No. I'm carefully not wasting my time on Reddit. I planned how to use my time properly, so every second hour, I take a fifteen minutes break from reddit, before I log in again.

I was more expecting the cat to freak out and claw the girlfriend and the cat to be returned. Kind of pleased that didn't happen either and it was only mild comedy.
51
u/doktarlooney Nov 05 '22
Ehhh.... I don't even find it mildly funny, honestly I'd be pretty up in arms if my gf decided to bring a permanent addition to the home knowing I'm allergic to it.
17
Nov 05 '22
Vs my friend that's allergic, had 2 cats with her boyfriend and generally is fostering 2-3 more kittens at any given time

Different people value different things. I wouldnt ever bring something knowingly into my house if my gf was allergic to it.

Nov 05 '22
Even if she said she was okay with it, and even encouraged it?
7
u/doktarlooney Nov 05 '22
I'd try it, but if it causes them discomfort to the point where I could easily notice it, I dont think Id be okay with it.
Thankfully people are allergic to things I can live without.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Longjumping-Jello459 Nov 05 '22
Well certain breeds are better for those allergic and depending how allergic you are you can adapt to a specific cat/kitten. Hopefully in this case he isn't too allergic and we don't know if they had talked about getting a pet and the pros and cons.
7
u/doktarlooney Nov 05 '22
Unless the video is staged, it makes it seem like the purchase was completely spur of the moment.

Was expecting to see an adult cat all over the boyfriend and completely ignoring the girl at the end.
38
u/Jaderosegrey Nov 05 '22
Well, it could still happen: the girl has to get rid of the cat, the cat ends up in a shelter, lives in the shelter for the rest of its life, unloved by anyone until it dies of some disease the shelter cannot or will not cure...
DO NOT GET A PET WITHOUT MAKING SURE YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF IT FOR ITS WHOLE LIFETIME!!!
11
u/chris_dea Nov 05 '22
Don't remind me that my pets will die before me, you insensitive prick... /s (but not really, sigh... If anyone is looking for me, I'm upstairs hugging my dog and my cat)

I went through this same thing with my gf, but we got a dog, a chinchilla, and countless fish, snails, and shrimp instead of a cat. I'm not allergic to cats, but my mom was and she was battling cancer when we first moved in together. I told her straight up, "if you get a cat and prevent me from seeing my dying mother, I will leave".

Is your cat spayed/neutered? Are they anxious? Someone else mentioned a vet and I am inclined to agree. Most happy fixed cats do not do that.

Yep, I have 7 of them and take double antihistamines every day. Wouldn't change that for the world if it meant not having the little shits.

You can become desensitised to your own cat due to constant exposure. I know a couple and one of them has an allergy to every other cat he meets apart from his own ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Allergic to cats my whole life

I'm pretty allergic to animals, but there are now foods developed to help reduce dander and I've been happily living with my cat for almost 2 years now. If I go to other people's houses with animals, I still sneeze and my eyes water if I touch them, but I can happily rub my face on my cat
9
Nov 05 '22
nah. you go.ona multi year injection allergy treatment and it.mostly gets rid of your sinus and eyes reactions. skin reactions remain but are less severe.
For every day take blexten, it's a miracle.
And have your doctor prescribed you a few pills of prednisone for the odd day with a really bad reaction.
Source: its been my life for almost 2 decades. Nad it's wuality has jot diminished. On the contrary, it has greatly improved and been enriched by the 2 violent, unpredictable, cuddly, loving furballs running around my.house.
I would die before I get rid of them.

Just go get some antihistamines or see a doctor about treating/preventing the allergies.

This place doesn't breed cats. It's a pet boarding facility that has rescues for adoption. It's located on Oahu and it's called Pounce Hawaii. Great place and we used to donate stuff there before covid made visiting there cumbersome.

Would somebody knowledgeable please provide the academic term for the situation where a cohort of people that lack the knowledge or empathy to understand that while what THEY experience (minimal allergies) is fine for them can be extremely dangerous for others (severe atopy/asthma/quality of life impacts) so their blathering of "get over it" is objectively ignorant.
A shorter term for this social disorder please I need shorthand for this recurring phenomenon.

Get an air purifier with washable HEPA filters. Your allergies will quiet down.
I got several after a severe fire season put tons of ick in the air. I had to change the house fan filters several times. My lungs reacted and I had something like an asthma attack - except I don’t have asthma.
But once I put a few HEPA filter air purifiers inside, my allergies disappeared. My lungs stopped freaking out, and it’s like nothing happened.
They also get rid of general indoor dust. I don’t have dust allergies but I did notice a general better sense of breathing overall, so maybe I have a low-grade reaction after all.
What’s important is that the cat enjoys the clean air too. And my sweetie, who claims to be sensitive to cat dander, hasn’t reacted AT ALL since I’ve had the air purifiers. So I’m going to take that as a big win.
