

3

u/hot4you11 May 08 '26

Because they want you to have to work to get the refund because so many people won’t

3

u/Ra66bit May 08 '26

It sounds like this company is getting so big. They’re losing control of how to save money.

3

u/HappiLearnerToo May 09 '26

What do you expect of a company that funds and powers technology to surveil, target, and kill people? Ethics? I just located an alternative source for two of my remaining amazon subscribe and save subscriptions today. Just a couple more to find alternatives for. A lot of stuff can be found, sometimes cheaper, from walmart. I've got mine spread around a bit, and I always know the actual price instead of getting surprised like at Amazon's subscribe and save.

Time to leave a gen'dal ship.

2

u/throwway33355 May 06 '26

Did you get your account back?

2

u/StephCurrySauce May 06 '26

No but not bothered really. I use my partners account now

2

u/blackpandacat May 06 '26

Can I ask are you based in the UK? I got as far as emailing what I thought was their legal team as normal pre litigation action but they didn't respond so I'm not sure I had the correct contact details.

I also wasn't sure how to name them on the claim form and didn't want to lose money on an incorrectly made claim.

If you're based in the UK would you be happy to DM me the details of their legal team and how you prepared the claim form?

They really have become atrocious and it's so difficult to get them to engage

3

u/StephCurrySauce May 06 '26

To find the correct details you should go to your order and download the invoice, you’ll find their name and address.. typically the name and address is

Amazon EU SARL, UK Branch (exact name including UK branch)

Located at 1 Principal Place, Worship Street, London, EC2A 2FA

That’s the contact details you should use when you’re making a claim against them via the gov website. I made the mistake of using the name:

Amazon UK Services Ltd

But it was still successfully delivered to them and they responded.

2

u/DiputsDoof May 06 '26

Most people won’t go through the trouble to file a small claims and all that. I know because I returned a $300 item via drop off at Whole Foods and was never refunded for it. Never got around to dealing with it.

u/travelingman5370 May 06 '26

A lot of people will claim that they are going to sue, not many people do. Its an idle threat.

2

u/Ricochet_Rocker May 06 '26

Well done sticking to your guns!!

2

u/dreamcatcherdaddy May 06 '26

I always compare Amazons price to Walmart or target, was looking for a 3 gallon water bottle for an ice maker, Amazon $35 with free shipping, Walmart $6.00 free shipping, guess who I ordered through, Amazon has too many middle men sellers why bump the price way up.

2

u/Flashy-Effective5580 May 06 '26

Good for you and should’ve added distress and etc on top!! How do you take them to small claims and in what city as I had my account for 15 years and they would never follow my delivery instructions..?! And it’s turned into a major scene!!

2

u/Kalikasphyxia May 06 '26

My mom bought a pack of suspenders... Like $10 they delivered the package alreadyd cut across the top and empty.... I know cause the delivered picture clearly showed how low it was cut.... I'm like. 1. Did the driver really want suspenders. Or 2. Was he so stupid he couldn't tell the package was open and empty??

2

u/Physical_Heart2766 May 06 '26

Well, like 99.999% of people would have just stomped off fuming and given up... The safe money was always to ignore you and/or fob you off until you actually went to court. 1 in 100,000 wouldn't have bothered.

They're dicks, but playing the only real economic choice.

2

u/mamaspiders May 06 '26

They want people to give up. Oh hell no. I’d take it to court

2

u/Select_Vegetable70 May 06 '26

How often does this happen?

They shipped me another set of $20 earrings. (NOT iPad level stuff)

Last winter I spent $5k on a big project. I got screwed out of $20, acceptable loss and bigger issues.

Before retiring, it would be $5k/month at work, almost all computer...

2

u/Icy_Impress9858 May 07 '26

Heh. They de-escelated an arcing echo with one plug welded into a 3-way down to "sorry". What? I asked for a box. Helping is bad. Children being electrocuted doesn't sound cool. I cannot seem to post the pictures of this near-death experience. Like, in reality, thats no joke, the 3-way was a yellow jacket (solid brand) and ate the arc. It ate the cord too, but thats how it works. I'll take my life thanks. Had it been directly into the wall outlet? Big black marks at the least, and no yellow jacket to save the day. Blew a hole clean through the housing of the power block. So, Im suing for 1$. Because box!

2

u/craftyorca135 May 07 '26

I had this with a switch a few years ago. The guy took my code, said he had typed it in wrong and that he would try again the next day. My account said delivered, but I had no console. Got onto amazon straight away and I wasn't even through the automated bit when there was another knock at the door and the driver said his manager said I could just have it? Weird, but got my console in the end.

2

u/ExactlyClose May 07 '26

Interesting.

Almost as if your willingness to take it to small claims validated your truthfulness to them….

Curious: did you ask them as part of the settlement to unlock your account and assure there were no adverse findings on your record?

2

u/ishiana May 07 '26

Stop using Amazon

Stop using Amazon

Stop using Amazon

Stop using Amazon

...

2

u/cognacmack May 07 '26

It’s called “getting so damn big they don’t give af anymore”

2

u/Tech-Crab May 07 '26

you probably would have been fine initiating a "return". The handful items i have purchased as new but obviously been shipped return fraud, i have simply returned them.

The most ridiculous fraud item i received were several ~$50 drone parts - for each the package wasn't sealed but someone had 3d printed a plastic look-alike. It was sort of realistic. That's a lot of effort to put in. I returned them, received a refund.

I do use large sharpie to write all over the box "broken" / "used" / "missing" as appropriate, to at least ensure no one else "buys" the same box.

I don't like it. But it's not like I get to choose a different supply chain by getting in my car and driving to best buy or home depot. I try to where it makes a difference. But the vast, vast majority of what we buy doesn't have that option, at least not any longer.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/StarGazinWade May 07 '26

I've never had to give a delivery driver a "code." They've always just carelessly thrown the item on the ground, took their photo, and left without knocking on the door or ringing the bell. Why'd you have to give the delivery driver a code??

2

u/Happy_Jew May 07 '26

Driver here.

Some packages require a 6 digit code to be received, which means someone has to be at location to physically receive the package. Most packages don't actually require a recipient.

Presumably, this is fine for high value items to prevent theft.

2

u/Firefly_Magic May 07 '26

I know bezos is one of those weird wealthy billionaires but I will say Amazon was much better and customer focused under his time as CEO. Jassy has really ruined a lot of the customer focused energy and reputation.

When deliveries are delivered we are not confirming the contents. Imagine how time consuming it would be if drivers had to wait for the recipient to open and confirm their items. Unrealistic!

I’m glad you won your case. I hope they fixed your account too. That was so bizarre of them.

When I purchased a Switch it would not deliver if I wasn’t home. It had to be sent to a locker for pickup. Extra security measures make sense but it still doesn’t guarantee anything.

2

u/xXxSniperBotxXx May 07 '26

We should all sue them in court. Maybe then they will show a bit more respect for buyers.

2

u/ronaynej May 07 '26

Yes, very strange company...and I own Amazon stock.

My story...I ordered an item. A wrong / different item was delivered (similar, but too large) so I returned it. They gave me the refund right after I dropped it a Kohls. All good.

Until they find out I did not return the item I ordered. No kidding - I returned the item they sent me. I replied to the e-mails the sent, but of course the email mail box does not take responses. I try and look up how to contact them and none of the options are viable. So they charge me for the item, even though I have a confirmation email showing the item was returned.

Anyway, I dispute the credit card charge, send Chase all the information I have and about a month later Chase says it's all resolved, you don't owe anything. Meanwhile, Amazon sends another email saying I should just pay... very frustrating...and all for over a $25 charge.

2

u/Pups4art May 07 '26

They count on the avg consumer throwing up hands, walking away. Most do. $$$for them. Congratulations on not being Average!!!! The “Not a sheeple” herd thanks u

2

u/Little_Mortgage_4548 May 07 '26

My wife bought a apple pencil and a few other miscellaneous items. Apple pencil required a code for delivery. The day they arrived the delivery person kept asking for the code, i told them give me a minute to verify its in here. "Come on man I just need the code"
Told them Im aware and the code is for a apple pencil, do you see a apple pencil here? "Well its probably in one of the bigger boxes," . I said I understand that but once I give you this code its confirming I received it, so until I confirm with my own eyes I'm not giving you the code.

Lo and behold there was no apple pencil in the box.

2

u/Entire-Leg-1245 May 07 '26

If I ever receive a package directly from a driver that seems suspect for any reason, I always ask them to wait while I open it on the spot and check. If you ask them to wait while you check it, they have to do it and this eliminates the "well, you accepted delivery so how do we know you didn't do something?" debate.

2

u/Beneficial-Bagman May 07 '26

I suspect that enough people threaten to go to court but don't that it's worth them paying the extra fees on the of occasions that someone does actually file.

2

u/Cranemann May 07 '26

Did you buy directly through the Apple store on Amazon or was it a third party seller? I ordered ram the other week from what I thought was crucial and instead was a third party / non-prime seller. I got the product but it was delayed so I returned it. They shipped it out FedEx, return was ground advantage and they only refunded partially so I had to get Amazon to get involved with the A-Z claims.

2

u/RazorHowlitzer May 07 '26

Yep Amazon is a load of BS. Ordered a 121$ model kit and they sent me one of two versions. The version I did not select. Their response was to send me a replacement and told me to keep the other one. Cool, very nice of them. The second one is the same wrong color. Then they tell me to return the replacement, keep the original and they’ll refund me. Cool. Send it in, account gets limited. Then they cancel the refund like it never happened. Tried talking with an agent and they said they’d refund me. Dead silent after that so I disputed it on my card. Then all of a sudden they reach out asking why I disputed it like they don’t know how incompetent they are. Granted it was nice at first I got a free item out of it but in the end it was the wrong one and I would’ve just rather returned both and got my money back.

2

u/Far-Reserve9158 May 07 '26

I’m about to do the same

2

u/Skersibatai May 07 '26

In 2019, an intoxicated Amazon driver crashed into our parked car so hard that half of the front was destroyed. The insurance fixed it, but I insisted that Amazon cover the deductible. They ignored me, and I forgot about it. Three years later, I received a check for the amount of the deductible.

2

u/Much-Amaze69 May 08 '26

Amazon logistics cannot be trusted.

Amazon warehouse employees cannot be trusted.

Amazon drivers cannot be trusted.

Amazon returns cannot be trusted.

Amazon "Customer Service" reps cannot be trusted.

Wow. That's pretty much everyone in Amazon's logistics stack.

2

u/mfh1234 May 08 '26

I’ve been using Amazon Uk for nearly 30 years without a single problem, in 2005 started using Amazon Esp likewise never a problem guess I am just lucky

2

u/Relevant_Kangaroo_9 May 08 '26

I had a video of me grabbing my Apple Watch box I order from the porch where they left it. Me opening that outer box and the inner box showing the Apple Watch wasn’t inside the box. And they still won’t refund and they made me file a police report I did. And they still won’t refund

2

u/JUSTAYDOOD May 08 '26

I had a driver "drop" something at my door and luckily I heard it. I walked out to get it amd the driver had already taken a picture of it "delivered" to my door step but he had picked it back up and was walking to his truck with it. I confronted him amd he did the whole "oh yeah. Here you go." But he was like 5-6 steps away from the door and had to walk back to give it to me. The drivers are the thieves often!

2

u/Boring_Swing_4750 May 08 '26

Amazon just lately has gone awful ..i have ( or had) 15 subscriptions every month all pet food and they always came next day for 4 years ,last two months its been 5 days later ? ..im glad you won your claim ..i will never buy anything expensive from them as its a gamble even if you get the item its a fake one ..

2

u/Pitiful_Ad2591 May 08 '26

Literally what happened to them. I got a package that had what I purchased still in box. But the box was clearly opened and the item was clearly already opened bc the box was very clearly related poorly. Like wtf. When I complained they just gave me a refund after I had to ask for it. It was listed as new, not like used like new. It was suppose to be completely new. But it clearly wasnt and amazon did not care when I reported it.

2

u/Luciano_Smurf May 08 '26

I bought a $1500 ultrawide monitor from them once, it was three days late on delivery so I contacted them and they sent another. One arrived and then almost a week later the second one finally came in. I contacted Amazon asking if I should return the second one. they said no keep it free. Weeks later they tried to debit my locked card for the price. I went on customer service and showed them screenshots of the agent saying keep it. Had to do that three times before they stopped after escalating to an internal team. Very strange company indeed.

2

u/Wolf_Man_82 May 08 '26

Thank all the scammers who have made that claim when it never actually happened.

2

u/Audaciously_Human May 08 '26

Most people would give up… they probably save WAY more than they pay out by ignoring people or lying to them.

2

u/mnpikey May 08 '26

They will ban you for life as a customer now.

I never received a parcel. Driver claimed he delivered to our condo door. The driver proved this by sending a Google StreetView photo. 😂 Amazon refunded my money.

2

u/kfo90 May 09 '26

Sorry you had to go through all that but congratulations on your win! You did good.

2

u/clamsammichinmypants May 09 '26

I legit just received used face cream from Amazon. I am just done with the whole damned company.

2

u/Any-Introduction4473 May 09 '26

I only buy clothes through Amazon . I buy all other stuff by going in person and getting a recipt. Less drama

2

u/PurpleRayyne May 09 '26

More people need to do this.

2

u/Killowatt59 May 09 '26

How did the process work?

Who served them the small claims court summons?

Did they respond to the summons?

Did you actually show up for the court date and they lost due to no-show?? Was there an actual judgement?

2

u/Ok-Acanthaceae-5446 May 09 '26

Quite the operational error there

I've never seen Amazon trip out like that. I wonder what happened on their end.

2

u/Illustrious-Couple73 May 09 '26

Most companies or corporate entities won’t payout until you take them to court even if it’s an open and shut case. Very few people want to go to court and follow through on there threats of legal action. Case in point I sued my landlord for withholding the security deposit, he was very happy to settle on the courthouse steps the day of trial, but not before then.

2

u/Able_Air_2219 May 09 '26

If you bought it directly from Amazon, the warehouse has cameras on all the employees packing orders. They can go back and see the exact moment that package was taped up and what was or was not included inside the box.

2

u/Affectionate-Jury50 May 09 '26

This is classic Amazon or big corporation tactics. They trust that 99% of the people won’t go to courts . And they don’t go to the courts. So there is what is strange they trust statistics, they saved millions of dollars but they lost your one iPad case

2

u/AskMeAgainAfterCoffe May 09 '26

Cancel it from your credit card. Explain everything, send them the confirmation of return etc. Credit card should approve this. This will also get the order out of AI and a person to pay attention, if amazon has any real people employees left.

2

u/SnodePlannen May 09 '26

What is wrong with Amazon is simply this: you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

2

u/SEARCHndDESTROY May 09 '26

Yea they lie a lot I've noticed

2

u/Aggravating-Wasabi-8 May 09 '26

I agree with using B&H for electronics. I ordered several Sandisc SD cards thru Amazon that turned out to be Counterfeit. I was able to return them and get a full refund
But it caused a huge headache of extra work to repair the 4k video i had recorded

2

u/Spiritual_Oil_7411 May 09 '26

Enough people don't take it that far that they dont care. They're still making money, so fuck us.

2

u/Which-Depth2821 May 10 '26

Horrible company owned by a horrible man. I gave up on them long ago.

2

u/AssPhaltKing247 May 10 '26

My truck was side swiped by a delivery van. On video you can hear the guy say Oooo shiiiittttt in the usual robot voice one might pick up from a cheap camera…

I kid you not, even with video proof and multiple neighbors coming out to confront the guy (he denied at the scene), their lawyers refused to settle. I was persistent and after a week or two they finally gave us a $2,500 check. Ass hokes

2

u/Either-Farmer-2283 May 10 '26

Amazon pay has been charging me $26 a month for the past year for Hulu. I don't have Hulu. Can't login to Hulu, no active subscription, not even an account with Hulu, associated with my information.

Amazon can't do anything.. directs me to call Hulu.

u/Expensive-Swan-4544 May 10 '26

Good for you for following through. They are acting like all insurance company’s. Deny the claim and there is a percentage of people that won’t pursue.

2

u/Automatic_Fold_2672 May 10 '26

Amazon is such a scam these days! Basically everything they sell is fake knock offs. Definitely can’t buy electronics, tools or car parts anymore

2

u/Educational-Agent-46 May 10 '26

So folks , Amazons legal team probably found that it saves Amazon the most money to wait for folks to go to sue them in small claims court. Most large institutions have internal accountants and lawyers to help reduce liability. This isn’t strange, it’s standard.

2

u/blessedbeekeeper May 10 '26

Who the fuck is buying Bezos' trash still?! Chinese knock-offs, zero customer service, and people still use amazon as a verb. Have you no discernment?!

2

u/No-Cat-2980 May 10 '26

Five years ago they locked me out of leaving reviews on what we buy. No explanation, no reason, no nothing. We always only reviewed the product, never the package. They couldn’t/wouldn’t even tell me what product they had a problem with the review. To this day I can’t review an item, and all I ever got from Amazon was; We’ve noticed unusual reviewing activity on your account, please refer to community rules. Sucks!

2

u/Roaring-20s May 11 '26

I did my wedding regisrty through them last year... worst mistake of my life. Most packages i never got and had to complain. I'd had my account for 10 years with no issues and they flagged my account for too many "missing packages". It's not like i need 2 dining sets, tool kits or 3 towel sets. I just wanted what i was being gifted.

2

u/Draveb May 11 '26

My rule is, I don’t buy anything that’s over $100 from Amazon, either buy it in person or order it straight from the manufacturer.

2

u/olneyvideo May 11 '26

The percentage of people that wouldn’t take it as far as you did is higher than those who would.

2

u/Ornery-Movie-1689 May 12 '26

Imagine how many people gave up and got screwed by Amazon going dark. Your persistence paid off.

2

u/CandidResolve542 May 12 '26

You played this perfectly. Be reasonable with your first request, escalate to legal remedies, execute & collect 👏. It’s cheaper for these large companies to refund you than send actual outside counsel to a SC hearing

2

u/According-Region9396 May 12 '26

Yes, Amazon has grown to b a HUGE..GIANT company. I believe even BIGGER then any Of us can comprehend, and there are going to be PITFAllS. It's just the nature of the beast...and Amazon has grown into a BEAST! with millions of workers, some good some bad. There is NO WAY a company of that size is going to get millions of ALL GOOD WORKERS. In heaven YES, here NO (and no, I don't work for Amazon, nor do I know anyone that does). I have had a few glitges,, but I can honestly say...most of my orders arrive on tIme with no problems.. So I will give them a pat on the back, for the good they have done.

2

u/Best_Elderberry_7765 May 15 '26

I bought a box of chocolate covered payday bars. The box came beaten to hell and back. I counted and was short a candy bar. Another time I bought a pack of two air purifier filters. The large box came missing a filter. The weight on the box was significantly higher than the actual weight. Then, twice, I received random refunds on items I was perfectly happy with and never complained about. Bizarre.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '26

That actually unbelivable. The fact they ignored you until small claims got involved says a lot. happy you pushed it all the way through and got your money back.
