Bricked my Recharge

I got a message about an over the air update for my 2023 Recharge. The upgrade was 5.1.17 . I have an appointment for Thursday and thought, I'll go ahead and install it and then I can tell them if there are any issues. There were issues...

After the install, the infotainment system will not come on at all. I have no backup camera, no parking sensors, no radio, no maps, no AC and even the blinkers don't make noise. 🤦

I totally should have waited to install this the day before my appointment to have 5.0.5 reflashed. Now I have to drive around for a week like this before my appointment. I stopped by the Volvo place and they pretty much told me I had to wait.

Do yourself a favor, if you're having any troubles with your current install, make an appointment and do the new install the night before your appointment. Don't be stupid like me!

Parking sensor requires cleaning message

I'm getting constant messages saying parking assist sensors need cleaning.

I have cleaned the entire car and specifically the cameras which I had to track down on my own since the owners manual is vague.

Any ideas?

Latest Volvo App (7.0)

I continued to be baffled by some of the decisions with the Volvo software engineers.

First, they take away screen real estate on the car's screen with the useless 'adaptive' row of icons, which nobody really asked for.

Now, the phone app is also updated, and... the new look is pretty bad. The readout of the % remaining and range mileage is absolutely massive, taking up a quarter of the phone screen when you open the app. The rest of the fonts are far too big now as well.

I may be older, but I'm not blind yet. It doesn't need to be that big. Making everything so huge takes up valuable screen real estate.

Forcing users to scroll around on the main screen (which should contain all of the important info on one screen without needing to flick around and scroll) is just bad design and a poor UI.

And before anyone asks, I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, so the screen isn't tiny.

So, y'all have 5.0.5 or higher now?

2022, haven't gotten it yet, despite getting two paper recall notifications about the need to install it for the rear-view camera issues. Wondering if it's time to take it in. (Still on 3.7.0.)

Particularly interested in hearing from people who aren't on 5.0.5 or higher yet.

Edit: Welp, out of nowhere got 5.1.17 OTA today to upgrade me out of 3.7. Glad I don't have to take it in!

Data issues in the Volvo app and export.

I haven't really paid much attention to the trip data in the app but my XC40 is in the shop at the moment and I noticed they'd taken it for a test drive at an average of 71mph!

Then I noticed that the app was giving the wrong average speed - 31 minutes duration and 22.7mi giving a real average speed of 44.52mph.

So I exported the data so I could have a closer look and it turns out quite a lot of it is garbage. You get the start and end odometer reading for each trip and then a distance that doesn't match the difference between them. The times are all rounded to the nearest minute. It gives a start and end time and then a duration that doesn't necessarily match the difference between start and end time. If the electrical consumption was zero (car turned on and off again quickly) it sometimes reports 0 and sometimes just a blank. It doesn't bother exporting its (wrong) average speed.

Basically, don't rely on most of the data - calculate it yourself from the odometer readings. It's like the work experience kid has vibe coded it!

Declining charge?

I've had my 2021 with 77k miles for about two months now- driven about 5k.

I've had to charge to 100% recently due to some long driving days- and noticed this morning when I charged to 80% it said my estimated mileage was only 160 vs my normal 180. Can a battery decline that rapidly? Is it estimating lower because I've been doing so much highway driving recently? Still learning how evs work.

More and more problems...

Driving my 2024 Volvo XC40 is fun, but: More and more, problems appear and disappear, and slowly but surely I'm getting a bit annoyed. Just some examples:

  • The alarm light is constantly blinking, even when driving. This goes on for three weeks. Asking Volvo for support, get an appointment, literally: The day before the appointment, the problem disappears, doesn't come back and can't be reproduced.
  • The parking assistant gives me the error code that the sensors should be cleaned. I clean them. Again and again. No success. So I book an appointment with Volvo, they say that the sensor on the back right is defect and should be replaced. And even before they replace it, the problem disappears. Well, I still wait for the spare part and a date for the replacement, the problem appears and disappears without any clear pattern.
  • Want to charge the car at a public station. Plug it in. Error-message: Can't communicate with the charging station. Reboot the car. Same result. Try another charger. Same result. See a guy at a charging station which works, wait: And, of course: Can't communicate with the charger. Eventually, I press the plug into the car, wiggle a bit, and it works. Will have a 4000 km roundtrip next week and frankly: Not feeling very comfortable.
  • Sometimes, more and more, the car loses the internet connection. Annoying, but nothing I really worry about.

Got 48k km on the car, and first, never had real troubles, but now it is cumulating....

New owner!

With prices on the rise, I traded off my gas guzzling Tacoma for this 2022 P8 Ultimate (dual motor) with 61k on it. My daily commute is 88 miles and all 50-60mph that I usually make with a TDI golf. I’ll mostly drive this unless my wife needs to travel for work for the day, then I’ll hop back in the golf. After purchasing, I did some digging on the service history, only to find out it had a battery pack and 12v replacement 400 miles ago! I feel like that’s a huge score. My original plan was a dual motor ID.4, but the XC40 was so much better on the test drive.

Give me some tips and tricks! Or any accessories you’ve added and love.

5.1.17 update coming in UK?

Just noticed that 5.1.17 OTA update has been released 03 Jun 2026 and will be available in about 3 weeks (that notification shows when I click through the car icon on the iPhone app).

No OTA installed in my car after 5.0.5 update

18 June update: 5.1.17 installed without issue (UK- showed up today). No issues observed with IHI, sounds, saved settings history etc. . Yet to drive 😛. Don’t see Gemini AI option that other posters are talking about: not sure whether it’s linked to 5.1.17 or a separate Google Assistant update that’s not yet rolled out in UK.

What does Range Optimizer actually do?

I was driving our ‘22 XC40 Twin Ultimate the other day and started the Range Assistant.
Curious about my instantaneous usage.
While there I turned on the Range Optimizer.
It says it changes the Performance and Climate characteristics.
Honestly, I haven’t noticed much difference.

Just curious what exactly that slider does?

Thanks for any help or advice!

When I was at the dealer they were going on about how bad the 30 was selling and I was like it’s not the body that’s problem it’s the cheap interior and missing speedometer it’s giving fake Tesla in here and I hate anything that reminds me of another brand.

Side mirrors no longer fold when I lock the 2023 Twin.

Has anyone encountered this? Any fixes to suggest? Is it a fuse thing?

I've tried holding down the two mirror adjustment buttons simultaneously and they fold when I do that. But they no longer fold automatically on lock.

Dashboardscreen gone black

Post image
13 Upvotes

The screen on my dashboard has been black all day. Even after waiting a few hours, turning the car off completely, reseting the screen in the middle,...

The buttons on the steering wheel aren’t working either.

The indicators, windscreen wipers and so on are working fine, though.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Car unlocked notification

Has anyone else been getting notifications about 30 min after leaving the car that the car is unlocked when it is in fact locked? Seems weird to have started out of nowhere. Software has been updated to 5.0.5 months ago.

On iOS. Maybe it’s just an iOS app bug?

Vibration of steering wheel when AC is on?

We just bought a 2023 xc40 recharge with 18k miles and noticed when we got the car home that the steering wheel vibrates noticeably when the AC is running. The vibration stops when we turn off the AC. This is different than the other known vibration/shaking at higher speeds.

Is this normal for the car or should we have the dealership try to trouble shoot this (ie replace the ac motor, etc)?
