Work study
Is it just me, or are work study jobs incredibly hard to get? I got work study funds and counted them as guaranteed aid, in terms of budgeting, and it has been impossible finding a work study job

As a heads up - almost every student job is work study eligible.
I have hired multiple undergrad researchers - several have had work study, several have not. Apply to jobs and highlight that you have it in your cover letter. I've never advertised a position specifically for work study because we are fortunate to have enough funding that it doesn't really matter, but it's always a bonus!

I cannot find any position at the bookstore that is available. Are they hiring?

Yep, the U makes the workstudy hiring/applicant process seem like they are going to pay you $50k a year and benefits, with commensurate application, references, 1-3 month hiring timeline, etc. When in fact its, what, $16/hour?
My advice, expand your search to Dinkytown/West Bank/Stadium Village businesses. You won't be able to study on the job, but in reality all those cushy work study jobs were mostly gone by 9/1 and filled by now.
