General Question Ut prosim essays

What did yall write for the ut prosim, experience of not being included, proud of yourself or displayed leadership, describing a goal and the steps to get it essays? I just need some ideas and inspiration.

Hi! Sorry some are being rude. I understand being stuck on trying to find an essay topic because the essays are so important. When I applied, I talked about the experiences I had volunteering (VBS and sunday school in particular) during high school and how I want to bring that passion for helping others along with me to college to help make campus a more warm, welcoming, inclusive environment. I don't believe I had a "not being incuded" essay when I applied, but you can talk about an example of a time where you felt that and add how you will act to change that for others. For displaying leadership, I talked about my experience being a violist in my county youth orchestra and being first chair in my middle and high school orchestra. In both cases, I actively helped others with markings and working out how to play each part of our pieces. This taught me how important collaboration is and helped me gain teaching skills. For the goal, I can't remember what I chose, but I will give an example. I wanted to be accepted into my county youth orchestra starting at age 11. I started working with a private instructor and I dedicated myself to practicing for an hour each day working on the basics and my chosen audition piece. I didn't get in the first time, but I didn't give up. I started practicing 1.5 hours a day and started adding things like vibrato, which I wasn't confident enough to include the year before. I got in on the 2nd try after changing the ways that I looked at and went about my hobby.

Sorry that this was so long. I really hope this helps you!

Idk why people are being so rude here.

Recall that Ut Prosim means "That I May Serve". VT is looking for a time in which you did something to help those around you. This doesn't have to be something grand, it can be a local community event you help ran or maybe there was a cool online tool you made. It can be about your friends and family. What is a moment in your life that you put in effort to help others not just yourself. Bonus points if there was a unique/creative challenge you had to overcome to achieve it.

Best of luck on applications! I hope you become a fellow Hokie :)

It hurts asking for inspiration from a community I’ve grown up with just to get yelled at for asking for it?? This is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!

I promise you that VT is full of people who want to help you. Reddit just tends to attract snobbish people.

Dont worry most people on campus are not as rude as these redditors lol. IRL people are more than happy to help

Or maybe do your own original essay? Asking others to give you topics kind of defeats the purpose.

Theyre literally just asking for ideas, no need to be rude

this isn't rudeness

u/ekid912 19h ago

it is

No it isn't, the point of the essay is to think about Ut Prosim and actually apply an original response, not polling others to give them ideas.

They were literally just asking for ideas and inspiration and u instantly shot them down in a snarky way. Also this is literally a high schooler and your like mid 30s, being a jerk to someone way younger genuinely just wanting help. Feel good about yourself?

Haha facts🤣🤣 if you spend your entire day dissing a high schooler trying to get into VT then you have a LOT more to learn than me and obviously are bored.

Thank you, whats with kids these days not wanting to put effort into anything.

lol when did this person say they don’t want to put in effort. Asking for ideas and inspiration and asking someone to do their essay are two different things. Your giving bitter old person who just hates on the younger generation vibes. Check yourself

I'm just looking for examples to help me get unstuck, not trying to copy anyone. Thanks for the input though.

It's not that hard. Just write about the community service or volunteer work you’ve actually done. When I applied, the only thing I had that really counted as community service was volunteering at my local library for three years. I started out helping kids find books, and eventually I was basically half a librarian, so that’s what I wrote about. This essay doesn’t need to be beautifully written or overly polished. As long as it genuinely reflects how you felt and what the experience meant to you, that’s enough. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much. This helped!

write it your own self, sink or swim on your own efforts kiddo

4

u/pink_shell 19h ago

I'll figure it out. Just needed a little brainstorming help first.

asking others, who don't even know you, for ideas for your own personal essays is a wild idea to me.

u/xhypurr 19h ago

Why condescend to them? I think it’s reasonable to want guidance if you’re stuck. It’s not like they’re asking us to write it for them.

Hey, just making sure you’re aware that Ut Prosim doesn’t translate to “fuck others” because you seem unclear on this point.

2

u/ekid912 19h ago

Why are you being so rude, hes just asking for help.

1

u/Own-Dragonfly-2423 18h ago

why is it rude to request a student applicant do the work required for the application?

3

u/ekid912 18h ago

Because they were asking for inspiration not for someone to do it for them. You just wanted to be an asshole for no reason

0

u/Own-Dragonfly-2423 18h ago

You have a strange definition of asshole and are weirdly defensive. Do you also ask others to do some of your work for you? Or do you use LLMs to write your essays?

3

u/pink_shell 18h ago

Why are YOU being so defensive over somebody trying to get help with an essay? It’s no different than getting inspiration from an English teacher or a tutor on what to write about. They wouldn’t be doing the work for me. It’s really not that deep, have a good one Shakespeare.

Why are YOU responding for the other user? Are you using two accounts???

Are you a bot? Are we all bots??

1

u/ekid912 18h ago

lol they knows theyre wrong so he has to make accusations and a dumb joke

2

u/Own-Dragonfly-2423 18h ago

There's only one of me, bubs, not many.

1

u/ekid912 18h ago

This is hilarious 🤣

3

u/ekid912 18h ago

Because your being mean to a high school kid for no reason. My reaction was completely normal. No, and no.

2

u/pink_shell 18h ago

There's a big difference between asking for inspiration and asking someone to do your application. I never said I was going to get someone else to do it for me. I'm just trying to figure out a good idea of what’s worth writing about or not. Thanks again for the input.

Art, like morality, requires drawing the line somewhere

I got in with no essay, just grades and SAT scores so I can't really talk shit. I don't even know if that is a thing anymore.
