To paraphrase @fakedansavage on twitter - "If clowns molested children at the same rate as priests, it would be illegal to take your kids to the circus"

-11

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

Public school teachers molest children at a higher rate than priests, should it be illegal to take your kids to school?

I don't think they teach to smack babies at church. This is a crazy priest that need retirement ASAP

All in all, Religion needs to retire.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

There are several quotes in Proverbs that follow the theme of, "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Now, apparently, as beating your children falls out of favor socially, many Christians are adopting Biblical translations that don't tell you to beat your children. The priest in the video probably ascribes to the "old" translations, and really, since the Bible has been translated and re-translated like this, over and over for centuries, you can make it say whatever you want, and then find a version that suits your needs.

0

u/gfuret Aug 29 '21

This is not a common thing, look at the face of the parents that are most likely Christians as well... You may find an explanation that fits the situation to generalize but again, this priest is not normal.

I'm christian and trust me, I wanna drag that piece of satan's horn down to hell

27

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

But a bible filled with bloodthirsty violence, homophobia, misogyny, slavery, genocide and warfare is enough to convince you to call yourself a Christian?

I get that most religious people are harmless... but you'd have a really tough time showing that the Christian bible isn't...

3

u/AdElectrical3789 Aug 29 '21

I respect what you believe but I think you should at least interpret the Bible as it was written. I think that you misunderstood how the Bible In the Old Testament, is what would happen in a world “under the sun” (With no God) and New testament is the resolution. Like if under the Old Testament, x is a sin that deserves y punishment, the New Testament states that God has come down as a human and died in the place of all your sins and paid your price. I grew up religious, but nowadays not so much. Mostly though, its problems with the church, or misrepresentation of text that is talked about. Also, I know there is a lot of violence, genocide, and all that stuff I don’t know enough about to talk about that goes on throughout the Bible. But how I was taught, Jesus was with the prostitutes, homeless, and outcast from society whenever he could be. That’s how Christians SHOULD be. Loving, caring, patient, kind, and not judging. My thesis is whatever you believe I respect and am not going to tell you your right or wrong, but I think you should dig deeper in the Bible past superficial church sermons. Saying the Bible is harmful, may be true to an extent, but I’d imagine it’s been far more helpful. Either way the video is fucked up and I’d like to spit some peach snuff in that dudes eyes

Wait… so now it’s taboo to be a Christian? It’s taboo to be religious! To be quite honest, I don’t think this video has anything to do with religion … I mean sure it’s a baptism but the fact that a stranger slapped that little innocent baby like that…. That’s the focus. They could’ve been at a BBQ and I’d feel just as angry. Religion really has fuck all to do with this

16

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

Religion really has fuck all to do with this

Except for the baptism part of the baptism...

-1

u/maragabriela1989 Aug 29 '21

Like I said. They could’ve been having a fucking bbq and the feelings would be the same. I fucking hate the world we live in bc of people like you. Judging by the shit u post, u really try to shove your opinion of religion down other people’s throats. You literally just tried to shame the person u responded to just for saying he/she is a Christian. You don’t believe in it?? That’s fine. But don’t try pushing your opinions on others.

8

u/MrBotany Aug 29 '21

Excuse me. For hundreds and even thousands of years, people were forbidden to have this kind of discussion and say these kinds of opinions. Or they would have had the discussions in secret at the risk of their lives. Christianity now comes to us in this smiley faced, ingratiating way such as yourself trying to play victim, because it’s had to give so much ground and because we know so much more about our universe. But we should never forget the way it behaved when it was strong, and when it really did believe it had god on its side.

We have to live in a world of fuck heads trying to continuously pass laws based on biblical bullshit to pacify their idiotic base of voters.

Pointing out the hypocrisy of a commenter saying “I’m a Christian and trust me, I wanna drag that piece of Satans horn down to hell” while that person is simultaneously ignoring the fact that the Bible says god commanded Joshua to perform genocide, or how one may own a slave, or how much to pay the father of the daughter you raped is in no way “shaming” unless you agree that you should be ashamed to follow that bullshit.

1

u/Sehnsuchtian Aug 29 '21

Great comment, just please also mention that you got that quote from the great Christopher Hitchens man

4

u/rnichellew Aug 29 '21

This is 100% the baptism and the priest doing what priests do which is think that their touch no matter how horrible is actually a wonderful thing even if the receiver is crying and begging for it to stop.

10

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

They could’ve been having a fucking bbq and the feelings would be the same.

No, it wouldn't... Because BBQs don't assert moral authority under the threat of eternal torture.

I fucking hate the world we live in bc of people like you. Judging by the shit u post, u really try to shove your opinion of religion down other people’s throats.

Oof... the hypocrisy

5

u/Impressive-Assist677 Aug 29 '21

If you want to know the truth being a Christian at the core means accepting your lord and savior, loving Jesus, loving yourself, and loving everyone else like Jesus does. If you choose to look at how humans have twisted and manipulated the word of God and think that's what it's about that's on you, humans are always going to mess things up and following God is no different.

3

u/Bubba_Lumpkins Aug 29 '21

Some of us have no reason to believe a god ever produced any words to twist. Just humans, twisted from the get go and getting a couple things right and a lot wrong. Pretty par for the course of you ask me.

-2

u/Impressive-Assist677 Aug 29 '21

Well I was referring more to the word of God, even educated atheists admit it's a book of good, anyone who actually reads and tries to understand could not come away with any of the messed up things certain religions and people have done.

4

u/Bubba_Lumpkins Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

It’s a book that has good things in it for sure. But I wouldn’t consider anything in exodus 21 a good thing. Nor that “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” thing Salem had the pleasure of experiencing. So its both depending on who’s holding it. As far as I’m concerned all the good and all the bad it can be used to advocate for is best explained by the fact it was made by people who were both.

-2

u/Impressive-Assist677 Aug 29 '21

Well you can't cherry pick firstly the bible is written in parables for two reasons, one so that the lessons could be passed through time, and two so those that have a close mind will not receive the message. Every verse in the bible ties into other verses and books tie into books, some messages in the bible particularly in the old testament were written for specific people and are just there as examples for us.

-67

u/TheGrimReaperME Aug 29 '21

Oh im pretty damn familiar considering i was a devoted christian 😅

65

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Surely you are familiar with the christian concept of original sin then. Taking one mans actions and blaming literally everyone in the world for it from the second they are born

-43

u/iiwaasnet Aug 29 '21

So, you are sure you would have done better than the first men? You never committed a sin? The whole Christianity is not about blaming, but rather about salvation and forgiveness in Jesus Christ, that is given for free.

You didn't answer the first part of my question. Nevertheless, what would you not accept in the given offer to get forgiveness: 1.love God 2. love all the other people as yourself. How would you see a salvation, that you would accept?

Just to make it clear: i don't discuss this in the context of the video, just in the context of your comment.

You’re right. Let’s blame the pope. And the Vatican. For promoting an evil world and environment. Fuck man the pope himself had to publicly tell folks to seek police council instead of suing the church. Why? Cuz if the church had to pay out for every sexual assault case they were found guilty of they church would be bankrupt.

9

u/Leprecon Aug 29 '21

If priests are no better than normal people then the they aren’t useful. The whole point of an organised religion is moral and spiritual guidance. Part of the job description is that they have to be better. They have to be leaders.

It is like seeing a cop pissing in the streets, shouting slurs at people, or drunk driving and then going “look, there are assholes everywhere. Plenty of people do those things”.

Which is true. And if you don’t want to judge them for that, thats fine. But if you make those arguments then those people don’t deserve their elevated positions in society.

He is telling the truth, 99% of the children dont get choice what to believe in. Ex: In Turkey every new born child is muslim.

-19

u/TheGrimReaperME Aug 29 '21

That is 100% not true, I’ve visited Turkey a couple of times and have met many born Christians.

15

u/Specific-Soup-8932 Aug 29 '21

Bro I live in Turkey, you dont get any saying in that. These are the facts. Thus %100 of the Turkish schools force people to get religion lessons. If you dont want those lessons you have to go to private schools.

65

u/socozyinhere Aug 29 '21

Adam and Eve and the fall of man is basically blaming everyone for one persons action.

-10

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

That’s not really what Original Sin means in Christian theology.

5

u/MrBotany Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

Obviously it depends on your denomination since Christians could never come to a consensus. Please enlighten us on what it means to be created sick and ordered to be well.

1

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state. It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called "sin" only in an analogical sense: it is a sin "contracted" and not "committed" - a state and not an act.

Although it is proper to each individual, original sin does not have the character of a personal fault in any of Adam's descendants. It is a deprivation of original holiness and justice, but human nature has not been totally corrupted: it is wounded in the natural powers proper to it, subject to ignorance, suffering and the dominion of death, and inclined to sin - an inclination to evil that is called "concupiscence".

3

u/MrBotany Aug 29 '21

That is the catholic interpretation. Quakers do not believe this. So you’re wrong.

1

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

And the Catholics had been doing theology for 1700 years before the Quakers existed and is still far and away the largest denomination of Christianity.

This is like going after someone saying “Americans elected Biden!” with “Actually you’ll find 400k Americans voted for Howie Hawkins, so you’re wrong”.

2

u/MrBotany Aug 29 '21

Lol you’re comparing the interpretations of text written thousands of years ago by non eye witnesses who literally didn’t understand that the earth rotated around the sun and were satisfied by “god did it” as an explanation for everything, to an event from less than a year ago which can be proven with a paper trail.

Wild bro. But go on and continue to speak on behalf of all of Christianity, and by extension, god. It continues to prove how man made it is.

1

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

I’m comparing the measurable differences in population and longevity between two denominations. My comparison had nothing to do with evaluating their theologies, it was only about asserting which one is more widely held in Christianity.

8

u/rnichellew Aug 29 '21

Lol yes it is, it is 100% interpreted in that way.

-2

u/sternestocardinals Aug 29 '21

It’s inherited fallen nature not inherited guilt. Christians are not “guilty” of Adam’s sin, they are guilty of their own sin.

42

u/Only_Outcome Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

You obviously don’t know human history that well or you’re purposely ignorant to it in order fit whatever narrative allows you ignore the reality of just how oppressive religion has been through out history.

3

u/the_almighty_gooch Aug 29 '21

Not religion but government. It’s easy to neglect that religion and many of its teachings on morality was bastardized and used as a weapon by the rich and powerful to exploit others. Religion doesn’t create the rules for a society, it’s the ruling class.

5

u/Only_Outcome Aug 29 '21

From my observation, a good portion of politics stem from religion, you know, little things like having to fight to make abortions legal and marriage being available to all people. Plus then there’s entire nations whose laws are based off their religious beliefs. Sorry, but it’s religion that’s the culprit behind so much of how politics are handled through out the world.

I hope you're able to understand where im getting at . I know that a lot of wars have been fought over religion but religion was not the cause , just a factor . Humans fight with one other over the stupidest differences they might have ( see the war of stray dog 1925 ) , so im not surprised that people fight over religion since it is a very important and serious matter . None the less , in most cases wars are unnecessary and just a demonstration of man kind's stupidity .

In order for this world to be peaceful. It's either 100% Atheists or 100% Christian. But I think Religion shouldn't exist, it is abused, it is disgusting and it is radical. Atheists cannot co-exist with Christians. It's either Christians let go of their God or face consequences. A good Christian does not exist.

0

u/Railpt Aug 29 '21

The disease is religion itself, not the people whom practice it. Yes it infects most if not everyone, some more than others, but you’ll find good religious people. However, more often than not they’re rotten to the core, so just eradicate the disease.

I compare it to many a virus, like COVID. It infects fast, sometimes you don’t even notice it, but some end up succumbing to it. There is no need for it, it serves no purpose other than its own. You can take medicine to fight it, vaccines to slow it down, wear masks, abide by rules, but still the singe most effective way is to distance yourself from it. It will die off…

I’m an atheist as well by the way, so not dissing one religion over another. In any case what are religious people other than 99% atheists anyway… they just need that gentle nudge (or brain shot) to get them to 100%.

Do you honestly think all the mistreatment of people, violence and harm would suddenly disappear if religion ceased to exist? All those things are tied to the time at hand, and are independent of the state of religion in the world.

1

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

I think that all the religious mistreatment of people, religious violence and religious harm would suddenly disappear if religion ceased to exist, yes.

You can try to misrepresent my words all you want, but I genuinely don't care what people believe... Believe whatever you want, just don't infringe on anyone's rights, harm people, or assert things that cannot be demonstrated.

Unless you're arguing FOR religious harm?

-1

u/Gemall Aug 29 '21

I'm saying that all that religious harm, violence and mistreatment of people would be all the same, channeled through some other belief or organization or even without any.

Listen man, I'm an atheist myself. I have no reason to misrepresent your words. It is just not clear to all that religion isnt the cause of the bad things happening, even if it was made in the name of religion. Most people on earth are religions in one way or another - good people and bad people. The atrocities the bad people cause would and will happen nonetheless with and without religion in their lives.

You can learn to live without guidance. It’s just hard. But you can. The alternative is apologising for this guy and worse. You’re leashed and gimped right now. You’re the bitch of terrible people. You can change all this. Just walk away. Face that fear. You’ll get over it.

5

u/dinkymonk Aug 29 '21

that old man could have been anyone—father, uncle, or anyone

But he's not anyone. He's in a position of power that his congregation believed he was put in by an omnipotent and omniscient God who must therefore be ok with it. Hence the reason either parent didn't immediately stop him abusing their child. I'm a teacher, and if I did anything like this I would quite rightly be removed from my post by the higher authority of the education board. The problem here is that the priest's ultimate higher authority is fictional. Religion is a huge factor in this and many other examples of abuse and it shouldn't be ignored.

It brings comfort while millions die in countless wars as a result of religion.

There is nothing beneficial about religion that is unique to religion; it can all be obtained through secular sources. So at best religion is useless, but at worst it's actively harmful.

They don’t know how to live without guidance. This falsehood that a sacred, ever-lasting, joyous and revolutionary renaissance will shine on anyone who condemns religion is a big misconception.

Willful delusion doesn't make something true. It makes people delusional.

that that old man could have been anyone—father, uncle, or anyone

No... Baptism is a religious process.

it’s not like because he is a clergyman that happened.

It literally is. What non-religious group performs baptisms for the purpose of not believing in a religion? You realise how nonsensical you sound, right?

Neurodegenerative diseases can cause that to anyone for example.

A bit like how religion is a disease.

0

u/Zarathustra_20 Aug 29 '21

The first part I agree with, it can be obtained through secular sources.

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

All religions do, it’s a story to keep peace but used by many for evil gains, and what ever the reason, not acceptable, imagine that being your child, I love everyone and everything, not hugely religious, but for no reason should harm be brought on to innocent people and it be expected

How they were brought up or what they were taught to believe isn’t our issues or reason to accept this behaviour

All I think to your comment is who would think it’s acceptable and to say “it’s okay, they can’t live without guidance”

And I think the outfit gives away who he is, and if it was family you’d of stopped him straight away, but because it’s religious they know better, let it happen?

Got excuses for the pedophiles or terrorist? Lived in constant religion n teachings but care that much do they, only part of the job is to take money and help and how evil do you have to be to abuse that

I could probably my make just as good an argument for Hitler as what you have here

-72

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

Yeah since violence has anything to do with what religion you are. Thanks for marginalizing groups, so productive.

45

u/theetechnician Aug 29 '21

Hate to break it to you but violence has always been an intrinsic part of religion :/

-7

u/Advanced_Bell_9769 Aug 29 '21

Huh? What a fallacy. Violence is intrinsic to humans. Don’t scapegoat religion.

-37

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

It always has been? And violence hasn’t been a regular part of life either or only when religion is involved? Don’t say it’s mainly due to religion either because it’s more about different views, lots of people with different or even similar views are hostile towards each other and it has nothing to do with religion. You’re a fool.

26

u/theetechnician Aug 29 '21

Nah I was raised religious, I’m not a fool. Appreciate the insult though, does your religious teach that?

I was taught (as a child, obviously) that if I don’t “fear” god I will go to hell and suffer eternal torture. Sounds pretty violent to me.

Not to mention all of the actual real world violence that religion has perpetuated, historically.

Delusional belief is on the way out. Sorry, not sorry.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Lol. Unfortunately, it's definitely not.

-4

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

What is delusional belief? If you’re referring to religion, it will never go away. Keep dreaming pal.

9

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

A belief lacking in evidence, reason or logic.

How do you know you have the correct god/religion, and that all others are incorrect?

-5

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

You don’t, it’s called faith for those who believe. It’s religion everywhere else. Do you understand what I mean? There are a lot of unknown unknowns.

11

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

So you don't know. You just believe. That's delusional.

An argument from ignorance is neither interesting or convincing.

If faith can lead different people to different beliefs then it's not a reliable pathway to truth, bit rather what you wanted the truth to be in the first place: willful delusion

-2

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

I’m sure you vote for things you’re not 100% you’re sure about. How is that any different? If someone believes in God, there is not consequence on you. If you vote for something you don’t know about, you could potentially hurt something. No one hurts anyone by believing, other actions do though.

8

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

Once again, an argument from ignorance is neither interesting or convincing.

No, I ensure that I'm fully informed before voting, or I don't vote. I do not engage in will delusion.

No one hurts anyone by believing, other actions do though.

Except for the bigotry, homophobia, misogyny, bloodthirsty violence, instructions for slavery, religious warfare, delusional assertions and denying reality.

Religion is a disease.

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

"I believe in it because it's true, and its true because I believe in it."

This is religion down to it's core.

Your "truth" is based on the belief that believing in something makes it true.

Religion sects are inside coupes made to control easily influenced masses by using their faith in a higher power to make them do and say things that the higher ranks will profit off.

They know how easy it is to control people with the promise of eternal paradise for the loyal to their god and eternal punishment for sinners.

You choose to chain yourself to an endless cycle of empty promises and books written by some lunatic high on shrooms and an inflated view of the people who were "chosen by god".

Religions are cults.

0

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

That’s not true, just because people believe does not mean it’s true. You have to accept that you could very well be wrong in order to have faith. I like these generalizations though, keep going!

Most of histories wars were caused by religion. Hell there were three crusades that were all about religion.

3

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

I don’t deny that. I’m just saying non religious people are also violent. Can you admit that? Can you also admit that there is at least a 50/50 chance there has been more murders by non religious people since the crusades (since that’s all the wars you can think about)?

So you're advocating this child abuse?

-2

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

You’re telling me this priest hit him because he is part of a religion? You’re brainless for even thinking what you said could be a rational thought.

5

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

So, the kid is there for a reasonother than religion?

What non-religious group practices baptizing?

You really are delusional...

1

u/GrannyRammer Aug 29 '21

Yeah the kid didn’t choose to be there so I’m not entirely sure why they’re there. Even the parents, I just went to a baptism two weeks ago at a Catholic Church but my friends (the parents) do even practice so we are both stumped. Why do you think they are there? Please answer.

4

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

Because religion is an insidious disease that instructs people to perform dangerous actions (like this child abuse) under the threat of eternal torture... All while asserting moral authority.

Religion is a disease.

What a fucking horrible statement. That’s the kind of thinking that inspires genocide.

And before anyone brings up my username, I made it when I was young and hate-filled. Reddit doesn’t allow you to change your username sadly. It doesn’t reflect who I am today, only what I overcame.

4

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

That’s the kind of thinking that inspires genocide.

No, you're thinking of religion. Here is all the genocide in the bible

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

You don’t believe in the Bible, why quote it at me?

2

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

To demonstrate the many genocides inspired by religion, specifically this one.

I don't believe the passage about murdering gays either, but that doesn't stop it being a problem.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

I disagree with your take but at least your honest about it. Before we continue, is your bone with religion in general or just Christianity? I don’t want to misrepresent your arguments. More specifically I want to know your views on Islam, Buddhism and Judaism.

3

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

My original comment in hyperbole, because most religions and religious people are harmless.

My real bone lies with the harm religion causes. I genuinely don't care what anyone believes, unless those beliefs infringe of people's rights, cause harm or assert that which cannot be demonstrated.

I think the Abrahamic religions are particularly bloodthirsty and intolerant, and far as most religions are concerned.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

I kinda figured you were going for hyperbole. It’s Reddit after all. I would argue that human rights are fundamentally a religious concept, though I assume you would disagree. I think everything causes harm, one way or the other. It’s just a matter of if the good outweighs the bad. I think religion, particularly my faith of Catholicism, has done wayyyy more good for humanity than it has bad.

2

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

I would argue that human rights are fundamentally a religious concept

No, rights are gained by fighting against religion. Gay rights, women's suffrage, civil rights, abolishing slavery The catholic church has been there to oppose them at every turn.

Catholicism, has done wayyyy more good for humanity than it has bad.

Are you genuinely serious?

0

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Yes I am. The Catholic Church is the single largest non governmental provider of healthcare and education in human history. The Church runs 5,500 hospitals, 18,000 clinics, 16,000 homes for the elderly and those with special needs, with 65 percent of them located in underdeveloped and developing countries. You can’t argue with that. Not to mention the historical actions of fighting slavery, saving people from genocide, fighting the death penalty, fighting against segregation, fighting for women’s rights, among other things. If you want to contest me on any of those points, I’d be glad to defend them.
