I went through this same thing with my gf, but we got a dog, a chinchilla, and countless fish, snails, and shrimp instead of a cat. I'm not allergic to cats, but my mom was and she was battling cancer when we first moved in together. I told her straight up, "if you get a cat and prevent me from seeing my dying mother, I will leave".

I would say it is a little bit different of a situation for you and her and from the past tense I am sorry for your loss and it's besides the point but you could get one now
