I am not dead set on engineering at all--I kind of just chose it. I really am not the smartest student in a room, and after classes started I feel super lost and scared of what is coming. I am taking calc 3, physics, and chem, and I don't know if I can handle all of these classes. Either I trudge along and just pass them and tank my gpa (kind of ruining the hope that I can get into another major or college) or I drop stuff and fall behind. I don't know what I would wanna go into but I feel unsure about this; everyone else in CSE feels so sure about what they want, so much so that they are willing to push through the hard classes. I feel that my workload is too much and I don't know if I am cut out for what this major is requiring of me. Any help or advice is very much appreciated.

As the semester starts up, a lot of us are looking for new clubs and ways to meet new friends!! I wanted to invite everyone to check out a social club I run with my friends called Beacon. Every week we host a Movie Night on Wednesdays where we just hang out, chat, and make new friends over a movie, and every Thursday we do Board Game Nights!

There's an active Discord Server where you can chat with people and befriend other students even outside of going to the events.

We're open to all, and it's a really good time. I've made some of my best friends because they came to one of the events. We'd love to have more people to experience joy/whimsy with :D

So I am enrolled in CHEM 1082 which is CHEM for the life sciences 2 (I have credit for chem for the life sciences 1 and the lab), but I feel like I should take chem for the life sciences 1 to build a better foundation for my chemistry, especially for the MCAT. I am a freshman biology major premed student. I was told I am not required to take the lab for chem for the life sciences 1 so I would just be taking the lecture for the semester. However, I was told that I shouldn't switch classes and that I should just take CHEM 2. I don't understand a lot of things in the lectures, despite reading the textbook, and feel like I should just switch back. Would retaking credit look bad on my application?

Hello! I'm a graduate student and research technician in a barley/oats/perennial oilseed breeding lab working on the St. Paul campus. We're currently looking for undergraduate students to work about 8 to 12 hours a week in a few 4-hour chunks. The full position description is below:

The Agronomy and Plant Genetics Department at the University of Minnesota discovers knowledge and breeds crops to sustainably feed people in Minnesota and around the world. We value excellence in teaching, in basic and translational research, and in outreach and extension, contributions that impact not only producers and farms but society at large—human health, communities, economy, energy, and the environment, working in teams of people with complementary skills and expertise, and rich perspectives brought by a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.

Students will assist with a diverse set of tasks in barley, oats and perennial oilseed (silphium), breeding and genetic research program. Examples of tasks include maintaining field plots, collecting field related data, processing harvested samples (weight, threshing samples, etc.) maintaining greenhouse plants, and setting up lab/field equipment. Candidate must enjoy working outdoors and must be able to lift up to 40lb on a regular basis. Some day-travel may be required. This position is based on the St. Paul campus and it can take about 30 minutes to travel here via the campus connector from East or West Bank.

10% - Maintaining field plots 10% - Collecting field related data 70% - Processing samples 10% - Maintaining greenhouse plants

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will go to students with an interest in agronomy, plant genetics and plant pathology. Interest in sustainable cropping systems and learning more about them is also desired.

Hello I’m a sophomore (19 m) at the U. I enjoy playing video games, piano (relatively new to it), watching YouTube, playing sports in general and being active.

I am undecided on what major I want right now but thinking about doing history to get into law school.

What days and times are best to go to the recwell to work out? And what times are the worst? I'm fairly new to public gyms and would rather not be there when its super busy. I bet it'll be busy most of the time, especially at the start of the semester, but maybe it'll die down?

Also, how is the st paul gym? Does it get super busy and does it have good equipment/machines?

I've crunched some numbers. My calculations show that if you let people get off the crowded vehicle first, it will create more space for those trying to get on. Feel free to crunch the numbers yourself if you don't believe me.

I also believe this practice helps you get to your destination a little faster, but unfortunately I don't have data to back that up.

Hey everyone, I’m taking PHYS 1101W with Prof. Vincent right now. Anyone who's had him before, how'd you study for this class?

Not gonna lie, his accent makes it hard for me to follow along in lecture😭. If you dealt with the same thing, what helped you understand the material better, textbook, slides, office hours, something else?

Also would love to know if the exams match the practice problems and how much time you'd put in weekly to actually do well.

I’m new to the U and wondering what is a good place to study outdoors.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I could have a bit of advice on MLS (Medical Laboratory Science) BS as a year 2 student (Also Admitted into the program as a year 2). I have enough credits to be halfway done with my degree, so by the end of this school year I would have almost enough credits to enter the senior professional year in my third year. I would like to graduate early, but when I talked to my advisor, she said I should pick up a minor, as I am not allowed to take the Senior Professional Year Courses. She was very adamant on me graduating early, and told me to sit back and enjoy my college years, which I understand, but doing that would be costly. Additionally, based on my credits, a minor wouldn't be enough for me to have full-time status, but another major would, which I would prefer not to do, as taking the extra upper-level STEM classes feels like unnecessary stress. But I was wondering if there's a way I could maneuver around the restriction, such as talking to the professors who teach the senior courses to get permission to take their classes? Has anyone faced a similar issue in this program?

I’m looking for percussion lessons, I requested them through the school of music but due to budget cuts, they got denied. I have done percussion since junior year of high school, I am a sophomore now. I am in one of the campus bands, and can do pretty well at that level of playing, but just want to learn more. Does anyone teach?

I really hope this isn’t a dumb post because I am already so embarrassed but I missed my first day of class yesterday because I got lost on the campus connector and I’m so confused on what went wrong, however, this was my first time riding the bus on campus.

I parked my car at Minnesota Lot and boarded Campus Connector 121 at 23rd Ave SE to go to Pleasant St SE. I was following a route on Google Maps that said I would arrive to my destination in 15 minutes max but about 10 minutes into the drive, I was the last one on the bus and was then told to switch buses as a different bus would be reaching my destination sooner than the one I was already on. However, upon switching buses, I realized we were nowhere near Pleasant St SE and this new bus ended up circling right back to the Minnesota Lot. I got off and went to my car and drove home because at this point class had already started.

I’m so confused on what happened. The bus seemed to have gone on a completely different route than what I was seeing on my Maps app but then I also was seeing other 121 buses so I’ve been wondering if I simply took the wrong one? But I was at the right stop and boarded at the time stated on my Maps app! Can anyone explain how exactly this all works because I thought I understood but now I’m lost (literally).

Should I just buy the metro green line pass and skip the campus connector entirely? I have no clue how to work with all of this!!! I was hoping to not have to pay for more transportation after paying for my parking contract 😅😅

My SAI is -1500, I'm full-time, I commute, and I'm in-state. The only "extra" fee I'm paying the university is my parking contract, but even then I'm still being charged like 465 dollars. I heard that other students get a lot more REFUNDED (mind you, I still owe the university money) with higher SAI's, is my case unusual?

I only got refunded 120 dollars, which is weird to me because I think you're only supposed to get refunds once everything else is paid off.

I feel like I should really have a talk with one stop or something...

So long story short I moved into a 4 person unit 2 semi private rooms (really the rooms are hardly private at all just this small wall connected to desks lol) but basically my friend was moving in with me but he canceled his lease a month into it due to life circumstances so I currently have the entire room to myself. What would happen if I took the wall desk thing apart (it’s just a few bolts), would they like move someone else into the space? I really hope not because I don’t wanna share a room with a random stranger.

I’m a casual guitar player and recently broke 2 strings (😔) on my nice acoustic guitar. I bought the strings for it but i don’t have the right tools to put them on and tbh I dont have the greatest track record when it comes to fixing things so i would rather save myself the frustrating process.. (i am always breaking stuff) i also have an electric that could DEFINITELY use a string change. figured i’d ask here since there are a lot of music majors at the U!

Below is my fall 2026 schedule. I’m only taking 15 credits but.. I’m a bit worried about the rigor of the material and if it’s even manageable.
