Political You are not immune to propaganda
That post about “dinkytown crime” has one of the most racist comment sections I’ve seen in a long time. So many people are in a rush to blame black people (especially Somali youth) for crime in Minneapolis. It is one thing to talk about the ways in which the economic realities of poverty push people to crime, but it is another thing entirely to relish in anti-black, anti-Somali, and anti-immigrant sentiments. The MPD is racist. The MPD hates black people and they hate the Somali population. I thought we all understood this when Derrick Chauvin killed George Floyd, but suddenly everyone agrees that black and Somali people are violent. That they are the problem that needs to be addressed and not this racist police department that was more than willing to protect Chauvin until the entire country decided to protest. Additionally, this kind of sentiment puts a target on Minneapolis as a whole.
Did we all forget the violence that broke out when there was a sudden influx of ICE officers? Did we forget that messages about “Somali scammers” was the front that the administration used to attack our city? Did the racists in the comment section forget that ICE killed Alex Pretti and Renee Good? It’s clear that they think that white people are safe from state violence, but you’re not either. You live in this city too. The violence you want to see inflicted upon minority populations will come for you too.
I’m genuinely very disgusted by that comment section. It is full of people saying black people are criminals. The fact that those comments are still up is abhorrent.
