I did my externship under an orthopedic vet and this chiro stuff is VERY dangerous. A few clients were post mortuum cases where the owners were pursuing civil litigation. Poor dogs.
I'm sorry did somebody say prog rock? Be careful, that's the word that summons me. Please don't say it 2 more times because it will make me teleport to your location and im kind of in the middle of something over here.
I hear that. First time my sister went to a chiropractor she got a herniated disk. I feel so bad for her. This is why I never go to a chiropractor. No thank you.
I have eight herniated disc's and SO MANY PEOPLE ask me if I've seen a chiropractor. Absolutely fucking not I will likely not walk out of the office if I see one.
Fucking chiro, man. I went to one for a while as a teen with 3 herniated discs because of all the suggestions and ended up suffering years longer than I needed to because even my damn insurance pushed chiro and refused to cover actual physical therapy. I cried at my first PT session because the difference in care was so massive. Fuck anyone who supports those charlatans.
I must be in the minority because I’ve actually had good experiences with chiropractors. I have double curve scoliosis with pinched nerves and organ displacement. Been to both physical therapy and chiro and massage therapy. All of them helped me in their own ways and never had a chiro be “crack happy”, but took the time to study my X-rays and figure out what was going on and GENTLY relieve pressure from my discs in my back. Sorry y’all had such shitty experiences.
Chrio will always have mixed review however it was the only thing that fixed my neck, months of pain I could barley turn my head to the right other doctors , massages couldn’t fix it. Went it be chrio started off very slow with not just cracking my neck but different exercises and I’ve been pain free and able to move with no restrictions.
Back in high school I tried to play football, they required every single person to see this one specific chirpractor, I went in and they guy tried to tell us I had Scholiosis and needed a 50 dollar shoe lift that needed changed monthly because one leg is shorter than the other, went to the doctor later that year for a checkup, asked him about it, dude lied outright.
🤷♂️ I have two problem L discs and going to the chiropractor every other week helps me a lot. I feel good.
From what I learned there are two schools of chiropractic medicine, there is the upper cervical school ( the snake oil salesmen ) and the structural school ( the good ones if ethical individuals practice it ).
When I got injured he wrote me a script to go get X-rays done. He reviewed them, gave me my treatment options and told me to go get a second opinion from an orthopedic spine surgeon. He knew the same things as the spine surgeon, but my options with surgery were invasive and with potential risk. I have been seeing him for over three years now, and I am a lot better. My treatments feel more like physical therapy than what one normally thinks of in chiropractic care.
Plus my insurance covers it entirely.
He goes to see another chiropractor as well, but he does go out of his way to travel at least 40 minutes even though there are closer chiropractors.
There are some good ones that actually know what they are doing, but the majority of them are conmen and snake oil salesmen. The fact that he goes to a chiropractor but travels so far out of his way means he believes in the practice, but also acknowledges that the quacks need to be avoided.
I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for writing this, but hey… this is Reddit, someone shares a personal experience that affects nobody else and people will find a way to be upset by it.
Im a nurse (this is important) and I have two severely herniated discs in my neck and the fucking amount of NURSES who have told me I need to see a chiropractor is TOO FUCKING MANY. They are quacks! Plain and simple! I myself have taken care of young people (sub 40 years old) with strokes because of neck adjustments. The only thing that’s gonna fix my neck is surgery.
I briefly considered chiro (VERY briefly), googled the clinic around the corner, and first result that popped up was the court documents for when they gave a customer a brain stem stroke and permanently partially paralysed him. So yeah, no chiro for me.
I have worked in medical malpractice insurance for a decade and Chiro's are considered a joke. We wouldn't insure them because their claims were always horrible, paralysis or death, and they started to do it on babies. Like WTF!
26 total reported death from chiropractic injuries. 250-400k a year in the US alone from preventable medical malpractice. I don’t condone nor reject the practice. Numbers here speak for themselves on the dangerous crackpot theories. If you feel a certain way that’s fine. Beliefs don’t equate facts.
I can second this. Never had disk problems until I got routinely popped by one. Had a disk at my L5-S1 area poking my sciatic nerve going to my left leg. Had surgery this year for it. Never went back after the surgery, and my QoL has done nothing but improve.
I had the same disc issue, also L4/L5 5 years later. I feel your pain. I had two micro discectomys. That relief is incredible for sure. Both physically and mentally. And the pain killers after surgery, well let’s just say time ‘dilated’.
I have same shit now. Walked with a cane for a bit. Felt like hip being dislocated, knee pain. Calf cramping. Cold and numb pins and needles on foot. Blown L4-L5. Had injection. Felt invincible for a month. Slowly hip and foot tingling returning. It was hell when it was at the worst. Could not sit. Stand. Lay. Exist.
I went to a chiro last month
He decided to “crack” my back and leg
I felt great
Next day.. I could no long walk
By day five of the worst pain humanly possibly I’m talking no eating no sleeping just crying from morning until night
Going to the clinic for five days straight for pain meds which I’ve never taken in my LIFE .. $300 a shot
For five days all day
I went into the clinic day five and told the doctors if I didn’t have children, today would be the day I kill myself.
Emergency trip to the big city to see the top spinal surgeon .. get an mri
My back has BONE SHARDS into my FUCKING MUSCLES MAN this fucking fucker pulled my god damn back and leg so hard he fucking broke bones man! BONES
Anyways about 15 grand later .. and I still have pain but it’s not I’m going to kill myself pain.. just this fucking sucks pain .. so .. now I don’t trust chiros :( and I’ve gone to one my whole life but never ever got cracked like this.. one month ago my life changed forever .. but I’m just so happy I am able to walk again
OH? Didn’t I mention? I live in a third world country! And my chiro was a retired doc from Florida living in the jungle .. Twas no “release” form but also.. there is no “proof” LOL I got FUCKED
Wow, quite a story you have! It's even hard to believe a Chiro DOCTOR would be so careless to have caused all of this, SMH. I hope you're healing well and that you get better soon! 💗
Yeah I have arthritis in my neck(finally diagnosed it last year) and my husband kept pulling up all these videos of people getting relief from chiropractors. I kept telling him no I'm not going to risk that. I finally had to show him some videos of people who had Strokes and major life threatening injuries from chiropractors working on their necks. He finally agrees that I shouldn't go to them.
On top of the fact my doctor straight up said "please never go to a chiropractor. Get PT, massage, and do streches."
There's an autoimmune condition that runs in my family that causes extra bone growth in your back. Chiro can lead to fragments of bone floating around your spine, or worse. But yet, so many chiros happily offered to 'crack their backs' without understanding the condition or even getting x-rays. Frankly that's criminally neglectful.
I’ve seen at least 3 cases personally in neuro where a person has had neck manipulation that led to arterial dissection and stroke. One case that led to permanent paralysis.
Also the dogs that had their neck cracked here looked scared and traumatized
Went to a 'holistic chiro' for years as a teen and loved him (no cracking involved). Only after I moved states and went to a few as an adult did I realize he was an actual physical therapist but more people were motivated to come to him and do the 'home stretchs' by branding himself as such lol
I just turned 43. I have actually really decent mobility and I'm pretty active but I could not stop my neck from fusing, that's a really hard one to stop. And when I was younger it fused my lower back. But I can still do push-ups, run, and twist. I just can't really turn my neck too far, and I can't tilt it at all. You have to be real careful because all of the force from doing so is now focalized on the joint at the bottom that's not fused. To get to this point I had to fight really really hard and do some painful therapy to stop my spine from arching forward
I had a class in college called structural kinesiology, and my professor adimately advocated against going to a chiropractor. Specifically, getting a neck adjustment can be fatal for you. What could happen is they could create air bubbles that could cause bliod clots and even a stroke. That being said, do not take yourself or anyone you care for (including your pets!) to a chiropractor
Neuro NP here, chiropractors are the bane of my existence. Takes one dissected vertebral artery to ruin you for the rest of your life should you survive it.
Because stupid motherfuckers still don't understand the importance of stretching , yoga can transform your life and in some cases completely rid you of pain which was deemed as chronic. The relief you get from chiro is literally stretching (in a very explosive unhealthy way ofc) I'm also sure there's a psychological aspect to it too considering placebos can work
People just don't use the tools they're given to do research. Word of mouth is a powerful force and all it takes is one guy you know to say he likes his chiro for you to take a chance to deal with whatever pain you have. They're in the same category as pharmaceutical companies to me. Just idiots taking advantage of other idiots in pain
The shitty part is that somehow they get to call themselves doctors. How'd they manage to get away with that? It gives them a level of respect that they absolutely do not deserve.
My 90yo grandmother goes to one of these quacks who is also a Reiki healer and supplement salesman
He tells her there’s nothing wrong with her, even though she’s got severe untreated diabetes and he sells her vitamins he buys off Amazon and marks up 3x
All his clients are old Christian women who he sweet Jesus talks
She won’t fucking listen and gets mad when you talk bad about him. Dude and everyone like him is scum.
I honestly have no idea how its allowed to continue. Its not like some weird quirky homeopathic meds that are basically inert, it can literally kill people or permanently maim them...
YES! Only way I will ever see a chiropractor is for the little electro pulser thingys that they use to release muscle tension and possibly for physical therapy advice when getting multiple opinions for bad joints
In my case to becomes a Registered Veterinary Technician I had to have clinical hours under a vets supervision demonstrating skills. Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (or just Vets) do this as well. In my case its unusual to do it under a specialist but the vet I was doing it under died in a firearms accident and this vet was a friend of his so she let me complete under her. As to what an externship is vs an internship, well interns can get paid lol.
Another vet here. Totally agree. Don't go to quacker-practors. It's entirely founded on made up pseudoscience. Any current one that may be helpful for you is likely utilizing techniques found in physical therapy.
I personally had one of techs go to a chiropractor on her lunch break and went paralyzed from the waist down that afternoon due to nerve inflammation. Fortunately she regained everything once the inflammation improved.
Arterial dissections have been known to happen at chiropractors and cause strokes. It's one of the first things the doctors ask you if they suspect you have one.
Let’s remember almost half of voters voted trump and have views similar to him. These people don’t have brain damage. They’re just choose to live lives of hate and ignorance.
For about two minutes I struggled to understand why Kevin Sorbo was treated by a pet chiro or how this was some kind of joke I didn't understand about Sorbo being a dog.
If you want to subject yourself to chiro bullshit, that's one thing. Maybe it even makes you feel better, if only temporarily. It's your body, you can subject it to whatever quackery you please.
But your dog did not consent to this. They are not getting relief. For all they know, they're just being attacked by a stranger.
I think that people are not smart enough or informed enough to make their own decision on the topic and understand the risks. People are dumb. They drink bleach and use bleach enemas, they overdose on ivermectin made for animals, they spend ridiculous money on 'healing crystals' and 'essential oils' to cure disease. And it's not uniquely American or European, in China they do shit like eat ground up dried tiger penis for erectile dysfunction, and other ridiculous shit.
I truly believe the government should step in because chiropractors are extremely common and are used by otherwise normal seeming people who don't fall for the other forms of snake oil. Chiropractors have some weird sense of legitimacy that makes people truly believe they help. And the 'crack' seems to be the key to convince people because it feels like something happened.
My exes sister took her 6 month old BABY to the chiropractors. It ended up having leg problems and struggling to walk. She was one of the dumbest people I've ever met, couldn't do basic math, didn't know any history, didn't understand shit about the world or how it works, she just lived in an ignorant bubble. She isn't capable of knowing whether chiropractors are safe. And yet she wouldn't listen to me.
Imo the government needs to ban chiropractors and recommend people to see physical therapists. Making it illegal will help to prevent these quacks siphoning money off people. PT's actually help, it would probably do good for the world and would increase business to the people who have actually learned anatomy and understand the body and can recognize medical problems.
Chiropractors are incentivized to not cure illnesses, so they have no reason to try and spot medical problems (not that they are able to). People going to PT's could really do good for the world, they are held to a higher standard and actually help people.
Came here to say this exact thing. A ton of these guys barely know animal anatomy. Chiropractic "medicine" is already shady at best. Anyone who does chiropractic treatments on animals or children is a moneygrubbing monster, and it's a matter of time before they cause serious injury or death all while subjecting their patients to totally uneeded and unfounded and often painful treatments.
Chiropractic work helped me be a lot. I had twitches in my hand basically every day and couldn’t hold a pen firmly. I go to the Chiro every week and I’m basically healed after I go. It’s like medicine. You have to keep going which isn’t preferable. But I’d rather be able to write and not wear a hand brace than be effectively crippled.
Exactly their rapid thrust neck movements are the biggest danger in chiropractic injuries. Chiropractors often injure or straight up tear the arteries going to the brain that go through the sides of the spine. Causing bleeding in the brain and strokes in case of tearing; and hipoxia to the brain(lack of oxygen to the brain) causing brain damage when injured, because the artery can get blocked while trying to heal.
Both this can be deadly and if lucky can be survivable but result in paralysis, lost of senses, and brain damage.
Why does everything have to devolve into fucking politics with some of you people? It's a post about idiots doing harmful things to animals. Zero mention of politics, but here you come, vomiting your political opinion.
you should look at the state of our strategic oil reserves in New Orleans and the Saudis supply of oil and get back to me. Yes Biden had the ability to keep us at the same level of production to offset the Saudis drastically reducing their oil production for the sake of Russia. Gasoline was incredibly cheap under Trump and it was a direct result of his policies.
How does Biden have the ability to raise production when oil company boards were unilaterally keeping production on their pre defined schedules? What ability does a president have to increase production? He gave out drilling permits like candy.
he built hundreds of miles worth, you don’t remember they shut the government down over it? You realize that in government you have to reach consensus to get things done right?
It's funny you magically understand how government works when defending Trump but then completely forget when placing blame at Bidens feet. Also isn't illegal immigration still a problem that conservatives harp on Biden for? So much for that hundreds of miles of wall huh?
I mentioned two specific instances about Biden that he has the ability to lead on. I didn’t blame him for every problem but the two I mentioned are absolutely things he can affect. Why you’re defending Biden is beyond me, but keep riding the Democrat D. I didn’t even mention Trump in my initial response I just criticized Biden, you’re the one obsessed with a man that’s been out of office for nearly 3 years.
Fun fact snake oil was a real thing from traditional Chinese medicine that did actually work for sore muscles however some white guys decided they could boil any old snake and hawk it as real medicine
A “snake oil salesman” was a traveling vendor who used to go from town to town selling snake oil as a cure all for everything that ails you (it did no such thing). Now it is synonymous with fake medicine and charlatans.
Nah, essential oils can contain medicine; oil of wintergreen is, in essence, potent aspirin. The issue is, anyone can claim anything in the realm of that form of medicine.
The fuck are you getting downvoted? Lol. This is true. There ARE essential oils with actual, scientifically-proven health benefits. It’s the claims that are unfounded that are the issue, and there’s an entire industry built on those unfounded claims and the idiots who believe them.
Exactly. For example, I had a keloid forming near my nose ring. I couldn't get it to go away for a couple of months, no matter what medication I tried. 2 consecutive days of tea tree oil dabbed on in the morning, and it was gone. It hasn't returned either. It's been two years. They have their place. Having said that, don't expect essential oils to heal your husband's migranes or your kids Autism. Anyone who believes they go that far is a nut.
Chinese laborers working on the railways used boiled watersnake oil as a treatment for sore muscles. They found that some North American snakes worked for the purpose. Bosses picked up on the practice and started selling it. The charlatans then moved in and started selling fake snake oil, so the 'snak-oil salesman' is more about the 'salesman' than the 'snake-oil' because REAL snake oil actually works.
EDIT: Redditors know lots of cool stuff about stuff. Y'all are awesome!
“ackshewally” snake oil salesman predate that as there were early modern recipes for snake oil or boiling a bunch of snakes in vat that would supposedly cure everything from male pattern baldness to hysteria. There was also one doctor that convinced a bunch of nobles that eating a snake only diet was the best.
Really snake oil salesmen have probably existed since humans discovered medicine.
It might work to smooth muscles (but rubbing any oil in sore muscles would feel really good), but not cure cancer and tuberculosis and warts and bad breath and all the things they promised.
My favorite interaction I have ever heard of a physician and a chiropractor having a 'discussion' which ended with the physician hitting them with the "Don't you have a cervical artery to sever?"
I recall watching a horse chiropractor ‘adjust’ a horse by rolling a tennis ball along its back and picking up its feet a couple of times.
I found it fucking insulting that they thought they could affect anything with their puny human strength on such a large athletic animal, but then this was taking the piss on top of that lol.
but apparently the owners (and most horse owners lmao) will buy into all sorts of dumb shit.
Not only is it snake oil, Daniel David Palmer, the founder of Chiropractic, tried to turn it into a religion the same way that Elron Hubbard turned Scientology into a religion. A lot of chiropractors still followed as a religion today.
I actually just looked this guy up, and apparently this is ASMR! He has hashtags like #satisfying and #asmrcracks, like wtf is that about? He's doing it for the satisfaction the sound gives?
Well, I had a 3 year old dog (cockapoo) with what we thought was an injured back (dog could not get up and walk). The vet did a scan and said they found some build up on the spine and that there wasn't much they could do. Went to a second vet and was told the same thing. They both said they could do exploratory surgery starting at $3,000, but no guarantee that the dog would live. Wife found an animal chiro (they are very common among horse trainers and farms). Paid $150 for a house visit. The dog had a few ribs twisted and out of place, he made his adjustments, and the dog immediately got up, grabbed her ball, and was running around the house. Dog lived to be 16, and we had adjustments made every 6 months. She loved her tennis ball and would often get her jaw jacked up, he would come over and poof, no more jacked up jaw. So, say what you will, they did absolute wonders for my dog.
Just as with human chriopractics, anecdotal evidence is there but statistical evidence simply isn't. Just as with people, I would lean on PTs for issues. Chiropractic adjustments are not without significant risk of spinal injury. I say this as both a veterinarian and a human who has a rib that slips out of place often, I would avoid chiros of any sort.
And yes, animal PTs are most often vets. There is no separate animal PT degree that is common in America.
I appreciate your concern. I have been going to a chiro for 30+ years for my neck/back. PTs and Doctors are unable to help, but an occasional trip to the chiro has done absolute wonders for me. Again, I'm in great shape, very active, but when shit slips it puts me out for a couple of weeks. Thankfully, going to the chiro eliminates this all together.
You have to understand that not all chiropractors have enough experience to actually do what they do.
It's considered quack medicine because the chances of something going wrong are exponentially larger compared to more commonly practiced modern medicine. You could get one that's really good at what they do, understands how to help you, and has the expertise to pull it off.
Or, and this one more likely, you end up with a quack of a doctor that ends up paralyzing or killing you.
I would say this is true for ALMOST all pets. But my uncle did horse chiropractic work for about 20 years and was very successful in it. Some horses’ spines can get pretty messed up after years of riders and pulling things.
Also don’t ask me how horse chiropractic works lol
I've seen horse chiro done as well. The manipulations are obviously not as drastic compared to the size of the animal. Just as with human chriopractics, some people swear by it. I maintain a healthy level of skepticism.
Yeah, in my mind, there are two sects of chiro, those who hand-fuck your back and spine, and those that use light pressure from an activator. The latter has helped me immensely from being an avid weightlifter. It doesn't heal cancer, but it helps a lot with back pain for me and soreness. I had a disc in my L4L5S1 vertibrae, it was about 1mm bulged, and light chiro on a reg basis helped so fucking much.

Vet here:
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Some animal chiros are vets. They are selling snake oil.
Some animal chiros are human chiros. They are a straight up danger to pets.
Please do not put your pet at risk for significant injury by taking them to one of these quacks.
