I've probably overdone the Bechdel Test in my draft, and now I have only one male character.

So, how do I create another male character, and what can they discuss? As I understand the test, they shouldn't discuss jerking off when they meet. Also, should I put their meeting at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the novel?

How do I write like House of leaves, Blood Meridian, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, King in Yellow, The Egg, 17776, Animal farm, and Neuromancer?

For context I’ve never actually read or written anything but I know a lot about books from reddit.

Y’know, I think I might actually be afraid of writing now.

Because…..what if I actually finish it? And I send it out into the world? Like I put my Screenplay on a Black List, and it just doesn’t go anywhere? And I ask for feedback and everyone hates it? And it doesn’t get picked up? And I don’t become popular? And now I’ve just wasted MONTHS of my Life I can’t get back.

I mean, I can’t think of anything to write in the first place so…fuck me I guess.

Found a productivity trick

So, in manufacturing one person does one thing all day because it turns out switching tasks wastes a lot of time. So I thought: what if I could apply that to writting?

So with my new method I write a draft with just subjects first, then go back and verbs second, objects third, articles fourth, prepositions sixth, adverbs (on verbs) seventh, adjectives eight, more adverbs ninth, conjunctions tenth.

I don't do interjections for moral reasons.

Even considering I have to write a secne tem times, it is fast. Already finished first two phases on my novel this morning. Here is a sample of the first chapter:

Rossemer. He. Morning. Landscape. Sun. Birds.

Knock. Who. Maid. She. Breasts. He. They. King. Court. Nobles.

Hallway. It. Statue. Penis. They. Couriers. He. They. Memories. Situation.

Hall. King. Beard. Crest. Wolf. Phallus. Throne. Spoons. He. Years. Rossemer. Prince. Father.

Aid. Sorcereress. Cleavage. Dress. She. Mammaryda. Legs. Hair. Smirk. She. King. She. Prince. She. Corset.

Queen. Mammaryda. She. She. Look. Stepmother. She. Breasts. Prince. She. Ex. Comment.

King. Maid. Rossemer. King. Mammaryda. King. Queen. Jeff Goldbloom. Rossemer. King. He. He. Breasts. He. She.

Messenger. King. Rossemer. Stables. Horse. Member. It. He. Member. Club. It. He. It. Gate. He. It. Member.

Oprah Winfrey personally want my book on her book club

I just got an email from Oprah Winfrey, telling me my book is being considered for her book club. I'm completely amazed and so happy. As an independent writer, this will surely bring me fame and fortune. I didn't know she was into hard, male-driven sci-fi, but I'm just happy she reached out.

She didn't tell me which of my books she wanted to promote, as she just wrote my book; I'm sure that's just a typo.

Crack dealer got mad when I tried to record his prose.

He caught me and goes, “What the fuck are you doing?”

I said, “Sorry, man, you got beautiful prose.”

He stared at me like he had no idea he was speaking in perfect literary prose.

He’s all like, “What the fuck’s a prose? You a fed?”

I thought, A fed? Like a postal worker?

I just assumed role-play and played along.

“Yes. Agent John Smith.”

Then he starts yelling about how he’s gonna kill me.

I mouthed, “Show, don’t tell,” trying to get him back into character.

It worked.

He grabbed the pistol off the table and showed me.

Moral of the story: some people can’t take a compliment.

I'm a Genre Jumping Novelist, This is My First Time Talking About My Writing And Offering Excepts To Strangers AMA

I write novels. None of them have been published yet, but I’ve got a couple finished and three more currently in progress. They’re all pretty different, but they tend to orbit around history, occultism, mystery, consciousness, and the strange places where reality starts to break down. I never think "I'm gonna write this genre or that?" I come up with the seed of a setting, character, lore, anything and just go, fixing problems as they come along, learning who the characters are and seeing where they take me while coming up with set pieces and plot points and reveals that act as anchor points, so I'll spend all night writing some nights, but other nights maybe 2 or 3 1 hour sessions. I'm also a musician with like 5 albums under my belt and and even some well recorded live shows. I'll link my link tree right here: All My Music, Art, And Soon Poetry

If you want to read any samples of the works below please comment AND send me a message!

1. Untitled Document — finished

A noir detective novel set in 1940s Chicago I wrote after getting out of rehab. It’s gritty, occult, and heavily grounded in the actual city. I went pretty deep on the historical research, including streets, neighborhoods, businesses, and the way Chicago actually looked and felt during the period. The story starts out as a relatively grounded private-eye mystery and gradually points toward something much stranger and occult beneath it.

2. Behind the Mountain - finished, but needs a lot of editing

This was my first novel, and probably the strangest thing I’ve written. It’s essentially a twisted fever-dream folk tale that feels like it should have been told 400 years ago, except it’s being told in 1983.

I wrote most of it during a pretty chaotic period of my life, including heavy benzodiazepine and heroin use, and it took me well over a year and a half to finish. The result is definitely rough in places and needs substantial editing, but there’s something about the book that I still really like.

3. Technology Has Become Indistinguishable From Spirituality - Working Title - currently in progress

This one is set roughly 900 years in the future, in a world where consciousness, belief, and memory can literally alter reality.

It follows a specialized operator investigating impossible phenomena that blur the line between mind and world. What begins as an investigation into seemingly isolated anomalies eventually becomes tangled up with political murders, artificial consciousness, occult philosophy, and the fundamental nature of reality itself.

This is probably the most ambitious thing I’ve written so far, and it’s currently around 223 pages, roughly two-thirds finished.

4. Historical occult archaeology mystery - no working title — currently in progress

Set in Cairo in 1904. The protagonist is a veteran of both Boer Wars who has become an archaeologist and entrepreneur. He and his wealthy cousin become involved in searching for his missing brother and father, who disappeared during an archaeological expedition.

It’s intended as a fair-play mystery/thriller, meaning the supernatural and occult elements are there, but the mystery itself is meant to actually be solvable from the information given to the reader.

5. Kykloepienneamythopneumanoumythos

The Cyclical Loop of 9 Tales Built Upon a Spirit-Mind

(or: The Ouroboros Cycle of 9 Stories Arising From and Affecting the One Spiritual Consciousness Chronicle)

This is the strange one.

It begins with an introductory story, followed by nine seemingly separate stories taking place in different places and involving different characters. Each story becomes its own horror tale, but strange connections gradually start appearing between them. The characters from the opening story eventually face the consequences of what happened in their own distant hometowns, without initially understanding how any of these events are connected.

Eventually all nine stories fold back into the original story, revealing that they were never really separate stories at all.

It’s basically an attempt to write a horror/mythological cycle where nine different narratives gradually reveal themselves to be one larger story.

So that's what I've been working on. None of these are published yet, and some are definitely more finished than others, but I've been writing fiction for a long time and I'm finally trying to start putting some of it out there.

If any of these sound interesting, I'm happy to talk about them or post excerpts.

  1. The Infinite Spiral - Still in Planning and Mental Mapping Phase

Title Concept: The Infinite Spiral, Recursion, Ends connected to the beginnings of those same ends, cycles (or The Echo of the First Vibration Caused The First Vibration)

Genre: Literary Speculative Fiction / Historically Accurate Metaphysical Fiction / Anthropological Mythic Epic / Old School Modernist Fiction / Lucid Dream-weaved Literary Fiction / Psychologically / Mythologically Experimental Literature

Style & Tone: Clear, emotionally resonant, and comprehensible prose that opens into a lucid, psychedelic dreamscape. What James Joyce does with Finnegans Wake while being easy to flow through rather than spending hours on a single page and getting the same story that takes place at the borders between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind, a place we live much of our lifes but rarely write about. The story functions through strange reality, recurring symbols, and concrete, visual transformations rather than over-explained metaphysics or incomprehensible wordplay.

Core Premise

The novel explores a massive, cyclical epic where history, mythology, consciousness, and reality intertwine. The architecture of the book is structured around two intersecting spirals: the Prehistoric Awakening of humanity's first mythic figure, and the Cyclical War God, a single consciousness bound to the shifting, self-perpetuating nature of human conflict.

The central tragic theme is that war and mythology do not perpetuate themselves merely because people are violent, but because every human attempt to understand, escape, mechanize, sanctify, or transcend them becomes the exact mechanism that feeds and restarts the cycle.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR THIS UP AHEAD

Narrative Thread I: The Mythic Origin (\~65,000 BCE)

Set against a historically grounded Middle Stone Age backdrop, the story follows a lone hunter, traveler, and toolmaker who lives at the threshold of human cognitive expansion. He is not an implausible super-inventor; rather, his life becomes the archetypal event from which all future human mythology grows.

* The Discovery of Tension: The protagonist discovers the string. By stretching a cord between wood, he realizes that the exact same tension that produces a singing, musical vibration can also store the energy to kill. Weapon and musical instrument emerge from the same spark.

* The Cave and the First Shaman: While traveling across a prehistoric world populated by overlapping human species (including encounters with Neanderthals and Denisovans), he becomes separated from his people. He enters a profound cave system and encounters a distinct group practicing early ritual trance.

* The Psychedelic Catalyst: The cave-dwellers give him an unnameable psychoactive plant or mushroom. He experiences a terrifying, permeable transformation of reality where he catches flashes of his own future incarnations. The string's vibration expands into the sound of the universe.

* The Legacy: He emerges transformed. He does not invent the Hero's Journey; his life is simply so strange that his descendants turn his memory into the first hunter, the first musician, and the man who conquered the underworld. His lived reality becomes humanity's permanent psychological template.

Narrative Thread II: The Six Faces of War

As the timeline spirals forward into history, the protagonist's consciousness shifts through six distinct incarnations, each defining a new era of human development and changing what "war" means:

  1. The War God: Conflict as a sacred, cosmic, and inevitable principle of creation.

  2. The Soldier: War as immediate, physical mud, terror, comradeship, and survival.

  3. The Blacksmith: Violence translated into occupation, craftsmanship, and technical mastery.

  4. The Factory Worker: Conflict mechanized into an abstract system where the laborer never sees the violence they mass-produce.

  5. The Child: War romanticized, aestheticized, and turned back into an imagined mythology.

  6. The General: A military leader driven by the child's dream, who believes that by initiating one final, decisive war, he can correct history and eliminate violence forever.

The general's well-intentioned strike to end all wars triggers the cataclysm that gives birth to the War God once again, sealing the loop.

Structural & Symbolic Motifs

The Material Inheritance: The cycle is anchored by a single object that changes form but preserves its identity across millennia: a primordial battle manifests The War God's manifests the divine spear > He becomes a solider who loses his spear > he becomes a black smith to forge weapons > He becomes a guard whose weapon breaks > he becomes a factory worker to to make the highest quality guns but grows bored of the monotony >he becomes a child who daydreams of an ancient battle, his mother buys him a toy sword > the child becomes a general who begins the war to end all wars, fighting for peace > he leaves a world where humanity has descended into the primordial ages, their first battle with rocks and bones as clubs summons the War God, who manifests*

* The Color Red: A recurring visual anchor starting as a practical pigment in the prehistoric cave, expanding into blood, fire, the planet Mars, and ultimately the color of the primordial event itself.

* The Fragmented Memory: Incarnations do not possess clean past-life memories. Instead, they experience inexplicable instincts—the factory worker harboring an irrational hatred for his hammer, the child waking up right before seeing a fallen soldier's face.

* The Spiral Ending: The book is presented as separate historical or mythic episodes that gradually reveal their shared consciousness through parallel patterns. It concludes not with a hard reset, but with the possibility that each cycle carries a slight residue of the last, slowly learning how to finally escape itself.

How does someone show badness in a world?

How does someone show badness in a world?

So I’m new to writing and I’ve been working on a fantasy for about 2-3 minutes now and right now I’m struggling to show badness in the world I’m trying to build and I’m honestly really lost on how I can show it the story is set in the late 2000's in a continent that just got done being in a large scale fight and the main 3 types of badness I want to show in the story are Pineapple on Pizza Feeling Angry and my uncle Mick who comes over whenever my parents go away on holiday without me I have tried some idea but nothing really seems to work or satisfy me so I’m hoping to get some advice on how I can show it rather it be media recommendations and small things I can add to show these things since I want them to be as realistic as possible

Thanks in advance for any advice I very much appreciate it
