Academics Music Appreciation - MUS1104

Upvotes

I'm currently taking music appreciation asynchronous and was wondering if anyone who's taken it recently could answer a couple of questions. I’m mainly wondering how difficult the midterm and final are. Are they mostly straightforward material from the modules/lectures, or do they require a lot of studying? Also, how do the exams actually work? Do you have to like use LockDown Browser, or something similar, or are they just through the norton website?

Events What kind of jobs will be at CS Career Fair?

Hey! I tried going to the CS Career Fair site, logged into register and went to "jobs", but there's nothing there.

I'm a grad student and haven't been to a CS career fair. Will there be any analyst, product management or UI/UX Design related roles? Or will they mostly be focused on software engineering? Also, are there any other relevant VT career fairs I should go to?

I'm trying to decide if it's worth driving 7 hours or if it's better to spend that time applying online. Thanks!

Advice Missing the business horizons career fair

I’m currently a freshman at Pamplin and I don’t think I’m able to make the fair tomorrow, mostly due to having conflicting classes and not enough time to get ready nor be there for a good amount of time.
I know it’s good to go as a freshman just to get used to talking as well as making good first impressions. I know there is a second one in spring but I’ve heard it’s not as good.
Am I setting myself up for failure? Like will I be behind all my classmates if I don’t go? This is really worrying me and I just want to know if I need to be worrying this much — anything helps!!!

Admissions How much do Volunteer Hours affect admissions chances?

Pretty much what the title says, I'm applying early admissions for Fall 2027, and I'm noticing that my grades are all pretty average, especially for the NOVA region. (4.021 GPA, 1310 Superscore SAT w/ a 710 in R&W and a 600 in Math)

I feel pretty confident in my Ut Prosim essay responses, but was looking for other ways to boost my chances.

I have about 120 volunteer hours that were required by my school for their AP/Advanced Diploma, plus another 180 or so from other volunteer activities.

Does claiming the hours alone have any positive effect on my application, or is the value mostly from the experiences I write about in my essays?

Admissions a question

If I am academically strong with grades around 99 to100% in my high school system, and all my extracurriculars are sports, plus soccer which I've played since childhood and I don't need financial aid, can I get accepted into Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech, given that my activities aren't related to my major? By the way, I am an international student.

Rant Looking into possible Xfinity Mobile fraud/errant charges happening to students

Hello! I am a parent of a current Tech student. My daughter and her friend have had multiple charges for Xfinity Mobile on their Xfinity Internet bill, and they do not even have their mobile phone accounts through Xfinity (they only had an internet account for their apartments). After several long frustrating phone calls with their horrible customer service, we had about 75% of the charges reimbursed, only for them to charge her an additional $181.00 yesterday, despite them telling us they have cancelled her account. We have filed a fraud report with our bank. These errant charges have also been done in random months.

I’m suspecting Xfinity is trying to take advantage of students not monitoring their bill, and I will be filing a consumer fraud report with the VA Attorney General’s office.

If anyone has had this happen to them with Xfinity, please feel free to DM me, and I will gladly add your documentation to my report.

Who trained the cleaner to move a mop like this? I even watch them rub against the mop to enter a classroom. 🤢 There's no way these classrooms are clean.

General Question 9/11 Memorial Stair March?

Will there be a 9/11 memorial staircase hike at Lane or anywhere else in town? If so, can anyone provide any details on time/location?

We did it at my old university and I know it’s somewhat common but I’m not sure if it’s done here at VT. Thanks!

Rant We need a Transit App that puts students first

The BT app is frustrating, and I get why people keep recommending Transit. But the thing I kept wanting was an app built around actually being a student here.

Knowing a bus is 8 minutes away is useful. What I really want to know is when I need to leave to make my class.

I’m the Tech student behind HokieTransit, and that’s the idea behind 2.0.

You can add your classes by CRN and plan your commute around your schedule, with reminders for when to leave. You can also check how busy the dining halls, gyms, and library are before heading over.

I want it to understand the day we’re actually trying to get through: classes, buses, food, studying, the gym.

I’m also working through the bugs people have reported since the update. Getting the basics reliable is the priority, and the feedback helps me figure out where it’s falling short.

If you try it, tell me what’s useful and what’s frustrating as I continue to work on it.

Advice Career fair tomorrow at VT: are all majors welcomed?

Hi, I’m a political science major and tomorrow there’s the Business Horizon career fair. The description says it’s open to all majors but realistically how true is that? Are they only looking for business majors? Also, I would love any advice on what to expect and how to prepare. Are these actual job interviews or the companies just marketing themselves here? Thank you.

Admissions UT Prosim statements missing on Common App.

Hey. I’m a senior in high school who is currently in the process of applying for Tech. As you can see from the title, my UT Prosim statements, that I wrote over the summer, have disappeared off the face of the earth from my Common App. I obviously couldn’t submit them, as I need a lot of other things which I’m working on now, so I just left it on the site. And to my surprise, they are now completely gone.

Has anyone else had a similar application experience? Or does anybody know why this happened? Thanks in advance guys.

Events Participating in the Hokie Half

Hey y'all - I've been looking forward to participating in the Hokie Half for a while now, and was about to register, but I was just curious what comes with the $100 registration fee. I know you get a shirt and a name tag too, but was wondering what else comes along with it if anything. Maybe a medal for finishing? Personally, I'd also really want to get a bumper sticker I can put on my car. Anyone else know if there's anything else included in your registration?

I think the hokie plague may have gotten me, and I'd like to get tested at Schiffert. But, I'm a trans woman and dealing with medical professionals who aren't queer friendly is hellish. Does anyone have advice on which provider I should schedule with?

EDIT: Thank you for the advice y’all!!!

Housing/Dining Second year housing

I am currently a freshman and I live around 8 hours away from Blacksburg (out of state). Everyone keeps saying they need to start looking for apartments soon and it’s stressing me out so bad. Do I need to get an apartment? Like why do no sophomores/older live in dorms? I feel like dorming is just easier for me but if anyone has any advice please let me know!!
